About Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José

Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José is a private psychiatric clinic in Telheiras, Lisbon, run by the Irmãs Hospitaleiras (Hospitaller Sisters). Founded in 1956, the clinic offers outpatient consultations, inpatient care, a day hospital, internal residential units and community rehabilitation for adults and older adults with psychiatric conditions, dementia, intellectual disability and eating disorders. No addiction service is listed.

The operator, the Instituto das Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, has run the unit from its current premises since May 1995. Psychiatry covers bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and panic, and psychoses, with inpatient care for psychogeriatrics, dementia and intellectual disability. A dedicated eating-disorders response, RIPA, combines a day hospital and an inpatient unit for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. Consultations and admissions each have their own email address, and the clinic answers on 217 125 110. Anyone seeking alcohol or drug treatment should note that the network’s addiction speciality sits at its Braga and Condeixa-a-Nova units instead.

How Much Does Treatment at Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José Cost?

Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José has no online prices. Its operator holds a cooperation agreement with the SNS, so a place through the public referral route is funded under that contract with a client contribution; privately funded admissions are self-pay, typically €6,000 to €16,500 a month for psychiatric inpatient care and €3,500 to €7,500 a month for a day programme.

Whether a given admission falls under the public agreement depends on how you or a loved one is referred, so ask the admissions team which route applies before accepting a date. Private health insurance is not mentioned on the unit’s page. Contact the clinic on 217 125 110 or at internamentos.cpsj@irmashospitaleiras.pt for a quote tailored to the programme and length of stay being considered.

Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José Reviews

Reviews of Clínica Psiquiátrica de S. José from around the web are limited, which is common for a hospital-style psychiatric unit run by a religious order rather than a marketed rehab. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for the clinic, and anyone who has attended as a patient, day-hospital participant or family member is welcome to share their experience here.

First-hand accounts are especially useful for a service like this one, where the same site houses outpatient consultations, an inpatient ward, a day hospital and residential rehabilitation units. Describing which programme you attended, how the eating-disorders or psychiatry team worked with you and what the admission process felt like would give you or someone you care about a clearer picture than a general star rating.

Terrible experience. I called to schedule an appointment, asked if they accepted my health insurance plan, and they said yes. I asked them to confirm if they accepted even the most basic plan, so I could give them my… insurance card number to confirm. They said I had to schedule an appointment first and go there, but how am I supposed to schedule an appointment (which can take more than a month) if I'm not even sure if they accept my health insurance plan????? I found it disrespectful and completely negligent towards the customer. The employee who answers calls was unwilling to help and totally unprepared.

The consultations are far too short to allow for a proper understanding of a patient, let alone a diagnosis. I had a terrible experience with a doctor who, in addition to not listening to me or taking what I shared… seriously, showed no empathy whatsoever, which in psychiatry should be imperative and can even be quite dangerous. I was given a diagnosis without care and medication without any support should anything happen. I believe there are qualified professionals, but due to my experience, I do not recommend this hospital at all, especially for someone who is mentally very fragile.

A very unsatisfactory consultation with Dr. Manuela Pinho. I brought the tests that had been requested at the previous consultation, but I felt that neither the symptoms nor the results of those tests were properly… considered. The doctor simply said that I should "get used to" my condition, without proposing any kind of follow-up or solution. When I expressed a desire to understand the situation better, I was told, in a rather unfriendly manner, that it was not her place to provide a diagnosis, repeatedly insisting that she would not prepare any report—something that had never been requested. I left with the feeling of not having been heard or supported as I expected, which is particularly regrettable in a clinic dedicated to mental health. Based on this experience, I do not recommend her.

It's surreal that they scheduled an appointment for 2 PM, and when I was already leaving home on my way to the location, they called to say it was a mistake, that the slot was already filled. Given the urgency and the… specialty involved, I don't think you do this to anyone. Seriously, it's sheer incompetence.

The appointments are very short (15 to 20 minutes), including the first appointment. There ends up not being much communication and the appointments seem rushed. However, the doctor is experienced. It is easy to… schedule the first appointment, with a waiting time of one to two months (and subsequent appointments can also have intervals of only one month).

I read some reviews and I'm shocked. I left the Telheiras clinic yesterday. I've never seen people treated like guinea pigs, and when you make a statement like that, it's important to explain why, otherwise the person… making it doesn't know what it means to be a guinea pig. If you do a little research on mental illness, you'll realize that medication for mental illness is difficult to get right; it's not like an aspirin that takes away everyone's headache. My daughter, who has a mental illness, took three years to get the right medication, and even then, it often has to be adjusted. Besides, what works for one person doesn't work for another. That's not being a guinea pig; it's the path all mentally ill people take. A mental illness, most of the time, has no cure; it can only be alleviated with medication. I was cared for and extremely well received by everyone, from the cleaning staff to the assistants and nurses. I have three cats, and nobody treated me worse than I treat my cats. It's so easy to write what we want instead of saying it face to face. I'm Catholic, and as such, having the opportunity to benefit from a chapel with Jesus, right there next to me, gave me the opportunity to introspect, which helped me a lot in my treatment. I came to believe even more in Jesus and in what we can do. Jesus isn't a miracle-working saint who solves everything; we also have to want it. What prevents me from giving 5 stars is really the food, which is very bad. I'm an educator, I work in a school where the food is also provided by a company, and it's equally bad. The clinic isn't private; it's a non-profit organization, so it uses its own funds to pay the company, which then uses that money to provide the food. They asked me to write everything down so that what's not working well would reach the appropriate people. That's what I did, showing photos of the food. Most people come to social media to criticize, and where they should speak up, they say nothing. If I went there, it was because my daughter had already been there, and even back then, during the COVID times, we were very satisfied. When you like something, you go back. The nuns always welcomed me with great affection, and I hope what I take away from the activities I attended will help me because I learned a lot during that month. It's not, and cannot be, a 5-star hotel. It does the best it can, but it's also up to us, as users, to contribute to improving the service, provided we are able to do so. Talking about others, especially on social media, is very easy...

At outpatient clinics, they want you to pay before the appointment, which is always late. It's so they don't run out of money.

Christmas Eve (and every other night) and the lights in the corridors leading to the patient units are all off, as well as the main entrance to the Clinic, with only the nightlights remaining on! Not a single light from… the nativity scenes is lit, nothing that has to do with CHRISTMAS being lit, or illuminated, in a Clinic that calls itself "Hospitable Sisters"! But where is the "hospitality", or even simple humanism??! The parking lot is also dark, good for those with lynx eyesight. Are they saving money??! There are patients paying hefty rents and all of them, the patients, deserve a minimum of respect for their safety and dignity! Miserable and undignified treatment on any day of the year and, even worse, on Christmas Eve in a Clinic that calls itself "Christian"... Miserable! Speechless, without possible justification, miserable behavior!

Excellent medical care and from the nursing team and nursing assistants, as well as the other staff at the Clinic. Less valuable, in my humble opinion, is the limited variety of food options as well as their… preparation. Well done!
