Eating Disorder Treatment in Michigan

Eating disorder treatment in Michigan ranges from weekly outpatient therapy to around-the-clock residential and hospital care, and some programs also treat substance use at the same time. The listings below draw on government treatment registers, state licensing records, accreditor listings, and details providers send us. Each listing shows the levels of care, payment options and age groups that program reports.

Michigan treatment listings lean toward smaller places. About half sit in town settings, a quarter in rural areas and the rest in urban neighborhoods, with clusters in metro Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Flint. Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula have fewer options.

Common questions about Eating Disorder Treatment

Answered from what is listed here.

Where are eating disorder programs in Michigan?

Detroit comes first among Michigan places where eating disorder treatment listings cluster, followed by Flint, Highland Park, Gaylord and Midland. Grand Rapids and Sterling Heights are other large cities near listed programs, which gives families outside the Detroit area another starting point when comparing levels of care and travel time.

Eating Disorder Treatment in Detroithttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/michigan/detroit/eating-disorder-detroit/
Do eating disorder programs in Michigan take Michigan Medicaid?

Michigan Medicaid acceptance differs from one eating disorder provider to the next, and each listing records the payment options a provider reports. Behavioral health benefits flow through regional plans such as Oakland Community Health Network, Lakeshore Regional Entity and NorthCare Network, so members can check with their own plan which eating disorder services are covered.

Rehab Centers in Michigan That Accept Michigan Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/locations/us/michigan/michigan-medicaid/
Are there eating disorder programs near a river in Michigan?

Nearly all of the eating disorder programs in Michigan have a river within 25 miles, at a median of about 5.5 miles from listed facilities. The most-named rivers are the Upper River Rouge, the River Rouge and the Red Cedar River.

Measurements start from each listed facility. Families weighing location can ask a program about visiting hours, family sessions and transport, which shape daily life more than nearby water does.

What levels of eating disorder care are available in Michigan?

Michigan offers eating disorder care at five levels: outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential and inpatient hospital care, the same structure used across the country. Each listing on this page names the levels its program reports, and many people step up or down between them as their needs change.

Outpatient care means scheduled visits with a therapist, dietitian or physician while the person keeps living at home. Intensive outpatient adds several hours of group and individual work on a few days each week, frequently with supported meals. Partial hospitalization takes up the bulk of each weekday, at least five days a week, under medical monitoring, with evenings spent at home.

Residential programs house people on site with staff present around the clock, structured meals and therapy every day. Inpatient hospital care is reserved for medical stabilization, with nursing and physician oversight at all hours. A medical evaluation through a primary care doctor or emergency department helps show which level is safe to start at.

Michigan Medicaid, the Healthy Michigan Plan, Medicare, TRICARE and private insurance can all help pay for eating disorder care, though acceptance depends on both the program and the plan. Since April 2, 2025, state law has required Medicaid to cover behavioral telemedicine, including audio-only visits, which suits outpatient therapy but cannot replace in-person monitoring.

Level of careWhat it involves
OutpatientScheduled sessions with a therapist, dietitian or physician while living at home
Intensive outpatient (IOP)Several hours of group and individual therapy a few days a week, often with supported meals
Partial hospitalization (PHP)Most of the day, five or more days a week, with medical monitoring and nights at home
ResidentialLiving on site with 24-hour staff, structured meals and daily therapy
InpatientHospital care for medical stabilization with round-the-clock nursing and physician oversight

Michigan pages for outpatient care, IOP, PHP, residential programs and inpatient care list programs by each level. Across all Michigan treatment listings, 93 percent sit within 25 miles of a river, most often the Upper River Rouge in the Detroit area. The median distance to the nearest airport is 14.8 miles, and 81 percent are within 30 miles of one, which helps families traveling from the north.

When does someone with an eating disorder need a hospital or residential program?

Someone with an eating disorder needs a medical evaluation first, and hospital care when that evaluation shows the body is under serious strain. Eating disorders can cause medical emergencies, including heart rhythm problems, fluid and electrolyte shifts, and refeeding syndrome, a complication that can occur when eating restarts after long restriction. A primary care doctor or emergency department can run the vital sign checks and blood tests that point to a safe level of care.

Call 911 or go to an emergency department for fainting, chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, confusion, vomiting blood, or thoughts of suicide. For emotional crisis support, call or text 988 at any hour. Urgent care clinics are not set up to treat eating disorders.

Residential or PHP care often follows a hospital stay, or comes when outpatient care has not been enough or meals cannot happen safely at home. Telehealth suits outpatient therapy and family sessions but does not replace in-person care when medical monitoring is needed. Under a Michigan law in effect since April 2, 2025, Michigan Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan cover behavioral telemedicine, including audio-only visits, at no lower rate than an office visit.

Can eating disorders and substance use be treated at the same program?

Some programs treat an eating disorder and substance use together, and each listing shows whether a program reports doing so. Alcohol, stimulants and other substances can overlap with restricting, bingeing or purging, and treating only one can leave both harder to manage.

Intake staff can explain whether one team handles both conditions or whether the program refers out for withdrawal care or medication. Some listings also report care for depression, anxiety and trauma. Michigan pages for dual diagnosis treatment and depression and trauma care list programs that report co-occurring treatment.

Does Michigan Medicaid or private insurance pay for eating disorder treatment?

Private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and TRICARE can help pay for eating disorder treatment, but whether a program accepts a given plan depends on both, so each listing shows the payment options it reports. Self-pay is another route some programs list.

Michigan Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan, the state’s expansion program since 2014, are run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Specialty behavioral health care for members is managed through regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans working with community mental health agencies, such as Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network and Lakeshore Regional Entity. Members can call the number on their card to ask whether eating disorder care runs through the regional plan or their health plan. Programs that take Medicaid or TRICARE in Michigan are listed separately.

Federal mental health parity law means most employer and marketplace plans that cover mental health cannot set tighter limits on it, such as stricter visit caps or harder prior approval, than on medical care. If a plan denies residential or PHP care, request the written criteria it used and file an appeal.

How can families in Michigan find and check an eating disorder program?

Families can compare listings by level of care, age group and payment, then check a program’s license and accreditation before admission. Listings note whether a program serves adolescents or adults, particular genders or LGBTQ+ clients, which languages staff speak, and whether family therapy or family-based treatment is offered.

Joint Commission and CARF accreditation can be looked up on each accreditor’s own website. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs licenses substance use disorder programs, and the admissions team can say which state license covers its eating disorder services.

Families in the Upper Peninsula or northern Michigan may weigh an out-of-state program when the right level is far away; ask the insurer about out-of-network coverage before travel. ANAD runs a free peer helpline, F.E.A.S.T. supports parents and caregivers, and NEDA, which closed its helpline in 2023, keeps online resources. Other treatment types are on the Michigan treatment page.
