Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Common questions about Croatia

Answered from what is listed here.

Who regulates addiction treatment providers in Croatia?

Croatia's Ministry of Health (Ministarstvo zdravstva), the national government health department, decides whether a provider meets the rules on premises, staff and equipment before it can operate, according to the consolidated Health Care Act. Providers must also join the National Register of Health Care Providers.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
How does public addiction treatment work in Croatia?

Croatia's public system is mandatory health insurance run by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (HZZO), the state health insurer, and county public health institutes provide outpatient addiction treatment, with detox in hospital addiction departments. People can approach their county institute's addiction team directly, and drug testing there is free.

State Funded Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/payment/state-funded/
Is there an addiction helpline in Croatia?

The Croatian Institute of Public Health, the national public health agency, runs a free addiction info line on 0800 2000 70, and the same service answers on 091 4683 070 by call, SMS, WhatsApp or Viber, with email at ovisnosti@hzjz.hr.

Calls to the 091 mobile number are charged at standard carrier rates. Outpatient care is listed at most of the rehabs in Croatia, and public funding at most of them.

Addiction treatment in Croatia rests on a network of public services: each county public health institute runs a mental health, prevention and outpatient addiction team, and detox takes place in hospital addiction departments. Public care is funded through compulsory health insurance run by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund (HZZO), the national health insurer.

Rehab is listed in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Zadar and Osijek. Outpatient care is listed at most of the rehabs in Croatia, while residential treatment, inpatient care and day treatment each appear at some.

Croatia’s listings are assembled from national health registers, licensing and accreditation records, and the details providers publish about their own services. Publicly funded treatment is listed at most of them, and public health insurance is accepted at about half.

Rehab in Croatia at a glance

  • Public route: ask directly at the county public health institute’s addiction team, which needs no referral
  • Residential rehab: an estimated typical range of €5,900 to €16,600 a month
  • Short stays: up to 90 days in any 180-day period under common EU visa rules
  • Longer stays: a long-stay visa or temporary stay permit

How does public addiction treatment work in Croatia?

Public addiction treatment in Croatia is split between two settings: outpatient care at the mental health, prevention and outpatient addiction services of the county public health institutes, and detox in hospital addiction departments. Both sit inside the public health system funded by compulsory insurance through the Croatian Health Insurance Fund.

The Croatian Institute of Public Health, the national public health body, publishes a list of the county institutes on its network page, so a person can find the service for their county. Drug testing at the county institutes is free of charge.

How do I start treatment in Croatia?

Starting treatment in Croatia means asking for help directly at the addiction team of the county public health institute where a person lives. The Croatian Institute of Public Health also runs a free addiction info line on 0800 200 070, which can explain the options and point someone toward the nearest county service.

The info line also takes calls, SMS, WhatsApp and Viber messages on a mobile number, 091 4683 070, and answers email at ovisnosti@hzjz.hr. Calls to the mobile number are charged at standard rates.

Is methadone available in Croatia?

Methadone is available in Croatia through the public system. Hospital addiction departments set the right methadone dose, and ongoing substitution treatment is then delivered mainly by family doctors and nurses working with the county mental health and addiction services, so treatment continues close to home once it is stable.

Medication-assisted treatment is listed at a few of the rehabs in Croatia, and methadone and buprenorphine at a few each. The Croatian Institute of Public Health has also given out take-home naloxone, a nasal spray that reverses an opioid overdose, through the county addiction services and to people leaving prison.

How are providers in Croatia licensed?

Providers in Croatia need a decision from the Ministry of Health confirming that their premises, staff and medical equipment meet the required conditions before they can operate, under the Health Care Act. The same act requires every health care provider to be entered in a national register kept by the Croatian Institute of Public Health.

Some residential therapeutic communities in Croatia are run by associations, so asking a community which rules it operates under and who funds its places is a sensible step before admission. Families can also ask a provider to confirm that it appears in the national register of health care providers.

Can a person be treated against their will in Croatia?

Involuntary placement in a psychiatric institution in Croatia is allowed only for someone with a severe mental disorder who, because of it, seriously and directly endangers their own or other people’s life, health or safety. It needs a psychiatrist’s decision and a court decision, initially for up to 30 days, under the Act on Protection of Persons with Mental Disorders.

The act does not mention addiction by name. Under Croatian law, a parent or legal guardian signs consent to medical treatment for anyone under 18, except in an emergency.

What does rehab in Croatia cost?

Private residential rehab in Croatia has an estimated typical range of €5,900 to €16,600 a month, and medical detox €3,600 to €11,200. Outpatient care is the lowest-cost level, at an estimated €700 to €2,400 a month, with day treatment at €3,600 to €7,700. Public care is funded through compulsory health insurance.

The level of care, the length of the program and what it includes all shape the final figure. A written statement of the fee before admission makes it easier to plan.

How do costs in Croatia vary by level of care?

Costs in Croatia climb with the intensity of care, from an estimated €700 a month at the low end of outpatient treatment to €16,600 a month at the top of the residential range. Medical detox and day treatment fall between the two, and the table sets out the four levels listed in Croatia.

Level of careEstimated typical range per month
Medical detox€3,600 to €11,200
Residential€5,900 to €16,600
Day treatment (PHP)€3,600 to €7,700
Outpatient€700 to €2,400

Self-pay is listed at a few of the rehabs in Croatia, and foundation funding, where a charitable body meets part of the cost, at some.

What does a person pay for public treatment in Croatia?

Public addiction treatment in Croatia is funded through compulsory health insurance run by the Croatian Health Insurance Fund, and drug testing at the county public health institutes is free. State-funded outpatient rehab is listed at about half of the country’s rehabs, and state-funded inpatient care at some.

Anyone unsure what they might be asked to contribute can raise it with the county service at the first appointment, before any treatment plan is agreed.

Who do Croatian rehabs serve?

Croatian rehabs serve adults above all, with adult rehab listed at nearly all of them and programs for men and for women at most. Teen rehab is listed at some, while veterans’ programs, senior rehab and couples rehab appear at a few.

Trauma-informed care is listed at a few of the country’s rehabs, and sober living at a few as well.

Which substances do rehabs in Croatia treat?

Alcohol is treated at most of the rehabs in Croatia, covering beer, wine and spirits, and some list alcohol-only programs. Opioids, including heroin and prescription painkillers, are treated at a few, as are benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium, and stimulants.

Mental health treatment is listed at nearly all of Croatia’s rehabs, and psychiatric medication management at some.

Can I travel to Croatia for rehab?

Croatia applies the common EU visa policy, so visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, either without a visa or on a short-stay Type C visa, depending on nationality. Stays over 90 days need a long-stay visa or a temporary stay permit, and medical treatment is not a named purpose for temporary stay.

Rehab is also listed in Italy, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Greece and Switzerland, and in the United Kingdom.

Can I bring prescribed medication into Croatia?

Travelers to Croatia may bring medicines for personal use, generally up to one month’s supply, with medical documentation. Medicines containing narcotic drugs are limited to a 5-day supply with a prescription copy, medical history or certified doctor’s letter, rising to 15 days for people on substitution therapy or in addiction treatment.

Anyone arriving for treatment on methadone or a similar medicine can ask the receiving service in advance how ongoing doses will be arranged once the 15-day supply runs out.

Where can I get help in Croatia?

Croatia’s free addiction info line, run by the Croatian Institute of Public Health, answers on 0800 200 070, with a mobile number, 091 4683 070, for calls, SMS, WhatsApp and Viber. Alcoholics Anonymous holds meetings across Croatia, listed on aahrvatska.hr, the national AA site.

Health information about a person in treatment is confidential under Croatian law, alongside professional secrecy rules and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation.
