Rehabs That Take Medicare

Medicare covers addiction treatment, and the benefit has widened considerably in recent years. Opioid treatment programs became a covered benefit in 2020, intensive outpatient programs were added in 2024, and marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors can now bill Medicare directly, which enlarged the pool of clinicians available.

How you pay depends on the route you hold. Original Medicare with Part B and a supplement works differently from a Medicare Advantage plan, which adds a network and an annual out-of-pocket cap. Neither covers sober living housing. Confirm which you hold before contacting a facility, because the answers diverge quickly.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicare cover rehab for drugs or alcohol?

Yes. Part A covers inpatient stays in a general or psychiatric hospital when a doctor orders the admission, and Part B covers outpatient treatment: individual and group psychotherapy, medication management, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment programs. Alcohol screening and brief counseling are also covered under Part B.

Non-hospital residential treatment is not among the settings medicare.gov names. Coverage of each service depends on medical necessity and on the provider accepting Medicare.

Medicare Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicare/
Does Medicare cover inpatient drug rehab?

Yes, when it is an inpatient hospital stay. The individual must be admitted on a doctor's order documenting that inpatient care is needed, and the hospital must accept Medicare. Part A covers the room, meals, nursing and drugs given during treatment, including methadone for opioid use disorder; Part B covers provider services.

In 2026 the Part A deductible is $1,736 per benefit period, with $434 a day for days 61-90 and $868 a day for lifetime reserve days.

Medicare Inpatient Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicare/medicare-inpatient-rehab/
Does Medicare cover residential rehab?

No, not as a distinct benefit. The settings medicare.gov names are inpatient hospital care under Part A and outpatient care under Part B: provider offices, hospital outpatient departments, community mental health centers, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics and opioid treatment programs. Non-hospital residential treatment is not listed.

A Medicare Advantage plan may add benefits, and someone with full Medicaid as well may have state coverage for residential care.

Does Medicare Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Medicare covers inpatient and outpatient treatment for substance use disorder, medication for opioid use disorder, and the therapy that goes alongside both. The benefit is no longer the narrow one it was a decade ago, and several of the additions came recently enough that older articles on the subject are actively misleading.

Addiction in later life is also more common than the public picture suggests. Drinking that increases after retirement or bereavement, alcohol interacting with prescribed medication, and long-term benzodiazepine or opioid use that began as legitimate treatment are all frequent, and all are regularly missed because nobody asks.

What Changed Recently

Opioid treatment programs became a Medicare benefit in 2020, covering methadone alongside counseling and testing. Intensive outpatient programs became covered in 2024, filling the gap between weekly therapy and a hospital stay. Marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors became eligible to enroll as Medicare providers in 2024, which widened access considerably in rural areas.

How the Parts Fit Together

Part A: Inpatient Care

Part A covers inpatient hospital care, including detox and inpatient treatment delivered in a hospital setting, subject to the deductible for each benefit period. Care in a freestanding psychiatric hospital carries a lifetime limit of 190 days, which does not apply to a psychiatric unit inside a general hospital. That distinction is worth knowing, and worth asking any facility to clarify about itself.
