Rehabs That Take Indian Health Service

The Indian Health Service provides health care to members of federally recognized tribes, delivered through IHS facilities, tribally operated programs and urban Indian health organizations. Addiction treatment is available at no cost to eligible people, including withdrawal management, residential care, outpatient counseling and medication for opioid use disorder.

IHS is a health system rather than insurance, and it is funded by annual appropriation rather than by claims. That distinction matters a great deal: eligibility does not guarantee that a particular service exists near you, and the Purchased/Referred Care route has its own rules that are worth understanding early.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Is the Indian Health Service insurance?

No. The Indian Health Service is a federal health care delivery system inside the Department of Health and Human Services, not an insurance program and not an entitlement like Medicare or Medicaid. It provides care directly to American Indians and Alaska Natives through IHS, tribal and urban Indian facilities.

Because there is no premium and no claim, funding comes from an annual appropriation, which IHS says covers an estimated 60 percent of the health care needs of eligible individuals.

Federally Run Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/type/federally-run/
Does the Indian Health Service cover rehab?

Yes, in the sense that substance use treatment is provided. IHS, tribal and urban Indian programs deliver withdrawal management, residential care, outpatient counseling and medication for opioid use disorder directly, and Purchased/Referred Care can pay for treatment elsewhere when the rules are met and funds remain.

Purchased/Referred Care has four requirements: residency in a PRC Delivery Area, notification, medical priority, and use of alternate resources such as Medicaid or private insurance first.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
Does the Indian Health Service cover detox?

Yes. Alcohol and substance detoxification sits in Priority 1 (Core), the highest level of the Purchased/Referred Care medical priority levels dated February 6, 2025, so it is among the first services funded when care is referred outside an IHS or tribal facility.

PRC funds cannot be spent on a service that is available at an IHS facility within 90 minutes' travel time, so local detox is used first where it exists.

How IHS Works

The Indian Health Service is an agency of the federal government fulfilling treaty and statutory obligations to provide health care to American Indian and Alaska Native people. Care is delivered three ways: directly by IHS facilities, by tribes and tribal organizations operating their own programs, and by urban Indian health organizations serving people living away from tribal lands.

Roughly seven in ten American Indian and Alaska Native people live in urban areas, so the urban programs matter more than the reservation-centered picture suggests. If you are enrolled and living in a city, an urban Indian health organization may be your nearest culturally grounded option.

Purchased and Referred Care

Where a service is not available at an IHS or tribal facility, Purchased/Referred Care can pay an outside provider. It requires authorization in advance, it is limited by annual funding, and it applies priority levels when funds are constrained. Never assume an outside admission will be paid retrospectively. Get the referral approved first, in writing.

Does IHS Cover Rehab?

Addiction treatment is part of IHS behavioral health services. What exists varies enormously by location: some tribal programs run residential treatment, cultural healing programs and youth services; others provide outpatient counseling only, with anything more intensive requiring a referral elsewhere.
