Medicare PHP Coverage

The most intensive care Medicare covers without an overnight admission is partial hospitalization: structured days, psychiatric oversight, daily group work, then home each evening. Programs listed here record day treatment together with Medicare acceptance, hospital-based departments and freestanding sites alike.

Hospital outpatient departments and community behavioral health organizations both deliver this, and your share of the cost can differ depending on which one bills the claim. Ask how many hours a day runs and how discharge gets planned. Compare a few before deciding.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicare cover partial hospitalization?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers partial hospitalization when it is furnished by a hospital outpatient department or a Medicare-certified community mental health center and you meet the requirements, including a physician certification that you would otherwise need inpatient psychiatric care.

Coverage applies only when the qualified mental health professional and the program both accept assignment.

Medicare Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/medicare/
How many hours a week is Medicare PHP?

At least 20 hours a week of therapeutic services. A physician must certify that need, and the plan of care has to show it. Medicare describes a partial hospitalization day as usually running 4 to 8 hours, so the week is typically spread across several full days.

The 2026 payment rule also pays partial hospitalization per diem based on a minimum of 20 hours of services per week.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)https://rehabseekers.com/programs/outpatient/php/
How many days a week is a Medicare PHP?

Medicare sets weekly hours rather than a national minimum number of days. One Medicare contractor policy states that attending four days a week, totaling 20 hours of program services in the plan of care, is the minimum level of active treatment considered reasonable and necessary.

Because that figure comes from a regional contractor policy rather than national rules, ask the program how its week is scheduled.

Medicare’s partial hospitalization benefit, written as PHP on most intake forms, buys a day of structured treatment that a member goes home from each evening. The weekly floor is 20 therapeutic hours. Part B funds it, and only inside a hospital outpatient department or a community mental health center certified by Medicare. The manual’s own comparison is to a highly structured, short-term hospital inpatient program.

What marks this benefit off from every lighter outpatient level is a single written finding. On admission a physician has to record that, absent partial hospitalization, the member would need inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Hours alone will not carry a claim: that finding is what makes a day program a Medicare PHP, and it has to be restated each time the stay is recertified.

What follows sets out the eligibility tests Medicare applies, the contents and the exclusions of a covered day, the 20-hour threshold and the attendance pattern underneath it, where PHP parts company with intensive outpatient treatment, the recertification clock, the two charges a member faces in 2026, how the program itself gets paid, how an advantage plan gates the benefit, and how to locate a certified program.
