About Betel Barreiro

Betel Barreiro is a non-residential contact point and social shop of Associação Betel Portugal, a non-profit Christian social rehabilitation organisation active in Portugal since 1996. Betel runs free, immediate-entry residential programmes of at least 12 months for young people and adults affected by drug addiction, alcoholism or homelessness; its Lisbon-area men’s house is in Almada.

The Barreiro shop sells donated second-hand goods, and its income helps fund the programme. Anyone in Barreiro seeking help can make first contact here, on +351 212 070 525 or at betel_lisboa@hotmail.com, and be guided towards the Almada house, where a stay includes accommodation, meals, clothing, hygiene products, medication and help with social, legal, health and family problems, alongside psychology consultations, group dynamics, social casework and occupational work in Betel’s furniture, sewing and social-shop projects. No treatment or accommodation is provided at the Barreiro address itself, and no clinical detox or licensed medical service is stated anywhere in the programme.

Betel Barreiro Alcohol and Drug Services

Betel Barreiro provides no treatment on site: the address is a non-residential social shop and contact point through which individuals affected by drug addiction, alcoholism or homelessness can reach Betel’s free residential programme, run from a men’s house in Almada. That programme lasts at least 12 months and is social and occupational rather than medical.

Within the programme, individualised psychosocial intervention, psychology consultations, group dynamics and social casework address behaviour, self-esteem and emotional self-control, while daily work in carpentry and furniture restoration, a sewing atelier, a pellet workshop, a social cafeteria and the social shops gives structure and funds the community. Substances addressed are drugs and alcohol in general terms; no detox, medication-assisted treatment, psychiatric cover or dual-diagnosis service is listed. Anyone needing supervised withdrawal should arrange it before entry, and the Barreiro contact can explain how the first days in Almada are organised.

How Much Does Treatment at Betel Barreiro Cost?

Betel’s programme, reached through Betel Barreiro, is completely free of charge, with immediate entry. Associação Betel Portugal funds its residential rehabilitation work through social shops like the non-residential one in Barreiro, furniture restoration and removals and donations, so nothing is charged for accommodation, meals, clothing, medication or support during the 12-month stay in Almada.

No public funding route, State contract or client contribution is described, and there is no private pay rate because the programme is not sold as a service. Donating furniture, clothing or household goods to the Barreiro shop is one way the community sustains itself. The main cost for anyone entering is at least 12 months away from paid work, so ask how the programme supports a return to employment.

Betel Barreiro Reviews

Reviews of Betel Barreiro from around the web are limited, and because the address is a social shop rather than a treatment site, online comments are likely to concern shopping or donating rather than the programme. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for Betel Barreiro, and anyone who made first contact here before entering the programme is welcome to share their experience.

Accounts of how the Barreiro team handled a first approach, how quickly entry to the Almada house followed and what the 12-month community was like would help individuals and families in the Barreiro area decide whether to walk in.

I contacted Betel and spoke with a gentleman who introduced himself as Mr. Aristides, who asked me to send a photo of the sofa (which is in good condition) that I intend to donate via WhatsApp. I asked this gentleman to… give me feedback. He saw the message and didn't even bother to reply. I called again and he didn't answer, I sent another message and he didn't reply. What can I say about this situation? This gentleman's lack of training does not do justice to the image of the Association. It only confirms all the negative reviews I have read about the association.

It is unacceptable that this association is asking for money to take donated furniture. Unacceptable!!!!

The sofa was purchased as being in impeccable condition but was tied up with ropes underneath; they should have been honest.

Cheap books, furniture, and more. And they even help charity with the money from the sales. I recommend it!

A space filled with love for others. A space that, while offering high-quality secondhand items, doesn't sell them at exorbitant prices. A space of kindness.
