Suboxone Rehab That Takes Medicaid

Buprenorphine combined with naloxone is what the Suboxone brand describes, taken as a film or tablet under the tongue and collected from a pharmacy. Prescribers listed here record it in their federal entry and accept Medicaid, though preferred formulations differ from one state plan to another.

Pharmacy access is worth checking alongside the prescriber. A plan may cover the medication while a local pharmacy keeps little stock, which turns into a wasted trip. Ask a program how it handles that, and what happens if a dose needs adjusting. Compare options here.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicaid cover Suboxone?

Yes. Federal law requires every state Medicaid plan to cover medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine products such as Suboxone. A 2023 SAMHSA review found buprenorphine/naloxone covered in 50 of 53 fee-for-service programs and in all 40 managed care programs reviewed.

What varies is which product sits on the state preferred drug list and whether a prior authorization, dose cap or quantity limit applies to that form.

Is the Medicaid requirement to cover Suboxone permanent?

Yes. The Congressional Research Service says section 201 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 removed the September 30, 2025 expiration date, making the Medicaid requirement to cover all forms of medication-assisted treatment drugs permanent. The original mandate came from section 1006(b) of the SUPPORT Act, signed October 24, 2018.

CMS reads the benefit as including every FDA-approved form of the covered drugs, naming buprenorphine alongside methadone and naltrexone.

Does Medicaid require prior authorization for Suboxone?

Usually not for a standard generic. KFF found that as of state fiscal year 2024, 46 states including D.C. covered at least one standard oral buprenorphine product without prior authorization under fee-for-service Medicaid. Approval is still commonly required for brand products, buprenorphine alone, or doses above 16 or 24 mg.

A 2023 study found 94.9% of Medicaid formularies had at least one immediate-release buprenorphine product without prior authorization in 2021, up from 80.6% in 2017.

Suboxone rehab that takes Medicaid means a clinic or program that prescribes buprenorphine with naloxone and bills a state Medicaid plan for the visits, with the medication itself paid through the state’s pharmacy benefit. Suboxone is the brand name of Indivior’s buprenorphine and naloxone sublingual film, and state Medicaid lists treat that brand separately from the generic film and tablets.

Coverage is not in question. Federal law requires every state Medicaid plan to cover medication for opioid use disorder, and buprenorphine products sit inside that requirement. What varies from one state to the next, and from one managed care plan to the next, is which product is preferred, whether the brand film needs prior authorization, how many films a day are allowed, and whether the start of treatment can happen by video.

This guide covers what the federal rule obliges states to pay for, how a Medicaid Suboxone visit and prescription actually work, how long treatment runs, what the member pays, how preferred drug lists and dose caps are written in the states where the rules were read, and how to find a prescriber who takes Medicaid.
