Does Kaiser Permanente cover rehab?

Yes, addiction treatment is a covered benefit. Kaiser states that the care its treatment team recommends will be covered under the member's health plan, spanning prevention, treatment and recovery support. Can I go to a rehab outside Kaiser?

Yes, but only when Kaiser authorizes it in advance. On HMO plans, care from a non-Plan provider is covered for referrals authorized in advance by the Medical Group, emergencies, post-stabilization care and out-of-area urgent care. The Medical Group must authorize services that are not available from Kaiser's own providers.

Yes, inpatient detoxification is a standard covered line in Kaiser plans. In sampled 2026 California employer plans the cost ranges from no charge, to $150 or $250 per admission, to 20 percent coinsurance, depending on the plan. In the Washington region the first three days of acute withdrawal management need no prior authorization.

Does Kaiser Permanente Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, and generally well, provided you understand how the system is built. Kaiser Permanente operates as an integrated health system across California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, Washington and the District of Columbia. The insurance arm and the care delivery arm are the same organization, which is unusual in American healthcare and changes what coverage means in practice.

Kaiser runs its own chemical dependency and addiction medicine programs, staffed by its own clinicians. When you use Kaiser for addiction treatment you are generally using a Kaiser program, not a facility Kaiser has contracted with. Those programs are typically strong on outpatient and intensive outpatient care and on medication for opioid use disorder, with residential care arranged through contracted providers when clinically indicated.

Almost everything begins with a Kaiser assessment. Contact the addiction medicine or chemical dependency department directly, which most regions allow without going through your primary care physician. An outside facility cannot arrange Kaiser coverage on your behalf the way it might with a PPO, because there is no out-of-network benefit for it to work with.
