Do I need to worry about altitude sickness?

Possibly, above 8,000 feet. CDC says travelers to that elevation may be at risk of altitude illness caused by low oxygen in the air. Acute mountain sickness brings headache, tiredness, loss of appetite and nausea, and symptoms usually clear on their own within a couple of days.

CDC advises against travel from low elevation to above 9,000 feet in one day, and says never to sleep higher while any symptoms are present.

How do you avoid altitude sickness when arriving in the mountains?

Ascend gradually. CDC's Yellow Book says spending at least two to three nights around 8,000 to 9,000 feet before going higher is markedly protective. Above 9,000 feet, raise sleeping elevation by no more than 1,600 feet a day and add an extra day for every 3,300 feet climbed.

Medicines exist that prevent acute mountain sickness and shorten acclimatization; CDC says to ask a doctor which one suits you before traveling.

Can altitude affect people with health conditions?

Yes. CDC tells anyone with heart disease, lung disease or diabetes to speak with a doctor before traveling to high elevation, and notes that diabetes can be harder to manage there. Severe forms of altitude illness affecting the brain or lungs can be life-threatening and require moving to lower elevation immediately.

Share a full medication and diagnosis list with the admissions clinician before traveling, so any altitude-related adjustment is planned rather than improvised.

Should you avoid alcohol at high altitude?

Yes. CDC advises not drinking alcohol and not doing heavy exercise for at least the first 48 hours after arriving above 8,000 feet. The National Weather Service separately advises avoiding caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes in extreme cold and staying hydrated to help prevent frostbite.

When is ski season?

Ski seasons run through winter, and the average U.S. ski area was open 106 days in 2023-24, seven days shorter than the prior season. That year started with unseasonably warm temperatures that delayed openings in many regions, and average snowfall was 158 inches against a 10-year average near 173 inches.

Snowmaking is what kept the shortfall to seven days, so opening and closing dates depend on each resort's equipment as much as on natural snow.

What are winter road conditions like in ski country?

Demanding from late fall through spring. The Federal Highway Administration says adverse road weather contributes to thousands of crashes nationally each year. Colorado runs its Traction Law every year from September 1 through May 31 on the I-70 Mountain Corridor between Dotsero and Morrison, and can activate it on any state highway.

Check the state transportation department's road conditions before any drive to or from a mountain-town program, including family visits.

Do you need snow tires or chains to drive to the mountains?

Often, yes. Under a Colorado traction law, passenger vehicles need at least 3/16-inch tread on winter, all-weather or mud-and-snow rated tires, or must carry chains or an approved traction device. When the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law is active, every vehicle must carry chains or an approved alternative.

Colorado requires two-wheel-drive vehicles to carry chains from September 1 to May 31 regardless of tires, and Caltrans says studded tires do not count as chains in California.

How cold does it get and what are the risks?

Cold enough to injure exposed skin quickly. The National Weather Service says a wind chill of -20 F causes frostbite in about 30 minutes, and values near -25 F can cause it within 15 minutes. Hypothermia means a body temperature below 95 F.

Hypothermia can develop even at air temperatures of 30 to 50 F when a person or their clothing is wet, which matters for outdoor activity sessions.
