TRICARE Rehab Coverage

Under TRICARE, the behavioral health benefit reaches substance use treatment for service members, retirees and their families. Facilities on this page report accepting it across detox, residential care, outpatient programs and medication for opioid use disorder. Plan type shapes how you reach that care.

Prime and Select work differently: Prime routes care through a primary manager and referrals, Select allows more direct access at higher cost share. Regional contractors also differ. Confirm a facility’s network status with your region before admission, and compare what the providers below offer.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does TRICARE cover rehab for drug and alcohol addiction?

Yes. TRICARE covers substance use disorder treatment when it is medically necessary, including hospital stays, detoxification, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, outpatient therapy and medication-based treatment. Aversion therapy and treatments considered unproven are not covered, and some services carry special rules or limits.

Care must come from a TRICARE-authorized provider, and your plan decides whether a referral or pre-authorization is needed first.

TRICARE Outpatient Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/tricare-outpatient-rehab/
What levels of rehab does TRICARE cover?

Covered levels run from inpatient services and detoxification through partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs and regular outpatient therapy, plus opioid treatment programs and office-based opioid treatment. Admission to a substance use disorder rehabilitation facility is also covered for all ages when medically necessary.

TriWest describes that residential level as ASAM 3.5 or 3.7, partial hospitalization as ASAM 2.5 and intensive outpatient as ASAM 2.1.

TRICARE Inpatient Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/tricare-inpatient-rehab/
Does TRICARE cover residential rehab?

Yes, for substance use disorder when medically necessary. Residential care for adults, including active duty service members, is a covered benefit only for substance use treatment, delivered through an authorized substance use disorder rehabilitation facility. Mental health residential treatment center admissions are covered only for children and adolescents under 21.

TriWest requires prior authorization for every substance use rehabilitation facility admission, with an initial three days and continued stays approved up to 30 days at a time.

TRICARE is the Department of Defense health program for service members, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members and their families, and TRICARE rehab means substance use treatment paid for under its plans. The benefit belongs to the Defense Health Agency, which lists substance use disorder treatment as a covered service: withdrawal management, inpatient care, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, opioid treatment programs, office-based opioid treatment and outpatient therapy, each where it is medically necessary.

What changes from one household to the next is not the list of covered services but the paperwork and the price. The same benefit sits behind every plan; the plan decides whether a referral is needed, the region decides who approves it, and the sponsor’s status and enrollment group decide the cost share. Eligibility is set by the sponsor’s uniformed service and reported in DEERS rather than by TRICARE itself.

This guide covers what TRICARE pays for at each level of care, which admissions need pre-authorization and which do not, how long an authorization runs, what a member pays under Prime, Select, Reserve Select and TRICARE For Life in 2026, what to do when a request is denied, and how to find a program that holds TRICARE authorization.
