TRICARE Detox Coverage

The first stretch off alcohol or opioids is the part that carries medical risk, and detox exists to cover it. Staff monitor symptoms, use medication where it helps, and watch for complications. Providers on this page report withdrawal management services and accept TRICARE.

Detox is a start, not a treatment plan on its own, and what follows it decides a great deal. Ask whether a program admits directly into residential or outpatient care afterward, and how quickly. Listings show the levels each provider carries; compare, then call to check availability.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does TRICARE cover detox?

Yes. TRICARE covers detoxification, which it describes as management of withdrawal symptoms, in hospital stays, intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment programs. Coverage applies when the care is medically necessary and delivered by a TRICARE-authorized provider. Aversion therapy and unproven treatments are not covered.

Detoxification sits alongside inpatient services, partial hospitalization, outpatient therapy and medication assisted treatment in the substance use disorder benefit.

TRICARE Rehabhttps://rehabseekers.com/insurance-accepted/tricare/
Does TRICARE require prior authorization for detox?

It depends on how the admission happens. Planned, non-crisis hospital care for substance use disorders needs pre-authorization from your regional contractor first. Emergency hospital care during a crisis needs no pre-authorization and is covered at the closest hospital, though care continuing after the crisis ends does need approval.

Providers who bill without a required prior authorization face a 10 percent payment reduction that cannot be passed on to you.

Medical Detoxhttps://rehabseekers.com/programs/detox-centers/medical-detox/
How soon must a facility notify TRICARE of an emergency detox admission?

Under TriWest's West Region guidance, a facility should notify the contractor within 24 hours of an emergency psychiatric or substance detoxification admission, and no later than 72 hours. The admission itself needs no prior authorization, but that notice is what keeps the stay on track for payment.

Ask at intake who is making the call, since the facility handles notification rather than the member or family.

TRICARE detox is medically supervised withdrawal management for substance use, paid for through the Department of Defense health care program that covers service members, retirees and their families. The Defense Health Agency manages the benefit, and two regional contractors run it day to day: Humana Military in the East Region and TriWest Healthcare Alliance in the West Region, which took over on January 1, 2025. Withdrawal care sits inside the wider TRICARE rehab benefit alongside hospital stays, outpatient programs and medication-based treatment.

What sets withdrawal care apart from the rest of that benefit is how approval works, and that turns on whether the admission is an emergency. TRICARE says emergency hospital care in a crisis needs no pre-authorization and is covered at the closest hospital, while planned, non-crisis hospital care for a substance use disorder has to be authorized before it starts. Care after the crisis ends also needs approval, so the opening hours of a detox admission are handled on a different footing from the days that follow.

This guide covers which withdrawal settings TRICARE pays for, the ASAM level labels the contractors use, how pre-authorization and the emergency notification window differ between the East and West Regions, what a member pays in 2026 under Prime, Select, the premium-based plans and TRICARE For Life, what an authorized program may bill, what usually follows a withdrawal stay, and how to locate care that takes the benefit.
