Methadone Medication Clinics

Methadone is a full opioid agonist dispensed through federally certified opioid treatment programs, not written as an ordinary prescription. Dosing starts daily and on site. Over time, and with stability, take-home doses can be earned, reducing the number of trips considerably.

Practical details decide whether this works for someone: dosing window hours, weekend opening, distance from home or work, and how quickly take-homes become possible. Policies differ between programs even in the same city. Listings show locations and payment types, so compare before calling.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is a methadone clinic?

A methadone clinic is formally called an opioid treatment program, or OTP: a program that treats opioid use disorder with medication and is registered under federal controlled substances law to dispense it. Methadone for opioid use disorder can only be dispensed through a program certified by SAMHSA.

Federal rules limit these programs to FDA-approved opioid use disorder medications, meaning methadone, buprenorphine and buprenorphine combination products, and naltrexone.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)https://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/
What happens at a methadone clinic?

Admission begins with a screening examination and informed consent, then dosing on site, usually daily or almost daily at first. A full physical examination follows within 14 calendar days, along with an individualized care plan, counseling matched to that plan, and at least eight random drug tests a year.

The care plan covers goals, harm reduction steps, education and employment aims, and medical, housing and legal needs, and is updated as circumstances change.

Outpatient MAT Clinichttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/outpatient/mat/
What happens on the first day at a methadone clinic?

A licensed physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner performs a screening examination to confirm admission criteria and rule out contraindications, and informed consent is taken. The first methadone dose is then given under direct supervision on site once a practitioner orders it.

The practitioner also explains how the dose will be raised over time, safe transport and storage of any take-home doses, and keeping naloxone on hand.

A methadone clinic is an opioid treatment program, or OTP: a program certified by the federal government, accredited by an approved body, licensed by its state and registered with the DEA to dispense medication for opioid use disorder. Methadone for opioid use disorder can only be dispensed through a certified OTP, which is why this one kind of clinic exists at all.

That certification shapes the daily reality of treatment. Dosing happens on site at first, usually every day or close to it, and the medication is handed over rather than written as an ordinary prescription. Federal rules rewritten in February 2024 loosened much of what surrounds that, including take-home doses, counseling requirements and who may order the medication.

This guide covers what an OTP is, what admission and a typical week involve, how long treatment runs, what it costs and who pays, how take-home doses are decided, and how to check that a program is certified before the first visit.
