Rehabs That Take CHAMPVA

CHAMPVA covers the spouses and children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, along with survivors of veterans who died from one. Addiction treatment is covered, including medical detox, inpatient and residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy.

CHAMPVA is administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs rather than being insurance you purchase, and it is frequently confused with TRICARE. The two are separate programs with different rules and different phone numbers, so make sure you are reading guidance written for the right one.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does CHAMPVA cover rehab?

Yes. CHAMPVA covers treatment for alcohol and substance use disorders, including inpatient detoxification, inpatient and partial hospitalization rehabilitation, residential treatment centers, intensive outpatient care and outpatient therapy. Prior authorization is required for this care, and when CHAMPVA pays first the beneficiary owes a 25 percent cost share.

Facilities must be state-licensed and accredited by The Joint Commission, the Council on Accreditation, CARF or TRICARE. Authorization requests start at 833-930-0816.

Inpatient Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/inpatient/
Does CHAMPVA cover detox?

Yes, detoxification from drugs or alcohol is covered as an inpatient service under general medical supervision. Pre-authorization is required, and a stay is limited to seven days per admission unless a waiver is granted. No deductible applies to inpatient care, but the 25 percent cost share does.

Seven days is the only numeric behavioral health limit stated in the CHAMPVA Guidebook. Requests go to 833-930-0816 or VHAHAC.preauthorizationFM@va.gov.

Medical Detoxhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/detox-centers/medical-detox/
Does CHAMPVA cover inpatient and residential rehab?

Yes, with pre-authorization. Substance use inpatient rehabilitation and residential treatment center care are covered when the facility is state-licensed and accredited by The Joint Commission, the Council on Accreditation, CARF or TRICARE. No deductible applies to these levels, and the 25 percent cost share stands when CHAMPVA pays first.

When another health plan is primary and has already authorized the stay, separate CHAMPVA authorization is not needed, and the beneficiary usually owes nothing.

What CHAMPVA Is

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs shares the cost of care for certain family members of veterans. It covers the spouse or child of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, the survivors of a veteran who died from such a condition, and some others in defined circumstances.

It is not TRICARE, and it is not VA healthcare for the veteran themselves. Confusing the three is the commonest problem people hit, and it sends them to the wrong phone number and the wrong rules.

Who Is Covered by What

The veteran is served by VA healthcare and, where applicable, VA Community Care. Military families connected to active duty or retired service are generally covered by TRICARE. CHAMPVA covers family members of veterans in the specific circumstances above, and a person eligible for TRICARE is generally not eligible for CHAMPVA.

Does CHAMPVA Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Covered services include inpatient and outpatient treatment for substance use disorder, medically supervised detoxification, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, outpatient counseling and medication for opioid use disorder.
