Rehabs That Take Medicaid

Medicaid pays for addiction treatment with little or no cost to you, and in the states that expanded it, coverage reaches adults who assume they earn too much to qualify. Because each state runs its own program under its own name, the benefit and the network vary considerably from one state line to the next.

Work requirements arrive in most states from January 2027 under the 2025 federal law. People in substance use disorder treatment are among those Congress exempted, but the exemption must be verified rather than assumed, so anyone in treatment should understand how their state intends to identify them.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicaid cover rehab?

Yes, every state Medicaid program pays for some addiction treatment. Inpatient and outpatient hospital care, physician services and medication assisted treatment are required everywhere, and children under 21 get any medically necessary service through EPSDT. Residential, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization and non-hospital detox are state options, so the list differs by state.

As of January 1, 2026, 38 states including DC run a Section 1115 substance use demonstration, which lets Medicaid pay for residential treatment in larger facilities.

Medicaid Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicaid/
Does Medicaid cover alcohol rehab?

Yes, alcohol use disorder is treated under the same substance use benefits as drug treatment, with no federal rule separating the two. Which levels of care are available, from outpatient counseling to residential treatment, depends on the state plan and any waiver that state operates.

Medicines for alcohol use disorder are handled through the state drug list; California's Medi-Cal Rx contract drugs list, for example, includes acamprosate and disulfiram.

Alcohol Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/addictions/alcohol/
Does Medicaid cover detox?

Yes, though the setting matters. Detox in a hospital is a mandatory Medicaid service in every state, since inpatient and outpatient hospital care must be covered. Free-standing inpatient or outpatient withdrawal management is a state option; a 2015 federal count found some form of detox in 43 states and DC.

Coverage has widened since then through Section 1115 waivers, and in waiver states placement is decided with ASAM criteria rather than a fixed day limit.

Does Medicaid Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes, and for many people it is the most complete coverage available. Medicaid generally covers the full continuum of addiction care with minimal cost sharing: screening and assessment, medically supervised withdrawal, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, outpatient therapy, medication for opioid use disorder, case management and peer support.

Medicaid is also the largest payer for addiction treatment in the country, which shapes the treatment landscape. Facilities that accept it are frequently the ones best equipped to work with people who have no other resources, and services such as peer recovery support and care coordination are more commonly covered here than under commercial insurance.

The Name on Your Card

Every state runs Medicaid differently and many use their own branding: Medi-Cal in California, TennCare in Tennessee, AHCCCS in Arizona, MO HealthNet in Missouri, Cardinal Care in Virginia. Most states then contract managed care plans on top. When you call a facility, give the plan name and your state rather than saying Medicaid, because it is the plan that determines which programs are in network.

Expansion and Who Qualifies

Forty states and the District of Columbia expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, extending eligibility to adults under a set income threshold regardless of whether they have dependent children. In the states that did not expand, childless adults generally do not qualify at any income unless they are aged, blind or disabled, which leaves a coverage gap that no amount of paperwork will bridge.
