Wrexham Maelor Hospital Detox and Rehab Services
Wrexham Maelor Hospital is the district general hospital for Wrexham and the surrounding area, providing hospital-based care across services including maternity, paediatrics, radiotherapy and emergency medicine. Mental health inpatient care on the site is delivered through the on-site Heddfan Psychiatric Unit rather than through a separate addiction treatment programme.
The hospital’s published information doesn’t set out a specific drug or alcohol treatment approach; individual therapy is recorded as part of care provided on site. Anyone looking for addiction-specific treatment should ask the hospital directly how it connects with mental health and substance misuse services, as this depends on the individual case.

How Much Does Treatment at Wrexham Maelor Hospital Cost?
As a general district hospital rather than a dedicated addiction treatment provider, Wrexham Maelor doesn’t map cleanly onto standard detox and rehab cost categories, so regional figures are included here only as background context rather than a like-for-like guide. As an NHS hospital, care is generally provided at no direct cost to residents admitted or referred through the appropriate route, with eligibility depending on residency and clinical need.
Contact the hospital or the referring GP or service directly to ask how admission for a mental-health or substance-related need is actually arranged, and what happens if ongoing community support is needed after discharge.

Wrexham Maelor Hospital Reviews
Anyone with direct experience of the hospital — as a patient, a relative, or a health professional who has referred someone here — is encouraged to add a review to help others get a fuller picture.
Given the range of services on the site, it’s worth looking at accreditation and staffing alongside reviews; Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) inspects the hospital and publishes reports covering individual wards and departments. A useful question to ask is how the hospital coordinates mental health or substance-related care with community services after discharge.
If I could give this less stars I would, Im beginning to loose count of hod many terrible experiences I've had here - my husband with cancer going through chemo who got SEPSIS was left in a&e without a bed for 4 days… then moved to a ward with multiple people in it when he should have been isolating - he wasn't fed and was frequently forgotten at breakfast time - discharge day wasn't fed or given any water I found hon outside
Had a motorbike accident waited with broken wrist , bruises and wasn’t sure for internal bleeding either waited for 8 hours to be told another 4-5 hours maybe longer till I get to be seeing . If you wanna see your maker… quickly this place has the reputation. Mistreatments , misdiagnoses, long waiting time … It’s getting worse and worse and they know it . Why don’t you all take on the streets for this ? ? Isn’t shocking people are dying at this hospital because of all this but you all wait quietly full of pain for hours even knee day just to be seeing … I’ve got nothing else to say
I recently went for an endoscopy at Wrexham Maelor. I just wanted to thank all the team who looked after me they were all so kind and caring and helped me get through a daunting procedure. Credit where it's due we are… lucky to have such dedicated and professional people.
Everyone is very helpful
Maxfaxcillio Dept. I went to this dept in the Maelor hospital. For a small surgical procedure. Everything went well and the staff were all excellent and professional. I was nervous but they put me at ease. So well done… to you all. Thank you.
Absolutely discraceful service, been waiting over a year for an ENT operation and now have been asked to return for a consultation again because the last person who consulted me was “agency” I try to make a complaint… and I’ve now spent 40 minutes of my time trying to get hold of somebody for them to put the phone town each and every time I reach the front of the queue, sat there having a chat with colleagues buttoning people worried about their health! DISCUSTING.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Everyone Who Cared for My Wife During Her Pregnancy ❤️🙏 From the beginning of my wife’s pregnancy until the very end, I want to express my deepest and most sincere gratitude to Ms. Becky… Barcklay, our midwife, and to everyone who supported and cared for my wife throughout this journey. Ms. Becky has been truly incredible. She cared for my wife through every single moment the good times, the difficult times, and every serious moment in between. She was always there when we needed her. Even when she was off duty, she would reply to our texts and calls and make sure we were okay. As a Sri Lankan, I am incredibly proud and grateful that she never once made us feel like we were from a different country. She treated us with kindness, respect, compassion and genuine care from the very beginning. Honestly, the level of care we received is something I never expected, even when compared with the care we would hope to receive in our own country. Ms. Becky, you are truly one of the best people in the world. ❤️ We will never forget everything you have done for my wife and our family. I also want to give a huge thank you to the entire team at Maelor Hospital, Wrexham, and the NHS Wales maternity team. After my wife’s gestational diabetes diagnosis, through all the appointments, decisions and preparations for her C-section, every doctor, nurse, midwife and member of staff treated us with kindness and professionalism. A special thank you to Ms. Amy Jones, who looked after my wife so well and took care of everything until she finished her duty. We will always remember her kindness and dedication. ❤️ And finally, Ms. Abby, thank you so much for everything you did for us. Your care and support meant a lot to our family. To every doctor, nurse, midwife, surgeon and member of staff who played a part in bringing our baby safely into the world THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS. 🙏❤️ After experiencing this entire journey, I can honestly say that Maelor Hospital, Wrexham, and the NHS Wales team will always have a very special place in our hearts. As a family, we are incredibly grateful to every single person who cared for my wife. You didn’t just provide medical care you gave us kindness, reassurance, comfort and hope when we needed it most. We will never forget you. ❤️🙏 Thank you, NHS Wales. Thank you, Maelor Hospital. Thank you to every single member of staff. You are truly amazing. ❤️🇬🇧🇱🇰 Demuni / Ralf
Shocking place. I have nothing more than trauma. A&e long waiting time, no one is interested if you dying or not in awaiting room. Labour department - some of the midwifes are fine, but some of them clearly ignoring… you, and your intuition hence i did end up with post-complications. Everything supposed to be a beautiful memory, but changed into nightmare.
The NHS ambulance team helped me deliver my baby at home - December 2025 and the women in charge who led the team was amazing, there was one or two members of staff who were learning and all of them kept so professional… and made me feel at ease. Can't thank them enough for helping me. I was meant to have my baby born in the hospital but it all happened very quickly and I'd do it again! Thank you NHS ambulance team!
Visited the voluntary run cafe in the hospital, lovely staff. I was charged £2.30 for a latte, which was reasonable, or so I thought. It tasted awful and looked like treacle. I then found out that the staff are using… cheap coffee sachets, NOT the nescafe ones seen on the shelf (as I often drink these and they are good). It is completely unacceptable to charge £2.30 for a drink that doesn't taste or resemble a latte, it is taking advantage of patients, staff and visitors.
it realy helped me so much
I recently gave birth to our baby at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and I couldn’t be more grateful for the care we received. From the moment I arrived, every member of staff was kind, caring and supportive. The nurses and… midwives were amazing and always there whenever I needed help. They made me feel safe, comfortable and well looked after throughout my labour and stay on the ward. I had such a positive birth experience and I’m so grateful that everything went smoothly. They made me feel supported every step of the way and I couldn’t have asked for better care. I can’t thank the team enough. ❤️
Nearly a week here so far and what an incredible group of people! Looked after me so well and just lovely bones on them. I think we all need to remember what these people go through to care for us and I have seen first… hand how they put us patients before themselves. Please remember this treat these guys with the respect they truly deserve. Sometimes they hurt and need some kindness too. Sending lots of love to nurse Dorinda who amongst giving everything to look after us is currently going through a very tough time. Thank you so much ladies and gentlemen. What you do is priceless!❤️
Thanks for seeing my son today so promptly...after an operation the wound got infected and he was seen by sau team straight away..thank you all ...
Just come out of after few days stay in the Maelor, can’t get over how wonderful and dedicated the staff our work under a lot of pressure , very humbled.
My partner was in a&e for three days on a trolley and by the time she left this "hospital" had level 3 bedsores
My husband had a heart attack on Saturday 16th May. He stopped breathing, our friend started CPR until the first ambulance crew arrived, they took over, a neighbours friend joined them working on my husband. Two more… crews arrived, plus 2 First Responders. These all worked together and we are so thankful that my husband is recovering in the Critical Care Unit here in Wrexham. The ambulance crews kept popping in to check on John and I, they were wonderful. The Nursing Staff regularly offered multiple drinks, and checked in on us. They to me all went beyond their roles. I truly thank all the staff for the care and consideration, how do you thank such kindness. My husband is slowly recovering but exceeding expectations. He's walking further than they thought he could, he hates bothering them, he has kept cheerful throughout, despite fracturing his neck when he fell. If medals could be given, all those he's encountered in the Critical Care Unit, most definitely deserve one. The Care and consideration given by all the staff is exemplary. Both Len and I applaud The Maelor and hope that in some way we can pay back what he's received. Joyce Haworth.
I attended A&E due to diagnosed pleurisy and significant breathing difficulties. One doctor, Dr Amelia, spent considerable time assessing me and acknowledged that my symptoms were related to my physical health condition… and the anxiety that naturally comes with struggling to breathe. I was reassured that this was not being treated as a mental health issue. However, after a shift change, a second doctor briefly assessed me for only a couple of minutes before suddenly informing me that my children were “at risk” and that safeguarding/social services referrals were being made. The complete contradiction between two clinicians in such a short space of time was extremely distressing and honestly shocking. I felt unheard, judged, and unfairly treated despite attending hospital for a genuine physical health condition. Safeguarding should absolutely exist where necessary, but serious decisions like this should be based on thorough assessment and consistent clinical reasoning not a rushed interaction after minutes of contact. I will be making a formal complaint regarding the handling of my care and the inconsistent decision-making I experienced.
Absolute joke of a hospital, went in with suspected cauda equine, waited around for 12 hours to be told that an enlarged prostate is causing all my symptoms!!! And that eurology would call me back in a couple of days as… I needed to be cathertered,5 days later still no call from said department and pain levels of the scale, gp ended up being called out and couldn't believe what he was told !! Since when does the prostate cause loss of feeling and pins and needles in thighs legs feet,, and excruciating lumbar pain
Left my 83 year old Grandad to sit and sleep in a chair waiting for a bed on a ward for over 24 hours!
Recently been to the hospital on 3 seperate occasions and I couldn’t have found a fault with all departments I interacted with. Endoscopy unit - the Nurses there were absolutely lovely with me. Allowing me to ask as… many questions as I wanted and had answers for all of them! They were patient caring and I felt comfortable with everyone there! Radiology unit - I was seen here on a weekend appointment, the team here were really caring, friendly and chatty! I had a few random questions about the MRI machine and they answered and taught me a lot! A and E department - found myself and my partner in A and E yesterday morning. The person at the reception desk was really helpful. The rest of the nurse team handled our worries really well and took their time with my partner. Even in such a fast paced environment like A and E. We felt like we were looked after and had their focus on my partner when it was required. I planned to be in the department for a long while but thanks to the Nurses and Doctors efforts we were only in there 5 hours maximum. Considering all the pressure and how spread thin the NHS is right now, I feel grateful to have such positive interactions with the various teams at the Maelor!
My father was in the hospital for 6 days before he passed peacefully on the morning of April 4 2026. My heartfelt thanks for all of the drs nurses and staff that took such good care . I live in America and I was glad to… be there with dad. Thank you again for all of his care
I've given 1 star for the lovely Nurses and other staff, with the exception of one of the chrge nurses. I was admitted to mason ward for a dislocated hip, despite undergoing revision surgery 11months prior to prevent my… hip from dislocating. I had a full hip replacement in 2020 due to a hip fracture. This was ok for 3.5 yrs then it started clicking when I bent over eventually resulting in a dislocation. They put it in, only for it to happen again a few months later. I was then booked for revision surgery in April 2025. The revision seemed to go ok until 9 months later my hip started to ache particularly when bending over. I put up iththis for a few months then on the 21st march it dislocated again. What I haven't said is that when I went for my 6 week check up after the original THA in 2020, the surgeon told me he'd left a piece of cement in there and he said 'damn i didn't mean to do that'. I was alarmed and said what could that mean. He said probably nothing. Well after googling( which I know isn't an exact science I know) but when I asked the question what could happen if a piece of cement is left floating after a THA and sure enough it says it can get caught between the joint often resulting in a clicking sensation a occasionally dislocation!!! Mr Paul Hunter, I am so absolutely fed up, no I'm furious..I've wasted years of my life not to mention what's going to happen from here. I'm thankfully now in Gabowen hospital in Oswestry which is one of the leading orthopaedic hospitals in the uk. But whilst in wreham maelor because I couldn't pass water on a bed pan, I saidI could easily get onto commode, they wouldn't let me, although they did a few days later nothing hd changed. Anyway before this they said we'll have to catherterise you. I was horrified as I've had a long history of uni's but at home I know how to prevent myself usually from getting a uti. Of course the catherterisation caused a UTI! And as I lie here in Gbowen hospital the antibiotics they gave me haven't worked as I don't believe it ws the correct one for the typeof bacteria i had contracted. I have also got a condition called interstitial cystitis. Which is very irritated by having a UTI. I think/ know this hospital is dirty. It is behind the times and II would be very anxious about spending muh time here, if you have to at all. Unless you're under a professor or a very mature experienced consultant who doesn't think so highly of himself , not even saying hello to the nurses...I was told this then stay well clear unless you really have no alternative. This has been a lengthy story but its all been totally down to this awful, awful institution!
There have been so many bad posts about the hospital but I just want to thank the ambulance crew that picked me up from my doctors, everyone in rhesus and acute medical unit and the critical care team where I am at the… moment. I was terrified I was going to die but everyone of them were kind and caring and put me at ease. The places I was in were clean , my needs were met everywhere. I'm on the road to recovery thanks to the wonderful caring staff at Wrexham Maelor.
Referred my husband to Aand E yesterday afternoon. Arrived 5.00 oclock , Triaged, ecg, blood test and on obs ward by 7pm . Excellent care although A and E was busy. Obs ward staff superb. Thank you for sorting my… husband out !! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
My father of 74 was sent here to A&E after the GP told him to get to hospital due to a sudden agonising pain in his head. Left him in an uncomfortable plastic chair in a corner for 18 HOURS with NO medication and NO ONE… coming to check on him. Only go here if you are desperate to die.
