Naltrexone Treatment That Takes Medicaid

Naltrexone Treatment That Takes Medicaid

Medicaid covers naltrexone in every state, both as a tablet and as the extended-release injection, though prior authorization rules differ. The programs here record Medicaid as an accepted payment type and prescribe or administer naltrexone as part of their clinical treatment.

State Medicaid plans handle the injection differently: some pay the clinic directly, others route it through a pharmacy benefit that adds a step before dosing. Ask how a program obtains the medication and what your plan requires. Listings show which accept Medicaid.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Does Medicaid cover naltrexone?

Yes. Federal rules require state Medicaid programs to cover medication for opioid use disorder, and CMS names naltrexone alongside methadone and buprenorphine. A 2022 SAMHSA report counted 49 state fee-for-service programs covering the oral tablet and 46 covering the extended-release injection.

Coverage extends to the counseling and behavioral therapy connected with the medication, though each state decides which specific services it includes.

Naltrexone Treatmenthttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/naltrexone/
Does Medicaid cover the Vivitrol shot?

Yes, in nearly every state. SAMHSA's 2022 review counted 46 fee-for-service Medicaid programs and 40 states whose managed care plans cover extended-release injectable naltrexone. New York and Delaware both list Vivitrol on their 2026 drug lists, Delaware as a preferred opioid dependence agent.

The injection is 380 mg every four weeks, so claims are generally monthly and plans review renewals on that cycle.

Vivitrol Shot Rehab That Takes Medicaidhttps://rehabseekers.com/medications/mat/naltrexone/vivitrol-shot-medicaid/
Is Medicaid required to cover naltrexone for opioid use disorder?

Yes. Section 1006(b) of the SUPPORT Act added a mandatory medication-assisted treatment benefit to the Social Security Act, requiring state plans to cover MAT drugs for opioid use disorder plus related counseling and behavioral therapy. CMS reads that to include every FDA-approved formulation of naltrexone.

The benefit covers only formulations the FDA has approved for treating opioid use disorder, not every product containing the drug.

Naltrexone treatment that takes Medicaid means the medication, as a daily tablet or the monthly extended-release injection sold as Vivitrol, paid for by a state Medicaid program rather than out of pocket. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist: it blocks opioid receptors, it is not an opioid, and federal health agencies says it is not addictive and does not cause withdrawal when stopped.

The payment side is unusually settled. Federal law obliges state Medicaid plans to cover medication for opioid use disorder, and CMS reads that duty as covering every approved form of the drug, naming methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone. What varies between states is the paperwork: which product sits on the preferred drug list, whether prior authorization applies, and what the nominal copay is at the pharmacy counter.

This guide covers what the federal benefit requires and what changed in 2024 and 2025, how the tablet and the injection are prescribed and dispensed under Medicaid, how long approvals run, what the medication and the surrounding treatment cost, how four named states handle authorization, and how to find a prescriber who takes your plan.
