Methadone Maintenance Programs

Maintenance dosing keeps methadone at a steady level that holds withdrawal and craving at bay without sedation. Finding that level takes weeks of careful adjustment, and many people stay on it for years, which the evidence supports as a reasonable course.

Take-home policy is where programs differ most, and it shapes daily life more than anything else about the treatment. Ask what the schedule looks like after six months, and how a transfer would work if you moved. Compare the programs listed here and contact them directly.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

What is methadone maintenance?

Methadone maintenance is long-term treatment of opioid use disorder with a daily oral dose of methadone dispensed by a federally certified opioid treatment program. The medication label covers both detoxification and maintenance treatment, and maintenance holds a steady dose that keeps withdrawal and craving down without sedation.

Finding that steady level takes weeks of adjustment, and dosing is paired with medical, behavioral health and recovery support services under an agreed care plan.

Methadone Medication Clinichttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/methadone/
How long can you stay on methadone maintenance?

There is no required limit. The ASAM 2020 national practice guideline recommends no time limit on treatment with methadone or buprenorphine, and SAMHSA's 2024 Federal Guidelines state there should be no limits on a patient's duration of treatment or dosage level.

TIP 63 says someone should continue methadone as long as they benefit from it, want to stay on it, and develop no contraindications.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)https://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/
How long does methadone maintenance treatment last?

Treatment length varies by individual. SAMHSA cites NIDA's principles giving a minimum of 12 months and notes that some patients need long-term maintenance lasting years. TIP 63 calls arbitrary time limits on methadone treatment medically unwarranted and inappropriate.

Any decision to reduce the dose is made jointly with the program, since stopping is tapered slowly rather than ended on a date.

Methadone maintenance is long-term treatment of opioid use disorder with a daily dose of methadone dispensed by a certified opioid treatment program. The aim is a steady dose that holds withdrawal and craving down without sedation, kept in place for as long as it is useful rather than worked downward on a schedule.

That is the practical difference between maintenance and a methadone-assisted taper. Maintenance assumes the medication stays. The Diskets label covers both detoxification treatment and maintenance treatment of opioid use disorder, delivered under the federal conditions that govern opioid treatment programs, and the same medication is used either way at a different intent and a different pace.

This guide sets out what maintenance involves day to day, the dosing the label describes, how long treatment continues, the heart and interaction warnings worth knowing, what the weekly fee covers and who pays it, and how to find a certified program in your state.
