Alcohol and PTSD: Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Post-traumatic stress and heavy drinking travel together often enough that many clinicians expect to find both. Alcohol dampens intrusive memories and sleep problems for a while, at the cost of making them worse over time and slowing any recovery from the trauma itself.

This page draws on facilities that record alcohol treatment, co-occurring disorder care and a PTSD client group in their SAMHSA return. Trauma-focused approaches differ: EMDR, cognitive processing therapy and prolonged exposure are not interchangeable. Ask which a provider offers, and by whom. Compare the listings.

Why Trust RehabSeekers.com?

RehabSeekers is an independent behavioral health directory covering drug and alcohol addiction and mental health treatment providers.

Every listing has a source: an official register, a licensing record, or details the facility sent us.

Credentials shown honestly. Accreditation, licensing and registration listed separately.

Reviews shown exactly as written. Never edited, never removed because a facility asked.

No commission, no referral fees. Nothing a facility pays for changes where it appears.

Contact details always go direct. Calls reach the facility itself, never a call centre.

Common questions

Answered from what is listed here.

Can PTSD and alcohol use disorder be treated at the same time?

Yes. The two conditions are routinely treated together, either as two therapies running concurrently with different therapists, or as one integrated therapy delivered by the same therapist. VA/DoD guidance states that both should be offered evidence-based treatment, and that having one condition should never block treatment for the other.

There is no single level of care suited to everyone with both conditions, so the plan is set through shared decision-making with repeated measurement of symptoms.

Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatmenthttps://rehabseekers.com/dual-diagnosis/integrated-dual-diagnosis/
How common is PTSD among individuals with alcohol use disorder?

About 15 to 30% of individuals with alcohol use disorder also have post-traumatic stress disorder, according to NIAAA, rising to 50 to 60% among military personnel and veterans. Looked at the other way, VA reports that 45% of US adults with PTSD also have problems with drug or alcohol use.

A large national epidemiologic study cited by VA found 44.6% of those with lifetime PTSD also met criteria for an alcohol or other substance use disorder.

Co-Occurring Disorder Treatmenthttps://rehabseekers.com/dual-diagnosis/co-occurring-disorders/
Does alcohol make PTSD worse?

Yes. VA states that drinking can worsen PTSD symptoms, giving the example of alcohol used as a sleep aid making sleep less restful. NIAAA describes the two conditions as capable of worsening each other, with alcohol use disorder disrupting arousal, sleep and thinking, which weakens coping with trauma symptoms.

Drinking also impairs judgment and raises exposure to accidents, injury and assault, events that can themselves lead to post-traumatic stress.

Alcohol and PTSD is the co-occurrence of alcohol use disorder with post-traumatic stress disorder, a diagnosis given when symptoms from a traumatic event persist for an extended period and interfere with daily life such as work or relationships. About 15% to 30% of individuals with alcohol use disorder also have PTSD, and that figure rises to 50% to 60% among military personnel and veterans, which is part of why this pairing shows up so often in treatment settings connected to military service.

What sets this page apart from a broader page about trauma history is specificity: PTSD is a diagnosed condition with its own assessment tools and specific trauma-focused psychotherapies that current guidance names as the strongest options, and that guidance states plainly that a substance use disorder should not block access to those therapies, nor should PTSD block access to alcohol treatment. For most individuals who have both, research suggests PTSD develops first.

This page covers what the pairing is and who it affects, what a course of treatment usually involves, how providers are credentialed, which levels of care offer it, what it costs and how payment works, questions worth asking an admissions team, and how to find a program built to treat both conditions together.
