Psychiatric Hospital: How Admission and Coverage Work

Psychiatric hospitals treat mental health conditions as their main work, and many also handle co-occurring substance use. Admission often follows a crisis, an assessment in an emergency department or a referral from an outpatient prescriber, and the focus is stabilization under close observation.

Voluntary and involuntary admissions work differently, and the rules are set by state law rather than by the hospital. Ask how long a typical stay runs and what care follows discharge. Listings record accreditation and payment types where published, so you can narrow the field first.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is a psychiatric hospital?

A psychiatric hospital is a freestanding hospital whose main work is inpatient diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. Medicare defines it as an institution primarily engaged in providing psychiatric services, under physician supervision, and describes it as a facility that cares only for individuals with mental health disorders rather than general medical patients.

To participate in Medicare it must also meet general hospital requirements, keep clinical records showing the degree and intensity of treatment, and staff an active treatment program.

Hospital Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/type/hospital/
What is the difference between a psychiatric hospital and a psychiatric unit?

A psychiatric hospital is an entire institution devoted to mental illness treatment, while a psychiatric unit is a section of a general hospital. Medicare says a psychiatric wing or building of a general hospital cannot be certified as a distinct part psychiatric hospital; it is covered by the general hospital's certification instead.

The difference matters for coverage: Medicare's 190-day lifetime cap applies in a freestanding psychiatric hospital but not in a certified distinct part unit.

Inpatient Psychiatric Unithttps://rehabseekers.com/type/hospital/inpatient-psychiatric-unit/
What happens in a psychiatric hospital?

Admission starts with an admitting diagnosis, a record of legal status and the stated reasons for admission. A psychiatric evaluation follows within 60 hours, covering medical history, mental status and an inventory of personal strengths. Staff then write an individual treatment plan with short-term and long-range goals and assigned team responsibilities.

Progress notes are recorded at least weekly for the first two months of a stay and at least monthly afterward, with recommendations for revising that plan.

A psychiatric hospital is a freestanding hospital whose entire purpose is inpatient diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. CMS defines it as an institution primarily engaged in providing, by or under the supervision of a physician, psychiatric services for the diagnosis and treatment of mentally ill persons, and Medicare describes it as a hospital that cares only for patients with mental health disorders, in contrast to a general hospital.

The freestanding part carries real financial weight. Medicare Part A pays for no more than 190 days of psychiatric hospital care in a lifetime, a cap that does not apply to a psychiatric unit inside a general hospital, and a psychiatric wing of a general hospital cannot be certified as a psychiatric hospital at all. The building a bed sits in decides which rules govern the bill.

This page explains what a psychiatric hospital is and is not, who it treats, how an admission and stay run under the federal conditions these hospitals must meet, what a stay costs under Medicare, Medicaid, private coverage and self-pay, and how to check a hospital’s accreditation and quality record before choosing one.
