Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Rehabs That Take Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a joint federal and state program for children in families earning too much for Medicaid, and it can cover drug and alcohol treatment, varying by state, plan, network and level of care.Centers in several states name CHIP on their own websites. Each state runs its own version, sometimes under a different name, such as Child Health Plus in New York or Healthy Kids in Florida, and many states deliver it through Medicaid managed care plans. Before admission, contact the facility and your child’s plan to check network status, prior authorization or referral needs, and any copay.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does CHIP cover drug and alcohol rehab?

Yes. Separate CHIP programs have been required since October 24, 2019 to cover services that prevent, diagnose and treat substance use disorders, and children in Medicaid expansion CHIP get the state's Medicaid child benefit, including EPSDT. Which levels of care are covered is a state decision.

New York's Child Health Plus covers inpatient and outpatient treatment for alcoholism and substance use, and Florida KidCare lists substance use disorder treatment under mental health services.

Medicaid Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicaid/
Does CHIP cover rehab for teens?

Yes, treatment for a teenager falls inside the benefit, since CHIP covers children under 19. Separate CHIP programs must address a broad range of behavioral health symptoms and disorders, and any limit a state places on those services has to be exceedable when medically necessary.

Coverage ends when the child turns 19, so ask the state agency what comes next before a teenager ages out of the program.

Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/residential/
Does CHIP cover detox?

Yes, but the detail is set state by state. The federal CHIP behavioral health rule names no specific levels of care, so withdrawal management coverage follows the state's own benefit design, which must be sufficient to treat a broad range of behavioral health disorders in children.

Children in Medicaid expansion CHIP receive the state's Medicaid child package under EPSDT, which covers diagnostic and treatment services for anyone under 21.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program is a joint federal and state program that covers uninsured children under 19 in families that earn too much for Medicaid. It is not an insurance company. Federal rules are set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services within the US Department of Health and Human Services, and each state agency runs its own program and decides much of what addiction treatment looks like.

That is why the card in a parent’s hand often says something else. A state may run a separate CHIP, a Medicaid expansion CHIP, or both at once, and the brand name changes at every border: Child Health Plus in New York, Florida KidCare, CHP+ in Colorado, KidsCare in Arizona, CoverKids in Tennessee, Hawki in Iowa, KCHIP in Kentucky, Healthy Montana Kids, Nevada Check Up, ARKids First in Arkansas, PeachCare for Kids in Georgia. All 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories operate CHIP in some form.

The guide below covers what CHIP has to pay for in substance use treatment, where the federal floor stops and state choices begin, how authorization and medical necessity are decided, what a family can be charged, how medication for opioid use disorder is handled, and how to find a program that works with a child’s CHIP plan.
