Residential Treatment Centers for Teens

Young people in residential treatment keep schooling going, usually through on-site teaching or a partnership with a local district. Family therapy is normally built into the week rather than optional, because what changes at home shapes what happens once a young person comes home.

Parents should ask about the exact age range served, staff qualifications, how visits and phone contact are handled, and what the program’s policy is on transport at admission. State licensing rules for youth facilities vary. Listings show what each site records. Compare programs before deciding.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is a residential treatment center for teens?

A residential treatment center for teens is a live-in program where adolescents receive 24-hour care for substance use, mental health or behavioral needs. Schooling continues on site or through a local district, counseling runs daily, and family therapy is built into the week rather than added as an extra.

Federal law groups these centers with therapeutic boarding schools, wilderness programs and psychiatric residential programs under the broader heading of youth residential programs.

Residential Treatment Centershttps://rehabseekers.com/type/residential-facilities/
How much does teen residential rehab cost?

Residential treatment usually runs $6,000 to $30,000 a month, or roughly $200 to $1,000 a day, before insurance. A NIH-supported study of adolescent residential addiction programs found an average quoted price of $878 per day and over $26,000 for a month's stay.

Ownership moves the figure sharply: the same study reported daily averages of $1,211 at for-profit adolescent facilities and $395 at nonprofit ones.

Sliding Scale Residential Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/payment/sliding-scale/residential-rehab/
Does Medicaid cover teen residential treatment?

Yes, in most circumstances. Medicaid's psychiatric services benefit for individuals under 21 is optional for states to offer generally, but it must be provided to any child whose EPSDT screen finds a need for inpatient psychiatric care. Psychiatric residential treatment facilities are paid through a per diem rate covering room, board and treatment.

A child may be placed out of state when the state agency finds that suitable in-state care is unavailable.

A residential treatment center for teens is a program where an adolescent lives on site for 24-hour care covering substance use, mental health or behavioral needs. Federal law now groups it with a wider family of settings: the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act, signed in December 2024, defines a youth residential program to include wilderness and outdoor programs, boot camps, therapeutic boarding schools, behavior modification programs, residential treatment centers, qualified residential treatment programs, psychiatric residential programs, group homes and residential alternatives to incarceration.

Two things set this page apart from adult residential care. The first is consent: whether a parent can admit a 15-year-old, and whether a 15-year-old can admit themselves, is answered by state law and the answers differ sharply. The second is federal scrutiny. That Act directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to commission a National Academies study of the state of youth in these programs, with a first report due within three years and further reports every two years for a decade.

This guide covers what counts as one of these programs, how consent works and where it varies, what the newest adolescent placement standards expect of a program, what school and family involvement look like inside a stay, the daily and monthly prices one national study found, how Medicaid and CHIP pay for it, what to ask before a child is admitted, and the alternatives worth weighing first.
