About ZAS PZ Stuivenberg – Antwerp

ZAS PZ Stuivenberg is the psychiatric hospital campus of Ziekenhuis aan de Stroom (ZAS), located in the Stuivenberg area of Antwerp. It provides acute and longer-term inpatient psychiatric care for adults, alongside a psychiatric day hospital, a psychosis care track and a dedicated addiction care track, Traject Verslavingszorg.

The addiction programme treats adults whose primary dependence is on alcohol, prescribed medication or cannabis, alongside secondary drug use, running an eight-day residential crisis admission for withdrawal and a longer residential programme that opens with an assessment period. Group and individual work continue into an outpatient aftercare clinic offering abstinence support, breath testing, supervised administration of disulfiram and a resocialisation group, with referrals handled through a weekly intake process.

ZAS PZ Stuivenberg Detox and Rehab Services

ZAS PZ Stuivenberg‘s addiction care track, Traject Verslavingszorg, treats adults whose main dependence is on alcohol, prescribed medication or cannabis, alongside secondary drug use. It offers a short residential admission focused on withdrawal, followed where needed by a longer residential programme that begins with an assessment period, plus an outpatient aftercare clinic and a resocialisation group for ongoing support.

Work is carried out in both group and individual sessions depending on agreed goals, and supervised administration of disulfiram is recorded as part of aftercare. As with any hospital programme, exactly what’s offered can depend on the track and stage of treatment, so it’s worth confirming what applies to your situation.

How Much Does Treatment at ZAS PZ Stuivenberg Cost?

For the short residential withdrawal admission, Belgian market figures for medical detox in this tier run to around €5,200–€16,000 (£4,500–£14,000), while the longer residential programme sits closer to €8,700–€21,000 (£7,500–£18,000); these are general market estimates for the Antwerp area, not ZAS PZ Stuivenberg‘s own charges.

As this is a public hospital service, treatment may also be accessible through Belgium’s health insurance system (mutualités/ziekenfondsen) at reduced direct cost, though this depends on residency and insurance status rather than being automatic for visitors from abroad. Contact the intake team to ask how a referral works and what it covers.

ZAS PZ Stuivenberg Reviews

Anyone who has been treated at ZAS PZ Stuivenberg, or supported a loved one through its addiction care track, is encouraged to leave a review describing their experience.

Beyond reviews, it’s worth considering the hospital’s regulatory oversight as part of a larger psychiatric group, its structured, staged approach to withdrawal and longer-term care, and how referrals are handled. A good question to ask is what the assessment period involves and how the team decides between the short and longer residential tracks.

The negative reviews here must be down to the people themselves, because this is a fantastic hospital with top-class staff. Compassion, people skills, tailored attention, and a great atmosphere too. After a while, it… feels like your second home, even though you aren't here for fun. To everyone who, like me, was nervous about being admitted here – trust this place and this team!

Hats off to the guidance in the broadest sense. Their empathy, trust, and dedication are priceless!!!! A sincere and big pat on the back... I want to be gentle and grateful for you. That's why I'm patting you on the… back. 😉👍👊

I am the sister of a patient treated at your hospital. I wish to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the staff, especially the doctors and nurses. I am delighted by the significant improvement in my brother's… mental health, as I live in a very distant country. I decided to express my joy, thanks, and gratitude here. I repeat: thank you, thank you to all the staff.

I second the many negative experiences with this psychiatric hospital. The staff is indeed substandard, and patients do not receive the care they deserve. This is not okay and must improve.

Be careful sending your children here. This is a story about me from when I was 13 and admitted to this hospital. To this day, I still suffer serious trauma from it. The nursing staff, with a few exceptions, were far… from humane. I sometimes spent an entire week here completely NAKED in the middle of winter in an "isolation room." Not for any specific reason, other than that the nurses "didn't like me." I was barely given any food or drink. This caused me enormous traumatic problems, including significant psychological ones. There were also several suicides on the ward where I was. As a 13-year-old, I literally witnessed one myself (accidental, but unfortunately, it still happens). You'd expect them to tell my parents or someone that: 1. This happened. 2. I, as a 13-year-old, witnessed this. I understand, first of all, that this might not be communicated and kept as quiet as possible, but the fact that my parents weren't even informed about this incident? As a 13-year-old, already completely traumatized by weeks of absolutely inhumane care in the middle of winter (by a nurse), I was never really able to tell my parents such things until I recently asked my mother why she never sought help for that case after talking to psychologists for help. My mother's answer? She knew nothing, oh, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Be extremely careful with this psychiatry. This was, of course, about 15-20 years ago, but for you as a parent, I still want to inform you that in this hospital, they easily keep quiet about VERY SERIOUS problems. Don't share things with you as parents that could be traumatic for any child. Nurses who literally BULLY or ABUSED their own patients. (Of course, I wasn't the only one to whom such things happened.) They also lie and say their "camera" or "recordings" aren't working or are broken when parents ask for footage of these isolation rooms. Yet, when you're inside with zero contact with the outside world, these things magically work 100%. Beware, I'm not the only victim of these practices; many have committed suicide while in these conditions or afterward. There are countless better practices.

I call them and they don't answer. I ask for information about the patient, they don't even know who he or she is and they pile the work on each other.

Poor patient follow-up, promises not kept. After a dispute, they lie... a very dishonest treatment. I advise everyone to choose a different psychiatric practice!

I used to go there for therapy. There were two women, Hanneke and Tinneke, whom we called the couple. They were two arrogant women who, probably on orders, put me in the isolation room every day for the last week of my… stay. This gave me claustrophobia. If you had a problem or something bothering you, they'd just laugh at you or grin at each other like they were popular schoolgirls. Really classy, I must say. Tinneke and Hanneke, if you're reading this: do you realize what you've done to people? I hope you've either reformed your lives or that you no longer work in psychiatry, because you don't belong there.

About ten drawings by 'Rookie Zwarthoed' AKA Ken Van Peteghem can be viewed in all departments of Psychiatry Stuivenberg. You can also watch videos and read books by this artist/patient on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram,… and Facebook. Definitely worth following!

I advise everyone to stay away from psychiatrist Kirsten Catthoor if you wish to receive adequate guidance and help. A family member has been admitted multiple times and is under the "supervision" of Catthoor. The… patient has rarely, if ever, seen Catthoor, comes across as uninterested when participating in a team meeting, and the most scandalous thing is that Catthoor makes decisions that could put the patient in danger! If you want to raise this issue as a concerned family member, she simply hangs up! This kind of unprofessional, inadequate, and malicious behavior is unacceptable and contrary to prescribed codes of ethics. I am reporting this to the Medical Association and the Ombudsman. I do not want vulnerable patients and family members to have to endure similar misery and potential danger due to an inadequate psychiatrist.

My first and only experience with this hospital was extremely bad. In the emergency room (!), you have to wait a very long time for help, only to be told you should go to another hospital, a long way away, because they… can't provide the proper care. I hope I never end up here again.

During crises in the past, I was completely fixated on verbal threats (that I would leave psychiatry); for this hospital, there are no words, the staff is substandard, and I have had very frightening experiences!

Horrible. Caregivers are so lethargic/dull, constantly repeat themselves, and offer little added value. They lack self-confidence, have no field experience, and have absolutely no feeling for their work, which is… attributable to points like those mentioned above. I feel sorry for people who need urgent psychological intervention and then end up with such "therapists."
