Rehabs That Take Federal Employee Program (FEP)

Federal employees, retirees and their families can get coverage through the Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program (FEP). Benefits can include drug and alcohol treatment.

FEP plans are offered through the Federal Employees Health Benefits program, and each option, such as Standard or Basic, has its own rules on networks, cost sharing and approval for inpatient care. What you receive depends on the option you chose and the level of care needed. Massachusetts centers listed here name FEP on their own websites. Before admission, call the facility and the number on your FEP card to ask about network status, prior authorization and out-of-pocket costs.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does FEP Blue cover rehab?

Yes. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan covers mental health and substance use disorder care under Section 5(e), including inpatient hospital stays, residential treatment centers, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient counseling. Cost sharing can be no greater than for comparable medical care, and all services must be medically necessary.

All three options, FEP Blue Standard, Basic and Focus, include these benefits, though Basic and Focus pay only when you use Preferred providers.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does FEP Blue cover inpatient or residential rehab?

Yes, with precertification before admission. On FEP Blue Standard you pay $350 per admission at a Preferred facility, with unlimited days in 2026. Basic charges $425 per day up to $2,975 per admission, and FEP Blue Focus leaves you 30 percent coinsurance in network.

A local plan guide reports Focus residential stays are limited to 30 calendar days a year. Precertification must be in place before you are admitted.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
Does FEP Blue need prior authorization for rehab?

Yes. Precertification is required for inpatient hospital admissions and residential treatment center admissions under Standard, Basic and Focus. If nobody obtains it, benefits for the inpatient stay are cut by $500. Focus also requires prior authorization for outpatient residential treatment center care.

Usually the facility or physician requests it, but the member stays responsible. Non-urgent decisions come within 15 days, and urgent requests within 72 hours.

The Federal Employee Program, marketed as FEP Blue, is the nationwide fee-for-service PPO written for federal and postal employees, retirees and their families under the Federal Employees Health Benefits and Postal Service Health Benefits programs. Its formal name is the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Service Benefit Plan, and addiction treatment sits in Section 5(e) of the brochure alongside mental health care.

FEP is not a stand-alone insurance company. It is sponsored and administered by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association together with participating Blue plans, and the local Blue plan where care is delivered handles provider contracting, precertification and claims. A federal retiree in Tennessee and one in Arizona hold the same benefit, but the phone number that authorizes a residential admission is different in each state. FEP has been part of FEHB since 1960 and covers around 5.5 million enrollees and dependents in the United States and overseas.

This guide sets out which levels of addiction care the benefit pays for, where precertification applies and what happens if it is skipped, the 2026 copays and coinsurance under FEP Blue Standard, FEP Blue Basic and FEP Blue Focus, how medication for opioid and alcohol use is handled, and how to work out which treatment program sits in the Preferred network.
