Drug and Alcohol Rehabs in Ashland, Richmond

Ashland is a town of around 8,000 in Hanover County north of Richmond, founded in 1848 as a mineral spring resort at the end of a railway line.

Randolph-Macon College has occupied the town center since 1868, and the CSX main line still runs down the middle of Center Street, which gives the town its nickname of the Center of the Universe.

The historic district holds substantial Victorian housing built for the resort trade.

Ashland holds ten listings.

The surrounding counties have recorded steep declines. Henrico fell from 124 overdose deaths in the twelve months to December 2021 to 65 four years later, and Chesterfield from 134 to 50, on provisional CDC counts.

Ashland is a small college town with a settled residential population, and the two groups reach services by quite different routes.

Randolph-Macon students frequently reach help only when an academic or legal consequence forces it, and the college health service is a faster first route for anyone enrolled.

For residents, a town of this size means the visibility of seeking help is a genuine consideration rather than a minor one.

The Hanover Community Services Board covers Ashland rather than Richmond’s, and establishing that saves a call.

Neighboring Mechanicsville, Henrico and Glen Allen carry their own listings, with the full metro picture on the Richmond page.

Which Level of Care Do You Need

The figures below describe what is listed in Ashland and the streets immediately around it. The whole metro shares one treatment market, so the Richmond page carries the full catchment. Randolph-Macon College has occupied the town center since 1868. Ashland was founded in 1848 as a mineral spring resort at the end of a railway line.

Medically Supervised Detox

Anyone whose body has adapted to the substance starts with detox, a short supervised period while withdrawal passes. Memorial Regional Medical Center serves Hanover County and VCU Medical Center is a drive south into the city. Alcohol withdrawal carries its highest risk in the first seventy-two hours, so this step needs arranging rather than attempted at home. The CSX main line still runs down the middle of Center Street, which gives the town its nickname. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids each follow different courses, and a program should say which it is set up to manage.

Inpatient Residential Treatment

Residential treatment puts someone in a program full time, usually for thirty to ninety days, with structure built into the whole week. Taking a semester out is a real decision, and colleges handle medical leave for this reason more routinely than students expect, so it is worth asking before assuming it would end a degree. Virginia’s Opioid Abatement Authority has directed substantial settlement funding to the Richmond region since 2023, so an older list may understate what is available. Asking what happens in the final week tells you more about a residential program than asking what happens in the first.

Outpatient, IOP and PHP Treatment

Virginia places people using American Society of Addiction Medicine criteria, so an assessment should produce a defined tier rather than whatever a program happens to offer. Everything above outpatient means traveling south toward Richmond, and transit is limited from Hanover County.

Dual Diagnosis and Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

Around half of people with a substance use disorder also have a diagnosable mental health condition, and treating one while ignoring the other rarely holds. Virginia’s Community Services Boards are the front door to publicly funded treatment, and Richmond Behavioral Health Authority covers the city while the surrounding counties operate their own. Anxiety alongside heavy drinking is common across both the student and resident populations here, for quite different reasons.

Sober Living Homes and Transitional Living

Sober living means shared substance-free housing for the months following treatment. The Virginia Association of Recovery Residences certifies homes as the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences, and certification is voluntary, so ask directly. In a town this small, returning to shared student housing where everyone drinks undoes much of what a program achieves.

Addiction Treatment Cost and Insurance Coverage in Ashland

Ashland prices above the Richmond metro median, and private treatment is within reach for most households here.

How Much Does Addiction Rehab Cost?

Medical detox across Richmond runs roughly $1,500 to $5,000 a week, residential treatment $6,200 to $26,000 a month, partial hospitalization $7,200 to $14,000 a month, intensive outpatient $2,700 to $9,200 a month and standard outpatient $1,300 to $5,200 a month.

Students on an out-of-state parental plan should confirm Virginia network status before admission, because out-of-network treatment is where the unexpected bills come from.

Standard rehab and detox, Richmond and the wider Virginia market
Level of careMonthlyDaily
Medical detox (7–14 days)$1,700 – $5,400 per week$240 – $770
Residential inpatient$6,800 – $28,000$225 – $930
PHP$7,800 – $15,000$260 – $500
IOP$2,900 – $9,800$95 – $325
Outpatient$1,400 – $5,600$45 – $185
Luxury and executive programs, Virginia
Level of careMonthlyDaily
Residential inpatient$19,000 – $55,000+$630 – $1,830
PHP$15,000 – $34,000$500 – $1,130
IOP$10,500 – $26,000$350 – $865
Outpatient$5,400 – $17,000$180 – $565

Does Insurance Cover Rehab?

Yes. Addiction treatment sits among the essential health benefits most plans are required to include. What a plan actually pays varies with the employer, the network and the level of care, so two people with the same insurer can face very different bills. Employer plans, student health cover, Medicare and Virginia Medicaid are all present here.

Coverage and approval are separate steps. Expect an authorization step ahead of detox or a residential bed, and check network status before anything else. Federal privacy rules on addiction treatment records are tighter than those covering ordinary medical notes, and separate again from any college disciplinary process.

Free and State-Funded Addiction Rehab in Ashland

Which one covers you depends on your address, so establish that before making calls.

Virginia expanded Medicaid in 2019 and the Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services benefit covers the full continuum including residential care, peer support and medication for opioid use disorder. It is among the more comprehensive Medicaid addiction benefits in the country.

Virginia’s opioid settlement funds are distributed through the Opioid Abatement Authority, which has directed substantial sums to the Richmond region since 2023. New capacity has come online as a result, so an older list may understate what is available.

More Help and Recovery Support

VCU Medical Center is the region’s Level I trauma center, with Bon Secours St. Mary’s, HCA Chippenham and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital also serving the metro.

Alcoholics Anonymous meets in Ashland and across Hanover County, including groups aimed at younger members. Narcotics Anonymous operates a Richmond area, and Celebrate Recovery meets in churches locally. Mechanicsville, Henrico and Glen Allen carry further listings, with more across Richmond and Virginia.
