About Centro da Tomada
Centro da Tomada is a residential centre of Comunidade Vida e Paz, a Lisbon-based IPSS that has worked with individuals experiencing homelessness since 1989. Set in Lapa, Venda do Pinheiro, in the municipality of Mafra, the centre combines a therapeutic community for alcohol and drug addictions with associated comorbidities and an insertion community for the social reintegration phase.
The organisation works in three stages: outreach on the street, treatment and rehabilitation in its therapeutic and insertion communities, then social reintegration. At Tomada, residents receive social and psychological follow-up, therapeutic counselling and personal and social skills development, take part in structured rehabilitation activities, and are helped to define life goals and prepare for work. Referral to complementary services is arranged where needed. After the programme, Comunidade Vida e Paz offers reintegration apartments and post-discharge support with work, housing, documents and healthcare. State-contracted beds mean most residents arrive through the public referral route, with the charity’s own outreach teams as a second door.

Centro da Tomada Alcohol and Drug Services
Centro da Tomada offers a residential therapeutic community for alcohol and drug addiction, an insertion community for the reintegration phase, and access to reintegration apartments and post-discharge support through the wider organisation. The centre is intended for individuals experiencing homelessness or social vulnerability whose addiction comes with associated comorbidities, and contracted places include beds for dual diagnosis.
Psychological follow-up and therapeutic counselling run alongside social follow-up, personal and social skills development and structured rehabilitation and autonomy activities, with clinical and psychological care described as based on recognised therapeutic models. Support staff help residents set life goals, prepare for job integration and connect with complementary services. Specific therapies, medications and medical staffing are not listed for this site, so ask the team directly about psychiatric input and programme length.

How Much Does Treatment at Centro da Tomada Cost?
Centro da Tomada has beds contracted with the State under an ICAD convention, so a place through the public referral route carries a client contribution rather than the full fee. Its operator is a donation-funded IPSS. Any privately funded place is self-pay, typically €6,000 to €16,500 a month for residential therapeutic community care. Contact the centre for a quote.
Fifty-two of the centre’s 65 licensed beds are contracted, with places set aside for alcohol dependence, dual diagnosis and long stays, and the organisation’s work with individuals experiencing homelessness means cost is rarely the barrier to entry. Reintegration apartments and post-discharge support are not priced here. Ask the team what, if anything, a resident is expected to contribute.

Centro da Tomada Reviews
Reviews of Centro da Tomada from around the web are limited, and much of the public feedback about Comunidade Vida e Paz concerns its street outreach in Lisbon rather than the Mafra therapeutic community. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for this centre, and anyone who has lived at Tomada, or volunteered or worked alongside residents there, is welcome to share their experience.
The organisation itself is well regarded for its long record with individuals experiencing homelessness, but a first-hand account of the therapeutic community, the move into the insertion community and the support after discharge would help you or someone you care about understand what the programme is like from the inside.
