Does Oscar Health Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Yes. Oscar plans are sold on the ACA marketplace, and every marketplace plan must include mental health and substance use treatment among the essential health benefits. Coverage spans medical detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient therapy, subject to medical necessity and prior authorization.

Oscar entered the market as a technology-led insurer and has grown into one of the larger marketplace carriers, particularly since other carriers withdrew from the exchanges. Narrow Networks Are the Trade-Off

What Changed for 2026

Two things moved at once. Several carriers left the individual market, which pushed members toward those that stayed and made Oscar larger in some cities than it had been. At the same time federal subsidy support narrowed, and the average marketplace deductible climbed by around a thousand dollars per person as enrollees traded down to cheaper tiers.

The consequence for someone facing treatment is concentrated in the deductible. A plan that looks affordable monthly can leave a substantial sum payable before residential care is meaningfully covered, and that sum is worth calculating before admission rather than after the first invoice.

Virtual Care as a Front Door

Oscar’s virtual care offering is genuinely useful for this particular problem. Many people will discuss a drinking or drug problem with a screen before they will sit in a waiting room, and a virtual primary care appointment is a legitimate route to an assessment and a referral.

Virtual care also covers ongoing therapy and, in many cases, buprenorphine management for opioid use disorder, which has become a permanent option rather than a temporary measure. What it cannot do is supervise a withdrawal that carries medical risk.

Medically supervised withdrawal is covered where dependence is physical, with prior authorization for inpatient admission. Emergency care is covered regardless of network status, and dangerous withdrawal belongs in an emergency department rather than in a queue for authorization.

Residential Treatment

The benefit is the same across substances; the pathway differs. Alcohol and benzodiazepine dependence carry withdrawal risk that supports a supervised setting, and that clinical fact usually makes detox authorization straightforward.

Opioid use disorder is covered including medication, and Oscar’s virtual care model suits buprenorphine management particularly well once someone is stable. Stimulant use disorder is treated behaviorally since no medication is approved, and on a narrow network plan the practical question becomes which contracted program actually runs an intensive outpatient track.

If Your City Is Not Well Served

Oscar builds networks metro by metro, so coverage depth varies enormously between a city where Oscar has anchored a large health system and one where it holds a thin contract. If the network offers no suitable residential program locally, that is worth raising with Oscar directly rather than assuming nothing can be done.

Plans have obligations around adequate access to covered benefits. Where a network cannot deliver a covered service within reasonable reach, ask specifically about a network gap exception, which authorizes out-of-network care at in-network cost sharing. It is not advertised, and it is granted more often than most members realize.
