Therapy and Counseling Sitemap

Therapy is where the actual work of recovery happens, and the differences between approaches are real rather than cosmetic. CBT targets the thoughts that drive a behavior. EMDR processes traumatic memory. Contingency management uses tangible incentives, and it remains one of the few approaches with strong evidence for stimulant use, where no medication yet exists. Matching approach to problem is the point, which is why most good programs combine several rather than committing to one.

The categories below reflect how much evidence sits behind each approach. Evidence-based therapies have been tested in controlled trials and form the clinical backbone of most treatment. Holistic and wellness support covers practices that help people stay engaged and manage stress, valuable alongside clinical care rather than instead of it. Specialized therapies include newer clinical options such as ketamine-assisted therapy and TMS, generally used when first-line treatment has not worked. Any reputable program should be able to explain which it offers and why.

Talking work is the core of most treatment. Under this heading sit the counseling formats SAMHSA records for each facility: individual sessions, group work, family and couples counseling, trauma-focused therapy and anger management, delivered across detox, residential and outpatient settings. Format changes what treatment feels like. Group work suits people who gain from hearing others; individual sessions suit those who do not. Listings show which formats each provider records, so you can see the mix before calling and ask how often sessions actually run.

Evidence-based means the approach has been tested in clinical trials and published, rather than adopted because it sounds right. CBT, DBT, EMDR, motivational interviewing and contingency management all sit in that category, and SAMHSA asks facilities to report which of them they deliver. Reporting a therapy is not the same as building a program around it. Ask how often sessions run, who delivers them, and whether staff hold specific training or certification in that model. Each listing shows the approaches recorded, which gives you a place to start comparing.

Beyond talk therapy sit treatments that need particular equipment, licensing or medical staff. This heading gathers them: brain stimulation such as TMS and ECT, ketamine infusion, cognitive remediation for thinking and memory, structured activity therapy, and acupuncture used to ease withdrawal symptoms. Availability is much narrower than for counseling, and these services are often delivered under a psychiatric rather than an addiction license. Some are offered on site, others through referral to a partner clinic. Each listing shows what a facility records, so start there and ask.
