Treatment Centers in Texas That Accept Aetna

Aetna pays for drug and alcohol rehab in Texas through two separate routes: employer and Medicare plans under the Aetna name, and Aetna Better Health of Texas, a STAR, STAR Kids and CHIP plan for Medicaid members around San Antonio and Fort Worth. The route on the card decides the precertification steps and the network rules.

The programs listed here are drawn from Texas state licensing records and government treatment registers, and each shows its levels of care, from medical detox to outpatient counseling. Fort Worth, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and Austin all have listings. Sort them by city, level of care or substance, then call the program’s own number to ask about Aetna.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Texas?

Yes. Aetna covers substance use disorder treatment in Texas on its employer, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans, and names substance use as one of the conditions handled by its mental health benefits. What a card pays for depends on the plan behind it, and rehabs across Texas that take Aetna health plans are listed below.

Aetna Better Health of Texas is the Medicaid side, contracted by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for STAR and CHIP in the Bexar and Tarrant service areas and for STAR Kids in Dallas and Tarrant. Behavioral health sits inside the plan, reached around the clock through the member line by pressing 1, within the wider Medicaid program.

Which Aetna plan is behind a Texas member card?

The front of the card tells you: an Aetna Better Health of Texas card means Medicaid or CHIP, and a plain Aetna card means an employer, Medicare Advantage or older marketplace plan. Aetna stopped selling Texas marketplace plans when it left the exchanges in all 17 of its states in January 2026, so a 2025 marketplace card no longer pays.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Texas?

Yes, when the plan includes it and the stay is precertified. Aetna’s precertification list, current version effective August 1, 2024, counts a stay in a hospital addiction unit, a residential treatment program or any substance use disorder facility as an inpatient confinement that needs precertification. STAR members follow the Texas Medicaid benefit instead.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab in Texas?

Aetna Better Health STAR members get up to 35 days per episode under the Texas Medicaid rule, with no more than two episodes in six months or four in twelve unless the plan authorizes more. On Aetna commercial plans, length is settled through precertification, with each stay measured against the ASAM Criteria, Third Edition, and Aetna’s Clinical Policy Bulletins.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab in Texas?

Yes. Every inpatient or residential substance use stay on an Aetna commercial or Medicare Advantage plan needs precertification. An in-network provider asks for it, but at an out-of-network facility the member has to arrange it. Traditional Choice indemnity plans and federal employee plans sit outside the list, and residential rehab taking insurance is listed below.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Texas?

Yes. A 2026 Aetna Choice POS II employer plan document covers outpatient detox with medication, which a 2020 version of Aetna’s list exempted from precertification; detox in a hospital or facility counts as an inpatient stay and needs it. STAR members get Texas Medicaid withdrawal management, up to 21 days per episode, at medical detox centers taking insurance.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Texas?

Yes. A 2026 Aetna Choice POS II employer plan document, an example of Aetna’s national design, covers outpatient visits, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization with insurance and peer counseling, and of those only partial hospitalization is on the precertification list. In Texas, Aetna members can also see a mental health clinician in person at MinuteClinic, which Aetna lists for Texas.

Aetna Better Health STAR members in Bexar and Tarrant receive outpatient counseling under the Texas Medicaid yearly limits: 135 group sessions and 26 hours of one-to-one counseling in a calendar year, with more available when medical necessity is documented. Going past those limits needs prior authorization, and the request must be completed and signed by a qualified credentialed counselor.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Aetna plans cover medications for addiction treatment, with pharmacy benefits managed by sister company CVS Caremark. An Aetna Better Health of Texas notice said that from November 1, 2019 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants could bill Medicaid for non-methadone medications given in the office, as could outpatient chemical dependency facilities like MAT clinics accepting insurance.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone in Texas?

Yes. In a 2017 announcement, Aetna said its commercial plans would stop requiring advance approval for Suboxone and similar buprenorphine drugs, and each plan’s drug list sets the tier. Aetna Better Health members follow Texas Medicaid criteria, with 180-day authorizations, for Suboxone covered by insurance.

Does Aetna cover methadone in Texas?

Yes, through a licensed opioid treatment program. The Health and Human Services Commission licenses Texas narcotic treatment programs, and methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed only there, whichever Aetna plan pays. At Medicare-enrolled opioid treatment programs, Medicare pays for methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone plus counseling and testing, and Aetna Medicare Advantage members check their plan’s cost sharing.

Aetna Rehab Centers Along Hill Country Rivers, on North Texas Lakes and by the Gulf Coast

Aetna’s Medicaid map decides where a scenic setting is in network. Aetna Better Health STAR covers the eight counties of the Bexar service area and the six of the Tarrant service area, which take in Hill Country rivers and the lakes north and west of Fort Worth. On the Gulf Coast, Aetna coverage means an employer or Medicare plan.

Aetna rehab near Hill Country rivers

Hill Country river towns fall inside Aetna’s Bexar service area: Comal, Kendall and Bandera counties, where New Braunfels sits where the Comal meets the Guadalupe and Bandera lies on the Medina River. San Marcos does not, because Hays County belongs to the Travis area, where Aetna has no STAR plan. See rehabs near Texas rivers and programs in New Braunfels.

Aetna rehab on lakes north and west of Fort Worth

Aetna Better Health’s Tarrant service area reaches past Fort Worth into Parker, Hood, Johnson, Wise and Denton counties, so STAR and CHIP members have Aetna’s network in the counties around Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Granbury, Lake Bridgeport and Lewisville Lake. STAR members there call (800) 306-8612. Listings include lakeside rehab centers and Weatherford rehab programs.

Aetna rehab near Gulf Coast beaches

Aetna Better Health has no Medicaid plan in any Gulf Coast service area, so Medicaid members in Galveston or Corpus Christi choose another STAR plan. Aetna employer members can use coastal programs: PPO and POS plans pay out of network at a higher share, HMO and EPO plans only in network. See beachside rehab centers and Galveston rehab options.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Texas?

Browse the listings on this page. All of the programs shown take Aetna plans, and the filters narrow results to a city or to detox, residential or outpatient care. Aetna Better Health members should start with listings in the Bexar and Tarrant service areas and ask the program whether it takes their Medicaid plan.

Admission with Aetna starts with precertification for any inpatient, residential or partial hospitalization stay, which the facility requests before the first night. Aetna Better Health STAR members call (800) 248-7767 in Bexar or (800) 306-8612 in Tarrant and press 1 for behavioral health at any hour; employer and Medicare members call the number on their ID card.

Aetna rehab in San Antonio and Bexar County

San Antonio is one of two Texas cities where Aetna Better Health sells STAR and CHIP, competing in Bexar with Community First, Superior and Wellpoint. STAR members call (800) 248-7767 and CHIP families (866) 818-0959. Aetna offers no STAR+PLUS plan, so Bexar adults with disabilities choose Community First, Molina or UnitedHealthcare for San Antonio rehab programs.

Aetna rehab in Fort Worth and Tarrant County

Tarrant County is the only Texas service area where Aetna Better Health runs every program it has here: STAR, STAR Kids, CHIP and CHIP Perinatal. STAR members call (800) 306-8612 and CHIP families (800) 245-5380, and Cook Children’s and Wellpoint are the other STAR choices for Fort Worth treatment centers and rehabs in Arlington.

Aetna rehab in Dallas

Dallas County is STAR Kids territory for Aetna Better Health: young people 20 and under with disabilities can choose Aetna, at (844) 787-5437, or Wellpoint. Ordinary STAR members in Dallas cannot pick Aetna, because the county’s STAR plans are Molina, Parkland and Wellpoint, so outside STAR Kids, Aetna coverage at Dallas addiction treatment centers comes through employer plans.

Aetna rehab in Houston

Houston has no Aetna Medicaid plan, since the Harris service area’s STAR plans are Community Health Choice, Molina, Texas Children’s, UnitedHealthcare and Wellpoint. Aetna members in Houston are on employer or Medicare plans, and anyone who bought an Aetna CVS Health marketplace plan there needed new coverage from January 2026. Houston rehab facilities taking Aetna are listed here.

Aetna rehab in Austin

Austin’s Travis service area has no Aetna Better Health plan; STAR there is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Dell Children’s or Superior. Aetna coverage in Austin comes through employer and Medicare plans; since most Aetna commercial members nationally are in self-funded plans, the employer often sets which levels of care Austin treatment programs can bill.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, on Aetna employer plans with a national network, and on PPO and POS plans even out of network, at a higher cost. HMO and EPO plans pay outside the network only in an emergency. With an out-of-network provider, Aetna’s rules put the member, not the provider, in charge of arranging precertification.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna?

That depends on the plan. Aetna Better Health of Texas has not published a behavioral health copay for STAR, and CHIP families pay a yearly enrollment fee and small copays based on income. On employer plans the deductible and coinsurance vary, and an out-of-network provider may balance bill above Aetna’s recognized amount, which never counts toward the out-of-pocket maximum.

Aetna’s Texas Medicaid footprint could still change: Aetna was a 2024 intended STAR and CHIP awardee until a court froze the awards, and the January 2026 state map still shows Aetna’s STAR and CHIP in Bexar and Tarrant and its STAR Kids in Dallas and Tarrant. Self-pay rehab programs are listed as well.
