Does Cigna cover family therapy during luxury rehab?

Yes, Cigna plans describe family therapy among their outpatient behavioral services, and the Evernorth grid lists family and group therapy as needing no authorization. Whether it sits inside a residential daily rate or is billed apart depends on the program, so ask for a written breakdown.

What happens if Cigna covers only part of a luxury stay?

You pay the difference, which can include coinsurance, a gap to a private room and extras. Ask the program for an itemized estimate and Cigna for its expected payment. A self-pay client may ask for a good faith estimate, and a final bill that runs $400 or more over it can be disputed.

How long will Cigna pay for residential rehab?

Cigna decides by medical necessity, not a fixed number of days, unless your plan document sets a limit. Its own guide describes residential care as 28 days or more. Clinical updates go from the program to Cigna, and the authorized days may then be extended or cut.

Cigna is a commercial insurer. In the states the research covers, it lists no current Medicaid plan: California has no Cigna Medi-Cal plan, and Cigna’s Texas Medicaid contracts were sold to Molina in 2021. Luxury listings here do not list Medicaid either, so the questions on this page are about private plan rules, not public programs.

Cigna Healthcare belongs to The Cigna Group, and about four in five of its medical customers are in self-funded employer plans, where the employer sets the benefits and Cigna administers them. Evernorth Behavioral Health, a sister company, runs the behavioral benefit. Two Cigna cards can therefore carry very different rules for residential care.

For a Cigna member looking at a luxury rehab, the practical questions are the same in every state: which plan type is on the card, whether the program is in network or out of network for that plan, and whether Evernorth needs to preauthorize the residential stay.
