TRICARE MAT Coverage

TRICARE covers medication for opioid use disorder, though the route to it differs between plan types. Providers here accept the benefit and offer at least one of buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone, prescribed alongside the counseling that the evidence pairs with it.

Where you get medication shapes the routine. Opioid treatment programs dispense methadone on site under federal certification, often daily at first; office-based prescribers write buprenorphine you collect from a pharmacy. Listings show which medications each provider offers, so compare that against your schedule.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does TRICARE cover medication assisted treatment?

Yes. TRICARE covers medication assisted treatment, which it describes as combining drug and mental health therapies for a substance use disorder. Coverage runs through two settings: opioid treatment programs and office-based opioid treatment. Care must be medically necessary, and TRICARE does not pay for aversion therapy or unproven treatments.

TriWest adds that in the West Region medication assisted treatment is covered from both institutional and individual professional providers when medically necessary.

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)https://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/
What medications treat opioid use disorder?

Three medications are approved by the FDA for opioid use disorder: buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone. Approved products include buprenorphine and naloxone sublingual or buccal tablets and film, and Methadose methadone oral concentrate and tablets for oral suspension. Each works differently and suits a different point in treatment.

Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist with weaker effects than full agonists such as methadone, which is a Schedule II long-acting full agonist taken daily.

Suboxone and Buprenorphinehttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/buprenorphine/
Does TRICARE cover methadone?

Yes, at a certified opioid treatment program. Methadone for a confirmed opioid use disorder can only be dispensed through a SAMHSA-certified opioid treatment program, and TRICARE covers that program for opioid use disorder when medically necessary, including withdrawal management and supervised withdrawal from maintenance medication.

SAMHSA's Opioid Treatment Program Directory at dpt2.samhsa.gov/treatment lists certified programs by state.

TRICARE MAT is TRICARE’s coverage of medication assisted treatment for substance use disorders, which TRICARE describes as combining drug and mental health therapies. The medications in question are buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone, the three the FDA has approved for opioid use disorder, and the benefit reaches them through two clinical settings and one pharmacy counter.

Those two settings are the distinction that governs this page. TRICARE covers medication assisted treatment in an opioid treatment program and in office-based opioid treatment, and nowhere else as a standalone benefit; medication given inside a residential or hospital stay is paid for as part of that stay instead. The third route is the pharmacy benefit, where a tablet or film is filled at a military, retail network or home delivery pharmacy, and where the copay and any prior authorization follow the TRICARE Formulary rather than the medical benefit.

This guide covers which medications TRICARE pays for and in which setting, how the authorization rules differ between what TRICARE publishes and what the West Region contractor requires, how each medication is started and how long treatment runs, what the 2026 pharmacy copays come to, what to do with a denied drug, and how to reach an opioid treatment program or prescriber that holds TRICARE authorization.
