Free rehab means the person receiving treatment is not billed for it, because a state contract, a federal program, a charity or a church pays instead. Listings here fall into five groups: programs recorded in state and federal treatment registers as accepting no payment, Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers, rescue missions, VA medical centers and clinics, and Indian Health Service and tribal programs.

Each group is free to a defined set of people, and the page explains who. Listings draw on state and federal treatment registers, VA and IHS facility lists, licensing records and the organizations’ own program pages. Waiting lists are common and eligibility often depends on residency, veteran status or tribal enrollment, so call the program before travelling. Is There Really Such a Thing as Free Rehab?

Yes, free drug and alcohol rehab exists in every state, but almost all of it is free to a defined group rather than to everyone. Treatment costs money to deliver, so a free program is one where somebody else pays: a state substance use agency under contract, the federal government through the VA or the Indian Health Service, a national charity such as The Salvation Army, or a church-run mission funded by donations. The person in treatment is not billed, which is what “free” means on this page.
