My experience at Haymarket Center was terrible and extremely disappointing. I went to Haymarket Center seeking medically supervised detox for opioid use disorder. Unfortunately, the experience was chaotic, frustrating,… and at times felt unsafe. Before arriving, I spent the entire night trying to get someone to answer the phone. When someone finally answered, I was told to arrive at 9:00 AM because they might have beds available. I called back later and spoke with a man who said they did have beds and that I should simply come in and go through intake. The intake process took approximately two hours. During that process, I witnessed what I believed were serious privacy and confidentiality violations involving other patients, and I personally experienced a situation that made me uncomfortable regarding the handling of my medical information. After finally reaching the men's detox unit, I spoke with a nurse and provided my medical history. I disclosed that I had previously experienced a seizure and had been told by a hospital physician that I had epilepsy. The nurse abruptly stopped the medical intake and told me that Haymarket could not accept me until I obtained seizure medication. A Haymarket counselor arranged transportation for me to Stroger Hospital. I spent approximately two hours in the emergency department. After reviewing my medical records, including records from other Chicago hospitals, the physician determined that there was no documentation that I had previously been prescribed Keppra and did not believe I needed it at that time. I was given a note explaining this and sent back to Haymarket. I then had to wait outside Stroger Hospital for approximately two hours while experiencing significant opioid withdrawal and feeling exhausted and distressed. Eventually, Haymarket picked me up and took me back. I had to go through additional questioning and administrative procedures before finally getting settled into the detox unit. Once admitted, I surrendered my clothing and belongings and took a shower. The following day, I became extremely sick from opioid withdrawal. During the entire time I was there, I did not see a physician or therapist. The counselors did not seem particularly interested in providing counseling or emotional support. The overall environment felt much more like a correctional facility than a treatment center. The accommodations were extremely basic, including thin foam mattresses covered in plastic. The food was also very difficult to eat, particularly for people already experiencing severe nausea and withdrawal symptoms. I understand that detox facilities are not hotels, and I wasn't expecting luxury accommodations. I was expecting medical care, compassion, counseling, and an environment focused on helping people stabilize and begin recovery. Unfortunately, that was not what I experienced. The entire facility felt more like a large shelter or flophouse than a place dedicated to addiction treatment. Many of the people there did not appear to be receiving much meaningful treatment or support. It is especially disheartening knowing that a facility like this receives public funding. People seeking detox are already vulnerable and often desperate for help. They deserve to be treated with dignity and receive appropriate medical and behavioral-health care. If you have another legitimate option for medically supervised detox, I strongly recommend researching it before choosing Haymarket. Based on my personal experience, I would not return.
Today im greatful for Haymarket and the staff that works there. They have helped me in my recovery and poured the upmost care into my ability to live, and maintain a life of sobriety. Mrs. Mary, Dr. Fletcher, Mrs.… Linda, Antwan, Rock,, Mr. Tyrone, Anthony, Mr. WILL, and all the other staff in MRH. Thank you again for your support and care of us that has come through Haymarket. It's a wonderful place to get back on track, and allow yourself the chance to live, and make a difference in society. Also for all the IOP, OP COUNSELORS, IM Truly blessed and greatful for your services and support. The medical team, thanks. To Mrs Watts for the Job opportunity. Im greatful. If there's anything I left out, please charge it to my head, and not my heart. THANK YOU HAYMARKET. I'm looking forward to my future endeavors, and the things yet to be accomplished.
truly the worst rehab in chicago! the counselors in women’s detox are pretty useless, foods horrible, just a toxic environment to recover in
I got dropped off in woman's detox. They tell me i have to go to the hospital and get medically cleared to make sure i didnt have withdrawls. I sat in the e r for over 12 hours and got cleared. Than i go back to… haymarket and they tell me they didnt accept my insurance. But when I called the lady on the phone said they take all insurances. Its really sad that I was actually trying to get help and they didnt do anything for me.
Help someone my sister is in the rehab her child just got killed and they won't give her my number to call home to let her know patient confidentiality this place is horrific HOW DO I BARRY MY SISTERS CHILD WITHOUT HER… RHE SECURITY MAN ANSWERING THE PHONE CALL WONT GIVE HER MY NUMBER HE TOLD ME HE HAS 300 PATIENT MY SISTER CHILD IS DEAD
The people saying that the food was like Cook county jail's food obviously never been to Cook county. It's like they say it only works if you work it this place takes a lot of people that don't have insurance therefore… they probably don't make a lot of money but overall the people care they care enough to take care of people that can't take care of themselves and can't afford it either. It's truly disturbing that a lot of people gave a one-star rating just because of food. This place saved my life, I was on Mater Hall with my child. I loved Mater Hall and most of the counselors, and caseworkers.. Ms Pink and Ms Jones were just case workers and I felt I got more advice and help from them, Emily was also extremely helpful and supportive. I recommend this place fully!! The focus is getting clean not being pampered like your on vacation !!!
Shout out to Ms. Jones and Ms. D aka Ms. PINK 🩷 Ms. Jebriyah Ms. Daryce and Ms. Michelle of mater hall, they make staying worth it with their down to earthness and constant support. They really understand us women and… what we go thru. I won't say the same for the supervisor Emily who literally runs a maternity ward and will deny you your cravings no matter how reasonable it is. She made it feel like a prison with your special commissary and be thankful you even eat attitude. Pregnant woman should be allowed SWEETS AND ICE CREAM especially if those items can be purchased downstairs in the pharmacy. My time at Haymarket flew by and I was able to complete 22 days successfully and get my first ever certification of completion 🤗 and have been able to stay sober since I've been home. Going back to the staff above I constantly remember things they said that stuck with me and all the support they gave just by being real. Haymarket food isn't the best consider it county food but they did end up hooking a girl up due to health issues (shout out to Danielle &Wanda) also their doula program is AMAZING the doulas they have are the absolute best (Alexis and Crystal!) they also have powerful testimonies and really care about you as a person and a mother. The counselors and caseworkers they have also help manage your case (shout out Ms Lisa!) Once again I'm greatful to this place for employing staff who have powerful testimony and can actually relate to where you are in your recovery journey. All jokes aside they should have a security officer on the floor at all times it was a little intense with all the fighting 🫣 Thank you to the staff at Haymarket for everything and for my floor mates for making the time go by fast and for the life long friendships made!
I was on the TTR UNIT last winter around November December ish and I was given a lay in by the nurse which was unsolicited but appreciated. About 10 min into this unsolicited lay in an employee by the name of Melvin… decided to do a room check and saw me resting in bed and proceeded to verbally assault me and tell me to get out of the bed and go to group. I attempted to inform the unprofessional staff,(Melvin) that I was given a lay in by the nurse and instead of handling the situation professionally with both concern and tact, Melvin proceeded to get the unit supervisor Chris. Now I have 2 staff members verbally assulting me as if they were "ganging up on me." Now this was very early in my recovery attempt so I opted to leave the facility seeing how unprofessional this simple situation was handled. All they had to do was speak with the nurse and they would have found out that I was given a lay in by their co-worker nurse Sandra... Absolute sweetheart BTW. Beware of the unprofessionalism at this facility... Thank God I found other arrangements to start my recovery journey.
Very disappointing! This place use to be pretty good if you weren’t white but now it’s like they don’t care anymore. I took my girlfriend who was near death due to alcohol abuse to this place three times and every time… she was met with little to no help. They left her alone in detox for three days with no encouragement to stay there to get help. They didn’t explain that there was a whole other facility in that building that was dedicated to providing treatment and my girlfriend was made to believe that the whole 28 day program would be inside of the detox department. Therefore, all three times that I went through hell just to convince her to go there was nothing but a complete failure and now this is the way she believes all treatment facilities operate and now she won’t go anywhere. My girlfriend is 29 years old, beautiful and now back at home drinking a gallon of vodka everyday so she’ll probably be dead before she turns 30. Thanks for all your help Haymarket.
I came here recommended by another addiction center due to me not having insurance. The counselors are pretty awesome had no issues with them friendly people. But honestly it feels like your in prison one 10min call a… day food is served in a prison manner food is not great portions are small. Lots of cursing and violence. You are escorted and treated like your literally in prison. Small bed thin blanket small airless pillow . Instead of me feeling welcomed and comfortable I felt depressed and anxious.
If you're not black you will be treated like crap. Food is disgusting. One of the babysitters was literally nodding out at the desk while she was collecting our drops. Had to wake her up. All of my clothes were stolen.… Don't go her! Go to Gateway and Ignatia House.
Called them twice to get information for my mother and twice I got the phone hung up in my face without a hello! This is very unprofessional. I'm going to report this as I am tired of businesses getting away with being… unprofessional.
Excellent Patient Care and Concern
Trash establishment. Do not come here
Changed my life and treated me like family and i am in forever debt to them and I will always have love for Haymarket as a C.I.P representer!!!
I was released 5 days ago. I thank Haymarket staff in Mater Hall for everything, as well as the few counselors in TWL who got me to stay when I was in denial of my substance abuse issue still. My case… manager(Ms.British) and all the counselors of Mater hall made me comfortable, and really helped me turn my life around. I needed the structure and support. Major stuff like getting my legal identification all sorted to basic stuff like just my getting my confidence back was all done here. Ive never felt more capable of staying away from drugs and alcohol as I do now, as well as ready to go forward with IOP & NA/AA groups. &The food was not as bad as everyone makes it seem in the comments, Thanks to Lorenzo &his staff I was fed 3 meals a day. &Fed is best. Thank you Haymarket. I hope to continue my recovery path and use everything you guys have taught me for me and my family.
If you really ready to change your life you definitely have to come here I really appreciate everything you guys helped me with Im back to life again specially the MRR program thank you for all the staff in this unit… they are great hard working people thank you so much ❤️🙏
The staff a middle aged woman was rude, rude, rude I was checking into detox and she made my short stay there HELL ,like talk down as if she were above me,her rudeness was uncalled for and unprofessional as if she was… better than ones self bc she wasn't a drug addict and she called the shots so me n another female had to be medically cleared we both was going to rush so she called her an Uber an was going to make me walk until I made a fuss,
Been through the program on 2 different occasions this year One time in April the counselors and medical staff are great the classes and curriculum is good I learned a lot The one problem is THIS LUNCH LADY NAMED… “WANDA”. A OLD LADY THAT IS COMPLETELY RUDE ANS DISRESPECTFUL. I was in treatment this pass nov and I just left the program because of her. And haymarket seems to not do anything about her… and she still is working there .. she needs to be fired.
If my counselor wasn't so nice I would have left the same day.
There is no reason to waste time complaining to google reviews. I reported this hole to the Illinois Department of Human Relations for the horrid treatment I experienced at Haymarket. I self checked in for treatment. My… insurance covered the cost. I never heard of anyone using their insurance to check into prison. Wait! Prisoners get better treatment than this place. Also, the nasty, mystery food served is Aramark. They are contracted with cook county jail. I did not deserve this! I wanted help with substance. I did not want street people fighting and men who called themselves woman who resided in my unit touching me inappropriately. I had to sleep with the lights on. I got injured when two women got into a fight next to me. The staff had no education and talked down at me or at me. They were from the street too. I am so embarrassed to say I stayed at Haymarket!
Final edit. I'm putting the lessons I learned for any clients who receive similar treatment to my brother. You have rights and Haymarket won't tell you about them. But you matter and deserve to get the treatment they… claim to offer in their marketing materials. Don't ever give up 🙏 1) if you enter Haymarket, the first thing you need to do is ask for the Release of Information form (they call it ROI) and have somebody you trust authorized to receive info about your care. You have a federal right to demand this. They will tell you HIPAA won't allow this, or that you have to have your trusted person fax it to a number that is off the hook and can't receive a fax. That's why it must be done at the time of admission. They know their clients don't have the bandwidth to call them out when they violate rights, and they don't want you to have somebody else who can on the outside. 2) if you are on medicaid and you are compliant with the program, they cannot ever tell you that "your insurance stopped paying". That's a lie, medicaid in Illinois does not cut you off after a certain number of days if you are assessed and have a need to stay. State law and federal parity law forbids this. They may need to request re authorization from medicaid, that happens at about 21 days in. They seem to rarely do this, since it's easier to lie. But they are trying to trick you into self discharge. This is a violation of your patient rights to informed consent. 3) If medicaid says no to reauthorization of continued inpatient treatment, you have the right to appeal with your medicaid provider and the state of Illinois. That's two separate appeals. They are supposed to inform you of your appeal rights in writing when they discharge you, but they don't. So I am informing you. 4) Their goal appears to be to get clients with opioid use disorder on methadone so they can discharge early and shop you out to an affiliate provider, to get those sweet recurring, low effort reimbursements to medicaid. You don't have to go that route if you don't want to and they can't discharge you for that. You are entitled to whatever treatment they are offering, not just MAT. Their desire to cycle new patients as rapidly as possible is to maximize medicaid reimbursement, and they cannot make clinical decisions for you based on these external funding factors. It's unethical and illegal. 5) The vp of operations replies to reviews here, he drops a phone number with an extension that goes nowhere. Just Google "VP of Operations Haymarket Center" and his email will pop somewhere in the results. That's how I finally got a hold of him. Summary of what they did to my brother is they had authorized inpatient treatment with medicaid until Sept 10. They told him the powers that be said he had to go on Sept 5. He was going to be homeless. He asked if there was any way he could stay and they changed their story and said "insurance won't pay past the 5th". This is a lie I confirmed w/ medicaid. I got involved, and VP of operations strung me along with fake phone numbers and a need to fill out a ROI form for a week, which could only be faxed to a non functional fax number before they would do anything to fix this. All i wanted was for them to help my brother as they seemed to acknowledge a mistake had been made. But they did nothing. My husband finally found a bed at sober living house we really can't afford after calling 2 people he knew from uptown in the 90s. So they are doing less than that. Haymarket promises that anybody can fully pursue all the various programs and resources they offer, regardless of the ability to pay. That's not true for anything besides their outpatient methadone provider services. They will lie to boot you from residential treatment at about 21 days. I'll be praying for Father Mac's soul tonight, I imagine he's rolling in the grave at what these freaks have done to his life's work.
Horrible place! The food is like slop. They do not give you your medication even if it’s approved by your doctor. I have horrible anxiety and they wouldn’t give me my medication. They said if I stayed the first night I… got there, they would have to destroy it. So I told them to discharge me right away and they gave me a hard time about it. I was also the only one in the detox unit. You wonder why no one wants to be there? Terrible place! Probably worse than prison!
