Treatment Centers in Michigan That Accept Michigan Medicaid

Michigan Medicaid pays for drug and alcohol rehab through ten regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans, not through the health plan named on the member’s card. Outpatient counseling, withdrawal management, residential treatment and medications for addiction treatment are all covered, for Healthy Michigan Plan adults and MIChild children as well as traditional Medicaid members.

Michigan programs shown below are drawn from state licensing records and government treatment registers, reaching from Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint up to Traverse City and Marquette. Each listing shows its levels of care and a direct phone number, and the list can be narrowed by town, service or substance.

Does Michigan Medicaid Cover Rehab in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan Medicaid covers substance use disorder treatment across the full ASAM continuum: outpatient and intensive outpatient care, withdrawal management, residential treatment, medication-assisted treatment, opioid treatment programs and peer recovery supports. The benefit applies at Michigan drug and alcohol rehabs contracted with a regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan, the body that pays for and authorizes this care.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services runs Michigan Medicaid, the state’s share of the federal Medicaid program. Nine Medicaid Health Plans handle physical health under a contract called the Michigan Comprehensive Health Care Program, while ten PIHPs handle substance use and specialty behavioral health. Every member except American Indian beneficiaries is enrolled in a PIHP automatically.

Which Michigan Medicaid plan pays for rehab?

The regional PIHP pays, not the Medicaid Health Plan printed on the card. McLaren Health Plan’s Healthy Michigan handbook lists assessment, detox, intensive outpatient counseling and methadone as Medicaid services provided outside the plan. PIHPs work through county Community Mental Health Services Programs, and a state bid to merge the ten regions into three was withdrawn on February 12, 2026.

Does Michigan Medicaid Cover Inpatient Rehab in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan’s Section 1115 Behavioral Health Demonstration, in place since April 5, 2019, lets Medicaid pay for residential rehabs taking Medicaid and residential withdrawal management even in facilities classed as institutions for mental disease. The state applied to extend it on April 11, 2024, and it runs on temporary extensions while that review continues.

How long will Michigan Medicaid pay for residential rehab?

Michigan Medicaid’s Behavioral Health Demonstration targets a statewide average residential stay of 30 days. The regional PIHP authorizes each stay, and placement follows the ASAM Criteria: the ASAM Continuum assessment for adults and the GAIN-I for young people, both built into each PIHP’s records system.

Does Michigan Medicaid need prior authorization for inpatient rehab?

Yes, from the PIHP for the member’s county. Region 10 PIHP, which covers Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair counties, lists residential treatment, sub-acute detox, intensive outpatient and methadone as services needing authorization, and warns that they may have waiting lists. Providers must use ASAM or comparable evidence-based placement criteria when they request a stay.

Does Michigan Medicaid Cover Detox in Michigan?

Yes. The state’s Treatment Policy #13, dated July 1, 2017, sets four PIHP levels of medical detox covered by Medicaid: ambulatory 1-WM and 2-WM, residential 3.2-WM and inpatient 3.7-WM. Hospital detox at level 4-WM goes through the physical health system instead, and residential detox needs a license from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Does Michigan Medicaid Cover Outpatient Rehab in Michigan?

Yes. Michigan Medicaid covers outpatient rehab programs and intensive outpatient programs accepting Medicaid through the PIHP. Region 10 PIHP, one of the ten regions, lists intensive outpatient among services needing its authorization, and its service booklet also names recovery housing, case management, women’s specialty services and early intervention alongside standard counseling.

Peer recovery support is a covered Michigan Medicaid service under the Behavioral Health Demonstration, and PIHPs offer it as peer recovery coaching. The Michigan Peer Warmline, 1-888-733-7753, is staffed by certified peer support specialists from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. every day, and aftercare and continuing care appears as a filter in the listings.

Does Michigan Medicaid Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. Since December 2, 2019, Michigan Medicaid has covered preferred medications for opioid use disorder without prior authorization: buprenorphine and buprenorphine/naloxone tablets, Suboxone films, Sublocade, Zubsolv, naltrexone tablets and Vivitrol. Every Medicaid Health Plan has used a common formulary since January 1, 2016, so MAT clinics that take Medicaid work from one drug list.

Does Michigan Medicaid cover methadone?

Yes, but only through the PIHP. Michigan Medicaid pays for methadone for opioid use disorder at opioid treatment programs the PIHP contracts with, not through the pharmacy benefit, and Region 10 PIHP lists methadone among services needing authorization. Methadone clinic treatment also requires an outpatient methadone license from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Does Michigan Medicaid cover Suboxone?

Yes. Suboxone films are preferred, so Suboxone rehab that takes Medicaid can prescribe them without prior authorization, and the common formulary carves buprenorphine products and Vivitrol out of the health plans to fee-for-service Medicaid. Bunavail and non-preferred films still needed authorization in 2019, while naltrexone treatment covered by Medicaid needs none.

Michigan Medicaid Rehab Centers on the Great Lakes, in the National Forests and in the Upper Peninsula

Michigan Medicaid benefits do not change between Muskegon’s beaches and downtown Detroit. What changes from the dunes to the northern forests and the Upper Peninsula is the PIHP that authorizes treatment and the number of Medicaid Health Plans: up to eight in the southern Lower Peninsula, and one north of the Mackinac Bridge.

Michigan Medicaid rehab along the Lake Michigan shore

Lake Michigan shore treatment under Michigan Medicaid largely falls to the Lakeshore Regional Entity, (231) 769-2050, which covers Allegan, Ottawa, Muskegon, Oceana and Mason counties along the water. Inland Kent and Lake counties belong to the same region. Grand Haven and Ludington sit in that region, and treatment centers in Muskegon appear among rehabs near the Great Lakes.

Michigan Medicaid rehab near the Huron-Manistee National Forests

The Huron-Manistee National Forests cross three Michigan Medicaid behavioral health regions. Manistee, Wexford, Crawford, Iosco and Oscoda counties use the Northern Michigan Regional Entity, (231) 487-9144. Lake County uses the Lakeshore Regional Entity, and Newaygo County uses Mid-State Health Network. Programs near national forests include rehab programs in Cadillac.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in the Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula has one Medicaid Health Plan, Upper Peninsula Health Plan, (800) 835-2556, and one PIHP, NorthCare Network, (888) 333-8030, for all fifteen counties from Ironwood to Sault Sainte Marie. Lake Superior, the Hiawatha and Ottawa national forests and the Porcupine Mountains lie in that region, home to Marquette treatment programs and rehabs near wilderness areas.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Michigan Medicaid Near Me?

Browse the listings on this page. Michigan Medicaid is accepted at every program shown, the list can be narrowed by town, type of care or substance, and every listing carries the program’s own phone number. Substance use programs in Michigan are licensed by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in categories from outpatient to residential.

Admission runs through the PIHP access line for the member’s county of residence, which screens the person, authorizes a level of care and refers to a contracted provider. Anyone not yet enrolled can apply through MI Bridges or the Michigan Health Care Helpline, 1-855-789-5610; current members reach the Beneficiary Help Line at 1-800-642-3195.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in Detroit and Wayne County

Wayne County is a Michigan Medicaid behavioral health region of its own, run by the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network at (800) 241-4949, and all eight Lower Peninsula health plans enroll there. From January 1, 2026 it handles dual-eligible members under MI Coordinated Health contracts at treatment centers in Detroit and Livonia rehab programs.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in Oakland County

Oakland County Medicaid members have substance use treatment authorized by Oakland Community Health Network, (800) 341-2003, and choose among the same eight health plans offered in Wayne and Macomb. Pontiac, Southfield, Troy and Farmington Hills share that single-county region, so Southfield drug and alcohol rehabs follow the same authorization as programs around Pontiac.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in Grand Rapids and Kent County

Kent County Medicaid members choose among six health plans: Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, Molina, Priority Health Choice and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Substance use treatment runs through the Lakeshore Regional Entity, the same region as the shoreline counties, so rehab programs in Grand Rapids and Holland treatment options follow one set of rules.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in Flint and Genesee County

Genesee County shares Region 10 PIHP with Lapeer, Sanilac and St. Clair counties, and the region’s access line, (888) 225-4447, is answered 24 hours a day. Six health plans serve Genesee, HAP CareSource among them since October 1, 2024, for Flint drug and alcohol rehabs and programs in Grand Blanc.

Michigan Medicaid rehab in Lansing and Ingham County

Ingham County sits in Mid-State Health Network, a twenty-one-county Michigan Medicaid region stretching from Hillsdale to Huron, with a substance use access line of (844) 405-3095. The state’s January 2025 service area listing shows three health plans in Ingham: Aetna Better Health, HAP CareSource and McLaren Health Plan, and treatment centers in Lansing follow Mid-State’s rules.

Can I use Michigan Medicaid for rehab in a different county?

Only through the member’s home PIHP. Michigan Medicaid substance use treatment is assessed, authorized and referred by the PIHP access line for the county where the member lives, to providers that PIHP contracts with. For health plan services, McLaren’s handbook says the plan arranges out-of-network care when a service is unavailable in network, paid as in network once agreed.

How much does rehab cost with Michigan Medicaid?

Little or nothing. The state lists no copay for mental health services through designated programs, and no PIHP copay for substance use treatment appears in state materials. Healthy Michigan Plan members pay copays at the doctor’s office or pharmacy as applicable, and since January 2024 the state no longer collects MI Health Account contributions or requires Healthy Behaviors activities.

Healthy Michigan Plan work requirements start on January 1, 2027, covering certain adults aged 19 to 64 and applying to existing members at renewals on or after March 1, 2027. People in a substance use disorder treatment program are exempt. Michigan residents who lose or lack coverage can filter for state-funded rehab programs or sliding scale fees here.
