Free Rehab Centers in Texas

Free addiction treatment in Texas usually comes through public funding, and who pays, and how much, varies from one program to the next. Some programs charge nothing. Some use state money but still ask for a sliding fee. Others cost nothing only because Texas Medicaid covers the bill.

Listings on RehabSeekers.com draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details that providers report about themselves. Ask each program directly about its cost terms before you go. The sections below cover the state entry points, eligibility basics and the questions worth asking first.

Common questions about Free Rehab

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are free rehabs in Texas?

Free rehab listings in Texas cluster in Fort Bliss, Hilshire Village, Southside Place, Brownwood and Lubbock. Calling programs in more than one town can widen the search. Houston, Ciudad Juarez and Austin are larger cities nearby, and anyone able to travel a little farther may find an opening there.

Rehab Centers in Lubbockhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/texas/lubbock/
Which free rehabs in Texas are near mountains?

Some of the free rehabs in Texas sit within 25 miles of a mountain. Measured from each listed facility, the nearest named mountain lies a median of about 9.4 miles away, so the distance depends on which program a person is considering.

The Franklin Mountains, North Franklin Mountain and Mount Bonnell are the most-named mountain features near free rehab programs in Texas. Distances run from each facility to its nearest named feature.

Rehab Centers Near Mountainshttps://rehabseekers.com/attractions/mountains/
Who qualifies for free rehab in Texas?

Free rehab in Texas is often paid for through state-funded services run by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, covering screening, detox, residential, outpatient and medication-assisted treatment. A regional Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral provider can assess eligibility. Sliding scale and low-cost rehab are other routes when no-cost care is unavailable.

Low Cost Rehab Centers in Texashttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/texas/low-cost-rehab-tx/

Can I get addiction treatment for free in Texas?

Yes, some people can get addiction treatment for free in Texas, but free care is not open to everyone and space can be limited. The state has three main routes to low or no out-of-pocket cost, and each works differently.

No-cost programs charge nothing to people who meet their own criteria. State-funded care, aimed at uninsured or underinsured residents, is often free and sometimes carries a fee based on income. Texas Medicaid members usually pay little or nothing toward covered services.

Publicly funded programs generally look at three things at intake: whether you live in Texas, what your household earns and whether you have insurance. Bringing a photo ID, proof of address, recent wage slips or a benefits letter, plus any insurance card held, can speed things up, though a missing document does not always rule out an assessment.

Federal block grant rules move certain people up the line in funded programs. Pregnant women get admission preference, and people who inject drugs are also prioritized and offered interim services until a place opens. Residents of West Texas and the Panhandle may need to plan for longer drives to reach a program.

RouteWhat you may payWho it fits
No-cost programNothing, if you meet its rulesPeople who meet that program’s own criteria
State-funded careOften nothing, sometimes a fee based on incomeUninsured or underinsured Texans
Texas MedicaidLittle or no cost-share for covered servicesPeople enrolled in Texas Medicaid

Free listings in Texas lean toward cities: 56 percent are in urban areas, 37 percent in towns and 7 percent in rural settings. The nearest airport sits a median of 11.3 miles away, most often George Bush Intercontinental or William P. Hobby in Houston, or El Paso International. About one in three free listings is within 25 miles of a river. Three in ten are within 25 miles of a named peak, most often the Franklin Mountains near El Paso. People in West Texas and the Panhandle may face longer drives to reach a program.

Who qualifies for no-cost rehab in Texas?

Publicly funded treatment in Texas generally looks at Texas residency, household income and whether you have insurance. Income limits and residency rules are applied at intake, so ask the referral provider for the current figures. Helpful items to bring include a photo ID, proof of a Texas address, recent pay stubs or a benefits letter, and any insurance card you hold. Programs set their own document lists, and missing paperwork does not always stop an assessment.

Federal block grant rules give certain groups priority in programs that receive those funds. Pregnant women get preference in admission. If no space is open, interim services must be offered within 48 hours (45 CFR 96.131). People who inject drugs also have priority, with interim services while they wait (45 CFR 96.126). Programs focused on rehab for pregnant women in Texas are listed separately.

Other no-cost and low-cost routes

Eligible veterans can seek care through the VA, including the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in San Antonio and the Dallas VA Medical Center. Listings for veterans rehab in Texas show other options. Federally qualified health centers and community mental health centers often charge on a sliding scale, and low-cost programs fill some gaps. Peer recovery support and mutual-help groups meet across the state at no charge.

How do uninsured people in Texas start publicly funded treatment?

Uninsured Texans usually start by calling 2-1-1 Texas or 877-541-7905, or by contacting their regional Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral (OSAR) provider, whose lines answer 24 hours a day. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) funds these providers. OSAR staff assess needs and refer callers to state-funded detox, residential care, outpatient programs or medication treatment.

Funded beds can fill up, and some programs keep waitlists, so ask about expected wait times and interim support. More on how public money flows to providers is on the state-funded rehab in Texas page.

Does Texas Medicaid cover rehab with no out-of-pocket cost?

Texas Medicaid can cover substance use treatment with little or no out-of-pocket cost, but Texas has not expanded Medicaid. As a result, coverage for working-age adults is narrower than in expansion states. Most Texas Medicaid members get benefits through managed care plans such as Superior, United, Wellpoint, Molina and Community First, under programs including STAR and STAR+PLUS.

If you might qualify, applying first can widen your choices, because many programs that accept Medicaid are not limited to state-funded slots. Under rules in place since 2022, Texas Medicaid has paid for substance use counseling by video and, for existing patients, by phone. Programs that take Medicaid list it on their profiles.

What should I ask a free treatment program before going?

Start by asking whether the program holds a Chemical Dependency Treatment Facility license from the HHSC Regulatory Services Division, and whether it has outside accreditation. Not every free program is licensed or accredited, and some faith-based residential programs operate outside state licensing.

Other useful questions: Does the program offer medical withdrawal management or refer out for it? Does it allow medications for opioid use disorder, such as those prescribed through Suboxone clinics? Are there work requirements, and how long is a typical stay? Questions about specific medications are best taken to a prescriber.

Crisis and withdrawal safety

Anyone in crisis can call or text 988, and 911 is the line for emergencies. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be medically dangerous, so stopping either should happen under medical supervision.

Each listing notes the levels of care a provider reports as free. Cost terms can change, so call ahead. You can also browse free programs nationwide or return to all Texas listings.
