Depression and PTSD Treatment

Depression frequently follows trauma, and the two conditions reinforce each other over time. Because SAMHSA records PTSD but carries no field for depression, what appears here is drawn from providers reporting PTSD services, where depressive symptoms are among the most common presentations staff encounter.

Sequencing is a genuine clinical question. Some programs stabilize mood before starting trauma work; others run both in parallel. Neither approach is universal, so ask how the team decides and who is involved. Compare listings on therapy offered, psychiatric access and program length.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Can you have depression and PTSD at the same time?

Yes. The National Center for PTSD says it is quite possible to have both conditions together, and depression is one of the most common problems to develop after trauma. A large national survey found depression is nearly 3 to 5 times more likely in individuals with PTSD than in those without it.

After the Oklahoma City bombing, a survey of survivors found 23% had depression following the event, compared with 13% beforehand.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditionshttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/co-occurring-mental-health/
What is PTSD?

PTSD is diagnosed when symptoms following a traumatic event last an extended period and begin to interfere with daily life, such as relationships or work. NIMH says someone with PTSD may keep feeling stressed or frightened even when no longer in danger, long after the event itself has passed.

Feeling anxious, sad or angry and having trouble sleeping are common right after trauma, and NIMH says most individuals recover from these reactions over time.

PTSD Treatmenthttps://rehabseekers.com/mental-health/mental-health-conditions/ptsd/
How common is PTSD?

In the general population, 6 out of every 100 adults, or 6%, will have PTSD at some point in their lifetime, according to the National Center for PTSD. Depression is more common still: in any given year, almost 1 in 10 adult Americans has some type of depression.

NIMH notes that most individuals who live through a dangerous event do not develop PTSD, though earlier adversity, especially in childhood, raises the chance.

Depression and PTSD describes a diagnosed major depressive episode occurring together with a diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder, usually addressed with trauma-focused psychotherapy and, where chosen, an SSRI or SNRI medication under VA and Department of Defense guidance. The two conditions are quite possible to have at the same time, and because their symptoms overlap, a plan built around the trauma-focused therapy can bring improvement in both.

This page is specifically about depression alongside a full PTSD diagnosis, tied to the formal trauma-focused therapies and FDA-labeled medications that the VA/DoD PTSD guideline names. That is a narrower combination than depression following a broader trauma or adverse-childhood history without a PTSD diagnosis, and a different one from depression alongside a diagnosed anxiety disorder such as generalized anxiety disorder, both covered on their own pages.

What follows covers who this combination affects, what a course of trauma-focused treatment involves, how long it runs, the credentials behind it, what federal guidance names, which levels of care offer it, what it costs, how it is paid for and how to find a program that treats PTSD and depression together.
