Rehabs That Take UMR

UMR is a third-party administrator rather than an insurer. It processes claims for employers who pay their own medical costs, using UnitedHealthcare networks. Your benefits are written by your employer, which means the plan document rather than any insurance company decides what addiction treatment is covered.

This has one consequence worth knowing before anything else. Self-funded plans are governed by federal ERISA law rather than state insurance law, so the appeal route differs and state mandates generally do not apply. Ask your HR or benefits team for the summary plan description.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is UMR insurance?

UMR is not an insurance company. It is a third-party administrator owned by UnitedHealthcare that employers hire to run their self-funded health plans, handling claims processing, ID cards, member service and care management. The employer pays the claims, and the employer's plan document decides what addiction treatment is covered.

Because self-funded plans fall under federal ERISA law, state insurance mandates generally do not apply. Ask your HR or benefits team for the summary plan description.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Is UMR the same as UnitedHealthcare?

No, but UMR is part of it. UMR is a UnitedHealthcare company inside UnitedHealth Group, and it administers self-funded employer plans rather than selling insurance. Those plans usually run on a UnitedHealthcare network such as Choice Plus or Options PPO, so an ID card can carry both names.

Members manage benefits at umr.com using a HealthSafe ID rather than the UnitedHealthcare member site. The general UMR member line is 1-800-826-9781.

Private Insurance Acceptedhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/private-insurance-accepted/
Does UMR cover rehab?

Yes, in the sense that UMR-administered employer plans routinely cover substance use treatment, though there is no single UMR rehab benefit. Each employer's plan document sets the terms. UMR's 2025 Minnesota prior authorization report shows requests handled for residential chemical dependency, residential detox, intensive outpatient and outpatient behavioral care.

Call the member services number on the ID card, or read the summary plan description from HR, to see which levels of care and cost shares your plan uses.

What UMR Is

UMR is a UnitedHealthcare company that administers self-funded employer health plans. When an employer self-funds, it pays medical claims from its own money and hires an administrator to run the plan: process claims, provide a network, handle authorizations and answer member calls. UMR does that work, but the money and the benefit design belong to your employer.

Roughly two thirds of American workers with employer coverage are in self-funded plans, and most of them have no idea. The card looks like any other insurance card. The difference only becomes visible when something is denied.

Why This Matters for Rehab

Self-funded plans fall under ERISA, a federal law, rather than state insurance regulation. State mandates requiring particular addiction benefits generally do not reach them, and appeals run through the federal process rather than your state insurance department. Federal parity law does still apply, and it is the strongest protection you have.

Does UMR Cover Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

Almost certainly yes, and the reason is parity. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act applies to self-funded plans, so where a plan covers medical and surgical care it cannot apply tighter limits to substance use treatment. In practice, essentially all UMR-administered plans cover detox, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment.
