Medicare Detox Coverage

Medicare pays for medically supervised withdrawal management when the provider is enrolled and the care is judged medically necessary. Part A generally covers an inpatient stay, Part B covers outpatient visits. Programs listed here accept Medicare, which matters for older adults and people qualifying through disability.

What you owe depends on the deductible, the benefit period and whether you carry a supplement. Medicare Advantage plans add network limits and prior authorization rules of their own. Ask a program how it bills before admission, then compare the options below and contact the facility directly.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicare cover detox?

Yes. Medicare covers detoxification when it is medically necessary. The national coverage determination on drug treatment says coverage is available when someone needs detoxification or rehabilitation as a hospital inpatient, and it also covers treatment in a hospital outpatient department for those who do not need inpatient intensity.

Decisions on medical necessity, the level of care and the length of treatment are made by Medicare Administrative Contractors based on accepted medical practice.

Medicare Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicare/
Does Medicare Part A cover inpatient detox?

Yes. Part A covers medically necessary detoxification received as a hospital inpatient, treated like any other hospital admission. The hospital must accept Medicare for Part A to pay the stay, and the admission starts a benefit period that determines what you owe.

Part A also pays for the methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone given while you are a hospital inpatient.

Hospital Detoxhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/detox-centers/hospital-detox/
Does Medicare Part B cover outpatient detox?

Part B covers treatment in a hospital outpatient department for someone discharged from an inpatient stay or who needs treatment but not the intensity found only in an inpatient hospital. Coverage follows the same rules that apply to outpatient hospital services generally, and the care must be reasonable and necessary.

Outpatient mental health visits cost 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the Part B deductible, with a separate hospital amount possible.

Medicare detox means withdrawal management paid for by Medicare, and almost all of it happens in a hospital. Part A pays for a medically necessary admission as an inpatient, and Part B pays for treatment in a hospital outpatient department. The national coverage rule Medicare uses for this is old and short: where it is medically necessary for a patient to receive detoxification as a hospital inpatient, coverage in that setting is available.

The setting is the distinction that decides everything else. Medicare has no benefit called detox with its own day count, so a stay is either an inpatient hospital admission under Part A or outpatient hospital care under Part B, and a detox center that is neither of those two things sits outside Original Medicare. That is also why observation status, benefit periods and the three-day rule end up mattering more here than prior authorization does.

This guide covers what Medicare pays for in each detox setting, who decides how long a stay runs, how observation status changes what a member owes, the 2026 Part A deductible and daily amounts, which withdrawal medications are covered under which part of Medicare, what the program is expected to arrange afterwards, and how to find a hospital that takes Medicare.
