Treatment Centers in Michigan That Accept Aetna

Aetna employer health plans pay for drug and alcohol rehab in Michigan under Aetna’s own precertification rules, and Aetna Better Health of Michigan is a Medicaid Health Plan serving nineteen southern counties. For Aetna Better Health members, substance use treatment is authorized and paid by a regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan rather than by Aetna.

Michigan programs below come from state licensing records and government treatment registers, in places from Detroit and its Oakland and Macomb suburbs to Lansing, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. Every listing names its levels of care and the program’s own number, and filtering by town, service or substance shortens the list.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Does Aetna Cover Rehab in Michigan?

Yes. Aetna covers drug and alcohol rehab in Michigan through two routes, and the card decides which applies. Employer plans cover substance use treatment under Aetna’s own rules, while for Aetna Better Health of Michigan members the regional PIHP pays. Rehabs that take Aetna appear among the Michigan treatment centers on this page.

Aetna Better Health of Michigan is one of nine Medicaid Health Plans under contract with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and it kept that contract in the 2024 rebid. It enrolls Medicaid, Healthy Michigan Plan and MIChild members in nineteen counties, from Berrien and Cass on the Indiana line to Wayne, Oakland and Macomb.

Who manages Aetna behavioral health in Michigan?

Aetna manages behavioral health itself for its employer plans, using its own national precertification list and utilization review; no outside vendor is named for commercial plans. Aetna Better Health of Michigan covers outpatient mental health visits, but the state carves substance use treatment out to ten regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans that work with county Community Mental Health Services Programs.

Does Aetna Cover Inpatient Rehab in Michigan?

Yes, on Aetna plans that include residential care. On Aetna’s behavioral health list, a residential treatment center or substance use disorder facility counts as an inpatient confinement, a coverable level of care, so residential rehab taking insurance is open to employer members. Aetna Better Health members reach Medicaid residential programs through the PIHP under Michigan’s Section 1115 waiver.

Does Aetna need prior authorization for inpatient rehab in Michigan?

Yes. Aetna’s national behavioral health list, effective August 1, 2024, requires precertification for inpatient, residential and partial hospitalization stays on its commercial plans, and with an out-of-network provider the member must arrange it. Aetna Better Health of Michigan members get authorization from the PIHP for their county instead, using the ASAM Continuum assessment.

How long will Aetna pay for residential rehab in Michigan?

Aetna decides the length of an employer-plan stay through precertification and medical necessity review, using the third edition of the ASAM Criteria backed by Aetna’s own Clinical Policy Bulletins and MCG. For Aetna Better Health members, the PIHP authorizes the stay, and Michigan’s Behavioral Health Demonstration aims for residential stays averaging 30 days statewide.

Does Aetna Cover Detox in Michigan?

Yes. Aetna’s sample employer document, a 2026 Choice POS II booklet, pays for outpatient detox with medication, and under Aetna’s national list an inpatient stay needs precertification. Aetna Better Health members get medical detox programs from the PIHP at levels 1-WM through 3.7-WM, while hospital detox at level 4-WM is handled on the physical health side, through the health plan.

Does Aetna Cover Outpatient Rehab in Michigan?

Yes. That same 2026 Choice POS II document covers office counseling, partial hospitalization and IOP programs that take insurance, and Aetna’s current precertification list leaves out intensive outpatient care. Aetna Better Health of Michigan covers outpatient mental health visits itself, while the PIHP pays for outpatient addiction counseling, peer recovery coaching and intensive outpatient care.

Does Aetna Cover Suboxone, Methadone and Other Addiction Medications?

Yes. CVS Caremark, Aetna’s sister company within CVS Health, runs Aetna’s pharmacy benefits, with tiers set by each plan’s formulary. Aetna Better Health of Michigan follows the common formulary all Michigan Medicaid Health Plans have shared since January 1, 2016, used by MAT clinics that take insurance and Medicaid alike.

Does Aetna cover Suboxone in Michigan?

Yes. Aetna’s commercial plans dropped, under a policy reported in 2017, the prior authorization requirement for Suboxone and other buprenorphine products from March 2017, and Michigan Medicaid removed it for preferred forms on December 2, 2019, relevant to Suboxone prescribers taking insurance. Vivitrol and naltrexone tablets are on that same Michigan preferred list.

Does Aetna cover methadone in Michigan?

Yes, for Aetna Better Health of Michigan members, through the PIHP. Methadone for opioid use disorder reaches these members only at PIHP-contracted methadone maintenance clinics, never through the pharmacy benefit. For employer plans it depends on the plan: Aetna has published no methadone formulary entry, so members ask the plan.

Aetna Rehab Centers on Lake Michigan Beaches, Along the St. Joseph River and by Lake Erie

Aetna Better Health of Michigan covers every county in the state’s southwest corner and its southeastern shoreline, so its footprint takes in Lake Michigan beaches, the St. Joseph River valley and the Lake Erie coast. Employer plans follow Aetna’s network rather than county lines, but Medicaid members’ authorization depends on the PIHP for each county.

Aetna rehab near Lake Michigan beaches

Lake Michigan beach towns in Berrien and Van Buren counties, including Saint Joseph, Benton Harbor and South Haven, fall inside Aetna Better Health’s service area, alongside McLaren, Meridian and UnitedHealthcare. Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health, (800) 676-0423, authorizes Medicaid treatment there, and Benton Harbor recovery programs sit among rehabs near beaches.

Aetna rehab along the St. Joseph River

The St. Joseph River runs through four Aetna Better Health counties: Branch, around Coldwater, then St. Joseph, Cass and Berrien, past Three Rivers and Niles. Each of those counties has the same four Medicaid plans, Aetna Better Health among them, and the same PIHP, so treatment centers near rivers and programs in Niles follow one rule.

Aetna rehab on the Lake Erie shore

Monroe County, on the western end of Lake Erie, is an Aetna Better Health county, with Medicaid substance use care run through the Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan. The partnership’s line is (888) 566-0489, and Monroe treatment options appear with rehabs near the Great Lakes.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Accepts Aetna in Michigan?

Browse the listings on this page. The programs shown accept Aetna, they can be narrowed by town, level of care or substance, and each listing has its own phone number. Employer members can also widen the search to programs taking private insurance, then confirm the program is in their Aetna network.

Admission for Aetna employer members starts with the program calling Aetna for precertification, using the number on the ID card. Aetna Better Health of Michigan members call the PIHP access line for their county, listed below; the plan’s member line is 1-866-316-3784, its crisis line 1-866-827-8704 and its nurse line 1-866-711-6664.

Aetna rehab in Detroit and Wayne County

Wayne County joined the first phase of MI Coordinated Health, for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, on January 1, 2026, and Aetna Better Health of Michigan was among nine plans picked for it in October 2024. Medicaid members’ substance use care in Detroit treatment programs is authorized by the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.

Aetna rehab in Macomb and Oakland counties

Macomb and Oakland are each a separate PIHP region, and Aetna Better Health of Michigan enrolls Medicaid members in both. Macomb County Community Mental Health authorizes care at 1-855-996-2264 and Oakland Community Health Network at (800) 341-2003, and Sterling Heights treatment centers and recovery programs in Troy fall under those two county systems.

Aetna rehab in Lansing and Ingham County

Lansing’s Ingham County has three Medicaid plans in the state’s January 2025 listing, Aetna Better Health of Michigan, HAP CareSource and McLaren, and neighboring Eaton County shows the same three. Mid-State Health Network authorizes treatment at rehab centers in Lansing and East Lansing programs.

Aetna rehab in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County

Washtenaw County Aetna Better Health members use the Community Mental Health Partnership of Southeast Michigan, at (888) 566-0489, the same regional line used in Livingston, Lenawee and Monroe counties. Washtenaw has six Medicaid plans including Aetna Better Health, covering Ann Arbor treatment options and nearby Ypsilanti.

Aetna rehab in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek

Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties share the same four Medicaid plans as the rest of southwest Michigan: Aetna Better Health, McLaren, Meridian and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan. Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health handles authorization, and Kalamazoo addiction treatment and Battle Creek rehab programs are listed here. Grand Rapids, in Kent County, sits outside Aetna Better Health’s area.

Can I use Aetna for rehab in a different state?

Yes, if the Aetna employer plan has out-of-network benefits, as Aetna’s national Choice POS II and Open Choice PPO designs do, at higher cost and with precertification arranged by the member. On Aetna’s HMO and EPO designs, treatment outside the network is paid only in an emergency. Aetna Better Health of Michigan members are tied to Michigan’s PIHP system instead.

How much does rehab cost with Aetna in Michigan?

Rehab costs on an Aetna employer plan depend on that plan’s deductible and coinsurance, and an out-of-network program may balance bill the difference above what Aetna recognizes. Aetna Better Health of Michigan members pay little, because designated mental health programs carry no copay under the state’s table and its materials show no PIHP copay for substance use care.

Aetna members in Michigan who also hold Medicare can compare rehabs that take Medicare. Adults aged 19 to 64 who lose employer coverage may qualify for Medicaid rehab coverage through the Healthy Michigan Plan, at or below 133% of the federal poverty level, and can then choose Aetna Better Health in its nineteen counties.
