Can trauma cause depression?

Yes. NIDA says stress and trauma may contribute to mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, and someone can develop depression after a traumatic event. A positive screen is not a diagnosis. The National Center for PTSD says anyone who screens positive needs further assessment, preferably a structured interview such as the CAPS-5, or a validated self-report such as the PCL-5 when an interview is not possible.
