Yes. Coverage spans medically supervised withdrawal, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient care, alongside medication for opioid use disorder, as federal parity law requires.

Florida Blue is the dominant health insurer in the state, which means its network largely defines what is realistically available to a great many Floridians. It also means it is the plan most often named by facilities marketing to residents.

What the Warning Signs Look Like

Some of these are illegal in Florida and all of them should end the conversation.

A program offering to pay for your travel, your rent or your living costs in exchange for entering treatment. A person who approaches you at a meeting or online offering to arrange a placement, sometimes called a body broker. An offer to waive your deductible or coinsurance entirely. A promise of a guaranteed cure or a specific success rate. Pressure to fly in from another state immediately. Repeated urine testing far beyond clinical need.

Check the facility’s license with the Florida Department of Children and Families, check accreditation with the Joint Commission or CARF separately, and confirm network status with Florida Blue directly rather than accepting the program’s account of it.

Coverage by Level of Care

Detox

Covered where dependence is physical, with prior authorization typical for inpatient admission. Emergency care applies regardless of network, and acute withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines belongs in an emergency department.

Residential Treatment

Covered subject to medical necessity, authorization and concurrent review. Ask a program how it manages concurrent review with Florida Blue, and what happens financially if an extension is refused partway through a stay.

PHP, IOP and Outpatient

All covered, with authorization typical for the higher levels. Florida has extensive capacity at these levels, and they are frequently what a plan will approve where residential is declined.

Medication for Opioid Use Disorder

Buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone are covered, with methadone through licensed programs. Be cautious of any residential program that discourages medication for opioid dependence on philosophical grounds, since the evidence favors it strongly.

The Marchman Act

Florida law allows for involuntary assessment and stabilization of someone impaired by substance use who has lost the capacity to make a rational decision about it and poses a risk to themselves or others. Families search for this frequently and understand it poorly.

It is a court process with real limits: it produces assessment and short-term stabilization rather than a full course of treatment, and it works best where it is a bridge into voluntary care rather than a substitute for it. Speak to a lawyer familiar with it before starting, and be aware that coverage for what follows still runs through your plan in the ordinary way.

Verifying Coverage

Ask whether your plan is self-funded through an employer, since Florida’s state protections do not reach self-funded plans and appeals then follow federal rules instead.

What Treatment Costs

Your out-of-pocket maximum caps annual exposure for in-network covered care. Where a program tells you it will handle the difference, ask exactly what that means in writing, because arrangements of that kind are frequently where the trouble starts.

People Coming From Out of State

Florida draws people from across the country for treatment, and much of the marketing is aimed at them. If you hold a Blue plan from another state, the BlueCard program may allow a Florida facility to be paid where it is in network with Florida Blue, though whether your own plan pays out of network depends on whether it is a PPO or an HMO.

Co-occurring treatment is covered on parity terms. Continuing outpatient care and medication management after residential treatment are covered. Recovery housing is not a covered medical benefit, and given the size of Florida’s sober home market, checking certification with the Florida Association of Recovery Residences before moving in is worth the time.
