TRICARE Suboxone Coverage

Buprenorphine, sold as Suboxone when combined with naloxone, treats opioid use disorder by easing withdrawal and blunting cravings without the high of a full agonist. Prescribers listed here accept TRICARE. Most pair the prescription with counseling, and you collect medication from a pharmacy.

Practices differ on induction, visit frequency, drug testing policy and how long they will continue prescribing. Some require group attendance, some do not. Ask about all of that at the first call, along with pharmacy coverage under your plan, then compare the prescribers listed here.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does TRICARE cover Suboxone?

Yes. TRICARE covers medication assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, combining medication with mental health therapy, in opioid treatment programs and office-based opioid treatment settings. The buprenorphine-naloxone prescription itself runs through the TRICARE Pharmacy Program, whose contractor is Express Scripts, with formulary and copay rules applied there.

Coverage follows the general rule that a service must be medically necessary and considered proven. Aversion therapy and unproven substance use disorder treatments are not paid for.

TRICARE MAThttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/tricare-mat/
How much is a Suboxone copay on TRICARE?

For most beneficiaries, the 2026 and 2027 retail network pharmacy copays are $16 for a generic, $48 for a brand-name formulary drug and $85 for a non-formulary drug, covering up to a 30-day supply. Which figure applies depends on whether the prescription is filled as generic buprenorphine-naloxone or brand Suboxone.

Military pharmacies charge nothing for generic and brand-name formulary drugs for up to a 90-day supply.

Suboxonehttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/buprenorphine/suboxone/
Do active duty service members pay for Suboxone?

No. Active duty service members pay nothing for covered drugs in 2026 and 2027, whether filled at a military pharmacy, through home delivery or at a retail network pharmacy. Active duty family members enrolled in TRICARE Prime Remote in the United States also pay nothing at those same three pharmacy options.

Medically retired sponsors, their families and survivors of active duty members have frozen copays of $10 generic and $24 brand formulary at retail.

Suboxone is a brand of sublingual film and tablet combining buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, with naloxone, and it is used to treat opioid use disorder as part of a plan that includes counseling and psychosocial support. Under TRICARE it reaches a member through two separate benefits at once: the medical benefit pays for the visits and the program, and the pharmacy benefit pays for the medication itself.

That split is the distinction this page turns on. TRICARE uses two different words for two different approvals. Pre-authorization is how care is approved, and TRICARE states that stateside medication treatment needs none. Prior authorization is how a drug is approved, decided by the pharmacy contractor against the formulary. A member can be cleared for treatment and still be waiting on the prescription, which is why the two processes are worth keeping apart.

This guide covers which settings TRICARE pays for, how the pharmacy benefit and its formulary categories work, when a prior authorization is needed and how long it takes, what a fill costs at each pharmacy type in 2026, what the label says about dose, starting and dental care, how to appeal a refusal, and how to find a prescriber.
