Rehabs by setting in Tennessee

Where each part of the area sits, and what is on its doorstep.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions about Tennessee

Answered from what is listed here.

Are there rehabs near open country in Tennessee?

Gee Creek Wilderness, in the Cherokee National Forest in east Tennessee, is a named wilderness area in the state, and each listed facility's profile records its distance from the closest named wilderness area.

Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville account for most of what is listed, from detox and residential rehab to partial hospitalization and sober living. East Tennessee's open country is a residential decision for most people.

Residential Rehab Near Wilderness Areashttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/wilderness/wilderness-residential/
Are sober living homes available in Tennessee?

Sober living homes are listed in Tennessee, including around Nashville, Knoxville and Memphis, and they sit after residential treatment or alongside intensive outpatient attendance rather than replacing either.

Partial hospitalization, standard outpatient and telehealth are listed in the state as well, and licensing for the clinical levels is held through the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Sober Living Homeshttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/sober-living-homes/
Is there addiction treatment for veterans in Tennessee?

Tennessee lists veterans and military programs, with TRICARE accepted at facilities in Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville and co-occurring mental health treatment recorded on those same listings.

Detox, residential care and sober living are all listed for former service members, and TennCare, Medicare, sliding scale fees and state-funded listings sit alongside TRICARE as payment routes in the state.

Drug and Alcohol Rehabs in Tennessee

Tennessee runs 440 miles west to east, from the Mississippi River at Memphis to the Appalachian ridges on the North Carolina line, and the state has organized itself around three Grand Divisions since its 1796 constitution.

West Tennessee is delta and cotton country, Middle Tennessee the limestone basin around Nashville, and East Tennessee the valley and ridge country beneath the Smokies.

The three stars on the state flag stand for those divisions, and the distinction is not decorative. Treatment availability, county overdose rates and even which health department you deal with all vary across them.

Interstates 40, 65, 24 and 75 cross the state and meet in its two largest cities. Nashville and Memphis sit at either end of I-40, three hours apart, with Knoxville and Chattanooga anchoring the east. Six metropolitan counties — Davidson, Shelby, Knox, Hamilton, Madison and Sullivan — run their own health departments, while 89 mostly rural counties are served by seven regional offices of the state health department.

Tennessee recorded 3,825 drug overdose deaths in 2022, an age-adjusted rate of 56.0 per 100,000 residents.

Deaths fell 5.5 percent in 2023, and by 2024 the state rate still ran roughly 52 percent above the national figure. Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids were involved in about 67 percent of Tennessee overdose deaths that year.

County rates vary more than any single state figure suggests: in 2024 they ranged from 7.4 per 100,000 in Williamson County to 76.0 in Union County.

State surveillance also finds that around 73 percent of fatal overdoses in Tennessee begin at a residential location rather than in public, which is the single strongest argument for keeping naloxone at home.

Which Level of Care Do You Need

This directory lists 391 treatment facilities across 121 Tennessee cities. The distribution is uneven in ways worth understanding before you start calling.

Medically Supervised Detox

Detox manages withdrawal under clinical observation, usually across several days, and is where treatment begins for anyone physically dependent on alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines. Only 43 of the 391 Tennessee facilities listed offer detox — around one in nine. It is the scarcest level in the state and the one most likely to require travel.

Inpatient Residential Treatment

Residential care provides a structured live-in setting for weeks or months. About 56 Tennessee facilities offer it, concentrated in Nashville and Memphis, which between them hold nineteen. A further 33 facilities offer hospital inpatient care.

Outpatient, IOP and PHP Treatment

Outpatient care lets you live at home while attending sessions. This is what Tennessee does: 366 of the 391 facilities offer outpatient services and 151 offer IOP. Partial hospitalization is far thinner at 37 providers statewide. Most people here will find outpatient and IOP locally and travel for anything more intensive.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Dual diagnosis care treats a substance use disorder and a mental health condition together rather than in sequence. Around 258 Tennessee facilities indicate they provide it. Medication-assisted treatment is also widely available, offered by 219 facilities — more than half the state total, and a reflection of how established the buprenorphine and methadone networks have become here.

Sober Living Homes and Transitional Living

Sober living homes provide drug-free housing after formal treatment ends. This directory does not currently list dedicated recovery residences as a separate category. The Tennessee Alliance for Recovery Residences maintains a register of certified homes, and the REDLINE can point you toward options in your county.

Addiction Treatment Cost and Insurance Coverage

Tennessee is a lower-cost treatment market than most of the west, and TennCare coverage is broad.

How Much Does Addiction Rehab Cost in Tennessee

Residential rehab in Tennessee runs roughly $5,000 to $22,000 a month and medical detox $7,000 to $22,000. Outpatient care is the lowest at $1,200 to $4,500 monthly, with IOP between $2,500 and $9,000. Of the 391 facilities listed statewide, 303 accept TennCare, where most members pay little or nothing out of pocket.

TennCare covers withdrawal management and treatment at inpatient, residential and outpatient levels. If you are uninsured, an eligibility check costs nothing and the REDLINE can start you toward one.

Does Insurance Cover Rehab in Tennessee

Yes. Federal parity law requires most health plans to cover substance use treatment on terms comparable to medical care. Statewide, 303 facilities accept TennCare and BlueCare Tennessee, 245 accept Medicare and 245 accept TRICARE. A further 35 accept VA Community Care, and 344 accept Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Coverage is not approval. Prior authorization is standard for detox and residential admission, and network status usually decides your share of the cost. Ask for a written estimate before admission.

Free and State-Funded Addiction Rehab in Tennessee

Tennessee has one of the more developed publicly funded systems in the south-east.

TennCare is the main route, accepted by more than three-quarters of listed facilities. The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services also funds treatment for uninsured and underinsured residents through more than a hundred contracted provider agencies.

The Regional Overdose Prevention Specialists distributed more than a million units of naloxone between October 2017 and July 2025, trained over 600,000 people in its use, and documented at least 114,000 lives saved.

Tennessee Recovery Navigators, certified peer specialists, meet people in emergency departments to connect them with care. The REDLINE on 800-889-9789 takes calls and texts around the clock and aims to give three referrals matched to what you actually need.

More Help and Recovery Support

Tennessee has major hospital systems in each Grand Division: Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the HCA TriStar network in Nashville, Regional One Health and Baptist Memorial in Memphis, the University of Tennessee Medical Center and Covenant Health in Knoxville, Erlanger in Chattanooga, and Ballad Health across the north-east. Rural counties depend heavily on critical access hospitals, and several have closed over the past decade, which is worth factoring into any plan that involves travel.

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous both have long-established area structures across all three divisions. Celebrate Recovery is unusually widespread in Tennessee, meeting in churches in counties where nothing else exists. SMART Recovery and Al-Anon Family Groups meet in the larger cities. Telehealth is the quiet advantage here: 345 of the 391 listed facilities offer it, the highest proportion of any state in this directory, which changes what is possible for people in rural counties.
