How Much Does Treatment at Carseview Centre Cost?

Carseview Centre is a general acute psychiatric unit rather than a dedicated addiction residential programme, so the Dundee-area market figures for addiction treatment (privately, residential care often runs from around £10,000 to £30,000 a month) are included here as broader context rather than a direct guide to this unit’s own care.

As an NHS Tayside facility, care here may be available at no direct cost to residents through the NHS, subject to referral and residency. If an addiction-related concern is involved, ask how a referral into acute psychiatric care works and whether a separate addiction service would also be involved.

Carseview Centre Reviews

Patients and family members who have experience of an admission to Carseview Centre are welcome to share a review to help others understand what to expect from a stay there.

As an NHS unit, Carseview operates under NHS Tayside’s own governance and is subject to inspection by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. A helpful question for anyone considering a referral is how the acute admission and assessment process works, and what follow-up support is arranged once someone is discharged.

Staff here are incredibly selfless and caring from what I saw while in here on Mulberry ward. Ultimately staff are doing their best with the tools they’ve been given. My advice for anybody detained would be to cooperate… and remain calm and collected whilst they assess you.

Fantastic nurses. Great at inspiring people to be nothing like them. If you're depressed or suicidal, it makes you realise that those negative thoughts about yourself probably aren't true. Nurses have been seen mocking… disabled patients, dementia patients and such. Catty, poor care plans, usually no execution of said care plans and no support for patients. Left vulnerable patients open to abuse from unsupervised "unwell" patients. No plans to protect vulnerable patients. No empathy or interest in treating patients. Poor professionalism and highly emotional and reactive to patients in need. Would provoke "unwell" patients until they were combative and forced to receive sedative injections, all while blaming the patient for said reaction despite initiating arguments and escalating them— then sending them off to PRI for likely the same awful treatment. Insufficient room checks for sharps etc. Insufficient monitoring of craft supplies in relation to this. Broken people working in a broken hospital. Symptom of a larger issue within NHS Tayside. Many members of staff are unfit to work there. A few others however are incredible and truly one of a kind. 11/2025

Very unique experience. My stay at the carseview Was very interesting. The staff were extremely friendly helpful, however, I do not feel they were Trained adequately to deal with the complex cases that they encounter… every single day. My room was however an adequate I was not given appropriate bedding just a thin blanket in order to keep me warm. My mattress was plastic. The lack of privacy unsurmountable. Staff could walk into my room with no pre-warning. I could be sitting on the toilet and someone could just walk in. It seems that our co-Patients Did a better job at psychological treatments than those employed to provide mental health services within. After-care treatment was nonexistence and I found myself delving into an abyss of ill mental health after my discharge. However lovely and friendly the staff were and however keen they were to support their service users. It was however in adequate due to the lack of training and lack of funding that they have been given. They were overrun overworked, underpaid and unhappy in their jobs yet they still kept assemblance of humanity about them and delivered their services in an Empathic form. But I feel the Council has done both service users and employees a disservice through lack of funding and the neglect of both parties. thank you for the bloke by the way I still have him…

I thought it okay to start with but being in mulberry ward was awfully hard because all you can hear is shouting from other patients shouting and yelling that lead me to start shaking and crying because I was literally… scared for my life the ward staff didn’t even bother to check to see if was okay then later on when the nurses came and give me my medicine but I refused it and nurse were like to me if you don’t take this oral we would have to but a infection into my bum didn’t like hearing that because felt like was getting reminded of it because same thing was happened in pri Perth hospital all was wanting was to go home but even being home honestly still feel traumatised from that experience and the staff were disrespectful towards me it just makes your feel rubbish to a point where did hurt myself in the room on the ward impact me physically and emotionally it’s completely horrible thing to forget about it’s like your being bullied!! since the day I walk in the learning disability assessment ward due to the reason I was from Perth and am desperately trying so hard to get move to muarry royal hospital and this ward is taking mass troll on myself and my dad who is travelling by bus everyday what trying to say is avoid this ward because I have no be treated with any sort of respect with has led to to actually cry ward staff literally don’t ward about you or your mental health as long they are doing their job and going home afterwards being here in carseview gives me anxiety the thought of getting pin down and jag screaming can’t even eat anything anymore I’ve lost weight because of this environment my consultant in out patient bit place me in when don’t believe to have a learning disability i would not be interested or surprised of this hospital gets shut down

I was referred here by my mental health nurse. I spent three weeks in this place in ward 2 and can't recommend it enough. I was given the tools and treatment needed to make sure I no longer caused harm to myself. I was… given a diagnosis I had been trying to find for years and met some very friendly people in the process of my time there. Carsview ward 2 is where you want to be when in crisis. I don't want to say I'd come back because I feel they've recharged me, but if I were ever in crisis, I'd fight to come back to ward 2 knowing I'd be in the proper care of all the staff. Thank you to the nurses and nurses assistance for putting up with me for so long. Kind rgards, Jasper.

Shocking place. Left me in a really bad state said I was fine to go home and left me to get on with what I told them I was going to do. Treat people like dirt and like they are just in the job for money none of them… actually care and just get the satisfaction of making someone angry or making them worse and push them over to kill themselves.

Horrible place avoid at all costs will literally destroy you mental health even worse , I came in from pri for a mental health assessment with the crisis team, lady called carol was so horrible to me sat there and… laughed at me talking about my pain , I asked to be referred to the eating disorder team and she looked me up and down and said there’s no way they will accept you because you don’t “ look” underweight . She then asked if I make myself sick then made a joke about me using my long acrylic nails as a tool to make myself throw up , she then said there’s nothing she can do and I need to go to my community mental health team , then proceeded to call me a taxi and send me home then made jokes about the taxi being a chofer on the nhs , I left the place in tears I was crying and I was in bits and she didn’t even bat and eye ( everything could be seen on cctv) I got treated as nothing there and basically got degraded .

Ridiculous! Always sent home with no support other than being told I’m “fine” and that my mental heath struggles are all “behavioural” and “attention seeking” but yet they say this to 90% of the people they see! They… are programmed to say this I swear it’s all that comes out their mouths. I reached out for help from nhs 24 and was listened to and told I would get all this help and was then transferred to the crisis team where it went the complete opposite way! As soon as they answered the phone and took my name they treated me like the way they always do and spoke down to me as if my life meant nothing to them which it doesn’t and that’s clear to see! Being taken in by multiple police officers and security under a section yet being sent away because I’m “fine” and have the decision to end my life if I wanted to -_- I was sent away after being told I was not in a crisis and this is usual behaviour for me and I “wouldn’t do anything” and it was all “threats” even though I have previous history of significant suicide attempts and yet was sent on my way to do so again … but the AUDACITY to section me for my own “saftey” and because I didn’t have capacity even though I was told hours before I had full capacity? Where is the sense in this and who’s making these decisions if someone had capacity or not by a short meeting where they don’t listen and don’t take in to account life events or don’t try to understand how we feel but yet can say if we are safe to go home?! If you are concerned for my welfare after I attempt and not when I’m reaching out saying what I wanted to do then that shows a lot. We are all just number on a waiting list to them, you phone and they “assess” you and that’s their job done and another dollar in their pocket. The mental health system is failing everyone everyday and they do not care about their patients at all. One less problem for them isn’t it?

90% of the nurses were in the job for gossip and refused to help vulnerable patients. Patients helped each other more than the nurses would. Responsible nurses are a rarity in Carseview

Spent 3 weeks locked in this facility, the staff are obviously overworked and go through so much stress as their mood swings are about as bad as mine and I have a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder lol. So it… is a bit of a hit or miss when it comes to asking to speak to someone or wanting to simply just have a "chat" about my feelings or anything I need to speak to them about because sometimes (going by their reaction) it's like you're asking them for a kidney, where as sometimes they are more than happy to sit and listen as I speak my verbal diarrhoea. I would advise when speaking to anyone in there, wether it be a "healthcare assistant" or "consultant" (massive thank you to Lynn? The healthcare assistant with blue hair who is actually passionate about her job and genuinely wants to help and does not do it for the money but wants to honestly help people, and she also doesn't make false promises (unlike some others in there) ) that you talk with caution, be careful who you trust and what you tell them "only a fish with its mouth open gets caught". I have an eating disorder so I can't leave a fair review about the food but, the bedrooms.......... Hahaha all of the furniture is fixed to the walls, the bed is a "easy clean" uncomfortable mattress that you'd normally find in a holding cell in police custody (don't ask me how I know), anti-suffocation bed sheets and pillows (for obvious reasons), the drawers do remove pretty easy and easy to use as a shield during a "extraction" however 2 golfers with a horrendous handicap and 4 other members of staff make it hard to get out of their interpretation of a "position of restraint". Don't stress if you need certain "home comforts" there are people who can get you what you what when you want. Long story short, avoid the place at all costs, Murray Royal is a much better lunatic asylum.

My partner had mental health issues and was self harming, I once had to get police to try n help her, they said she be best trying to get help from carsview, she phoned them up while police was with her, but they said… she sounded fine over the phone and refused to help, even the police felt disgusted by carsview, they refused to help someone with mental health problems and was self harming simply cause she sounded fine on a phone call, within a matter of time...she passed away she was only 39yrs old, and carsview REFUSED to help, the place needs either closed down or all staff replaced, they left a 17yr old motherless, they are totally heartless and uncaring....... oh and lets not forget about the young man that took his own life in carsview while under a secure unit..... something really needs done about this place

A friend spent a few days here with shocking care. Having been found with a ligature around her neck they told her, "That's enough. Stop scaring the staff". Then sent her home because her "behaviours" were getting… worse! I rang 5 times to speak to the doctor on duty, because my friend was so distressed. The doctor told her he didn't even know why she was there despite her being told to go there by other medical professionals whose care she was under. The nurses said he would ring me back, but he never did. She walked out, past the doctor in reception, who never said a word. She went home and collapsed. Yes, mental health care is definitely in crisis here.

My husband went into the Mullberry unit in 2017, the ward staff were fantastic BUT the consultant Pell DID NOT listen to him, stated his meds were not needing to be changed because he was with in the guidelines,, the… clue is in the word "guide" everyone is different,, and even with a straight face,, this doctor had a smugness to him,, i stated that I couldn't keep my husband safe due to living on a farm with a agriculture chemical shed a 100mtr from my front door and having a shed full of Chainsaws,,, I was told that it wasn't up to me to keep in safe it was the responsibility of my husband,, put in a complaint to the gent that was in charge of Carseview,, it ended up that my fellas "out patients " Consultant came in to take over,, the outcome meds were changed and he spent 4 months in the Mullberry unit,, it was a long road but we got there, 4 stars for the ward staff,, 5 stars for the Out patients Consultant,, nothing for Pell.
