About Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal
Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal is a psychiatric hospital in Mem Martins, Sintra, run by the Hospitaller Order of St John of God and open since 1893, making it the Order’s oldest unit in Portugal. Four areas are stated: mental health and psychiatry; alcohol, addictive behaviours and dependencies; psychosocial rehabilitation; and dementia and neurocognition.
The addiction area offers detox, clinical stabilisation, psychotherapeutic follow-up and progressive community reintegration, following the model the Instituto S. João de Deus applies across its network: inpatient care is reserved for severe dependence, clinical risk or where a safe detox is needed, with outpatient treatment, a day unit or structured follow-up for everyone else. Treatment is voluntary. The hospital grew from the Quinta do Telhal estate, which cared for soldiers returning from the First World War from 1914 and developed into a small village of pavilions, streets and gardens. First contact is through 219 179 200 or geral.telhal@isjd.pt.

Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal Detox and Rehab Services
Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal treats dependence on alcohol, illicit substances and misused medication through intensive inpatient programmes, outpatient treatment, a day unit and structured follow-up, alongside general psychiatry and dementia care. Inpatient programmes open with medical, psychological and motivational assessment, then supervised physical detox, individual and group psychotherapy, relapse prevention, skills training, occupational therapy and spiritual support.
Families are involved from the early stages through psychoeducation and family sessions. The multidisciplinary addiction team brings together psychiatry, general and family medicine, clinical psychology, nursing, social work, occupational therapy and spiritual care, working within an integrative bio-psycho-social and spiritual model aimed at long-term recovery. Dementia and neurocognition services include cognitive stimulation and caregiver support, and psychosocial rehabilitation runs through to community reintegration. Programme details come from the operator’s network description rather than a Telhal-specific page, so ask the hospital what is currently running on site.

Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal sits on Estrada do Telhal in Mem Martins, in the municipality of Sintra, Lisboa district, postcode 2725-117. The hospital occupies the historic Quinta do Telhal estate, a rural campus of pavilions, streets and gardens rather than a single hospital building.

Programmes run privately and in articulation with the SNS, so ask which route applies to you or a loved one.

How Much Does Treatment at Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal Cost?
Published prices for Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal weren’t found. The operator states that its alcohol and dependency programmes run privately and in articulation with the SNS, but gives no fee schedule. Self-pay psychiatric inpatient care typically costs €6,000 to €16,500 a month and a day programme €3,500 to €7,500 a month; contact the hospital for pricing.
Articulation with the SNS means some admissions are arranged through the public health service rather than paid directly, and the Instituto S. João de Deus also names the regional health services of Madeira and the Azores among its partners for its island units. Which arrangement applies depends on how you or a loved one is referred, so raise funding with the team on 219 179 200 at the first call, and ask whether outpatient or day-unit treatment, which the operator favours for less severe cases, changes the cost.

Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal Reviews
Online reviews of Instituto S. João de Deus – Telhal from around the web are limited, which is common for a religious-order psychiatric hospital whose work spans psychiatry, dementia and dependency care. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for the hospital, and anyone who has completed detox or an inpatient, day-unit or outpatient programme here is welcome to share their experience.
A useful review would say which programme you attended, how the assessment and detox were managed, whether family sessions were offered and what the follow-up looked like after discharge. Accounts of the estate itself, its pavilions and grounds, also help you or someone you care about picture daily life during an inpatient stay in a setting very different from a city hospital.
I was on the phone from 12 PM until 3:30 PM trying to speak with my doctor urgently due to new medication. And NO ONE bothered to answer the phone. And now??? Without the doctor's help "because answering the call center… gives you calluses," what am I going to do?? I'm bipolar and I pay like everyone else. I've always had a good impression of the clinic, but today, when I need it most, which is the day my psychiatrist is at the clinic, I won't speak with him and until next Friday I will continue to poison my blood with medication "because answering the call center to transfer external consultations is too much work." Thank you to the ladies who answer the call center for further harming my health.
Medical clinic
I have been a client of this clinic for years, using their outpatient services, and their computer system is never working properly. I would appreciate it if you could do something about it.
Excellent public service, outstanding healthcare professionals, and prices tailored to individual needs. Features include on-site parking, a bar, and accessibility for people with disabilities or reduced mobility.
I was there in February 2017, I was very well treated by all the professionals at the Novo Rumo Alcoholism Unit, but now I am having some difficulties integrating into society and I would like to speak with Dr.… Margarida Neto if possible. I have not returned to consuming alcohol or any other substance. I just wanted to speak with the Doctor if possible. Otherwise I will have to schedule an appointment. Thank you all and please review my case. Thank you very much. Manuel Peneda
