Sober Living Homes and Recovery Housing

Housing shapes early recovery more than people expect. A sober living home provides substance-free accommodation with house rules, shared chores and usually a curfew, sitting between the structure of residential treatment and living independently again. Residents typically work, study or attend outpatient sessions during the day.

These homes are licensed unevenly across states, so quality ranges widely. Ask about NARR or state certification, weekly rent, whether medication for opioid use disorder is permitted, and what triggers discharge. We review published records where they exist. Compare a shortlist and visit if you can.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is a sober living home?

A sober living home is an alcohol- and drug-free shared house where residents in recovery live under house rules with peer support. SAMHSA describes recovery housing as safe, healthy, family-like substance-free living environments centered on peer support and connection to services. It is housing, not clinical treatment.

The setting itself is the service: there is no on-site therapy at peer-run or monitored homes, and residents arrange any counseling or medical care off site.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
How much do sober living homes cost?

Sober living usually costs $500 to $1,000 a month in peer-run or house-manager homes, according to a 2025 survey of state recovery-housing affiliates. More staffed homes with weekly programming or clinical services commonly average $1,500 or less, though a small share report averages above $3,000.

Operator guides put a shared room near $450 to $800 a month and a private room at $1,000 to $2,500, with coastal metros higher. Ask for the fee schedule in writing.

Low Cost Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/payment/low-cost/
Who pays for sober living homes?

Residents pay, in most cases. SAMHSA reports estimates that 70 to 90 percent of recovery house costs are covered by resident fees, and 65 percent of state recovery-housing affiliates name resident payments as the largest funding source in their state.

Weekly rent paid directly by the resident is the usual arrangement, so self pay is recorded at almost all of these houses, with state funded places noted at a clear majority.
