Hafan y Coed Detox and Rehab Services
Hafan y Coed is Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s specialist adult mental health inpatient unit, based on the University Hospital Llandough site in Penarth. It provides inpatient mental health assessment and treatment across several wards, with mental health services for older people also delivered on the same site. The published information doesn’t separate substance-use programming from its broader mental health remit.
An individual assessment and treatment process is recorded for patients admitted to the unit, though no particular therapy model, group work or medication is named in the available information. Given this is a general psychiatric inpatient service rather than an addiction-specific programme, it’s worth asking directly how substance use is addressed alongside a patient’s wider mental health care.

How Much Does Treatment at Hafan y Coed Cost?
As an NHS Wales inpatient unit, Hafan y Coed provides care at no direct cost to eligible residents, with admission arranged through the health service rather than self-pay, and eligibility generally depending on residency and clinical need. Because Hafan y Coed is a general psychiatric inpatient unit rather than an addiction-specific residential programme, the standard treatment-cost categories for the area are included only as broader market context rather than a like-for-like guide.
Since admission here runs through the NHS rather than direct payment, the most useful step is to ask the referring clinical team how an admission to Hafan y Coed is arranged and how substance use support is coordinated during a patient’s stay.

Hafan y Coed Reviews
Patients treated at Hafan y Coed, their families, or professionals who have referred someone to the unit are encouraged to share a review of their experience.
Hafan y Coed is inspected by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, which publishes reports on individual wards, and it’s worth checking these alongside the clinical team’s approach to your care. A good question to ask is how the unit coordinates mental health and substance use support during and after an admission.
(former patient) Such a terrible place, does nothing for your mental health, nurses ignore you, in 2024 one night I couldn't sleep and a nurse illegally gave me sleeping meds, did not work so they gave me way more, I… felt unwell and was messed up for a few days. In 2025 a patient kept trying to go into my bedroom, tried kicking the door down, would shake the door violently at night to try opening it, and one time had tricked the nurse to open the door for him, I have expressed concerns to the nurses, they did not believe me, despite there being cameras in the hospital. I feared for my safety, genuinely if you or a loved one is struggling with mental health, just make a mental health hospital be THE LAST CHOICE, it worsens the mental health. The food here is so bad if someone comes here with an ED [ eating disorder ] they will not recover 100%. Oh yeah, creepy patients will stare at you through the door windows, nurses will do nothing about it, this one patient kept doing that, I called him out and he said I have a crush on him? I'm a guy who uh, not into 😭
They dont want to deal with why your family member is there despite being presented with all the information. They are not there to help but talk round in circles and make you dizzy. One of their team came to the house… today. When I explained that there needs to be more support available to avoid future hospitalisation and Crisis Team intervention, she said it’s normal and unavoidable for somebody with a severe mental illness. I said there’s more that can be done, and she made me go through a list, as if I’m an idiot and don’t know anything. This woman was also speaking to my mum in the most patronising tone. They’re discharging her into a high risk environment, putting her on a 100-year waiting list for trauma therapy, and offering arts and crafts.
I don't fancy you
Came off meth onto buvidal in 2022 best decision I made the room I had was very cleaned and cleaned daily nice en suite and the food was delicious and im glad to say I am still on the jab and giving negatives
bad init
The mental health team at Hafan Y Coed are second to none. All the staff are fantastic, kind and make you feel at ease. I was very sceptical and scared to have treatment but I can honestly say I believe it saved my… life!!
Kind and friendly staff. Nice facilities and an outdoor area to sit down in also.
The staff are proactive and attentive, promptly addressing the needs of the patients.
My nice suffers so badly from her mental health. On admission she was in for 4wks. Whilst in the she managed to burn herself with a ligter and get some plastic and her herself. Then they decided to say she was fit for… discharge, left her in the waiting area on her own. Me and her mum arrived up the unit and we were given all her bags and that was it.Nobody gave a damn for her mental health even after speaking to a certain doctor and social mental health worker. Recently she was sectioned again by police and Llandough mental health unit discharged her at 1.30am early hours saying she is more at harm in hospital than home. And wanted to put her in a taxi on her own. Once again me and her mum went up there to collect her. How many times must a vulnerable young person need help and then told they can't help them. How many deaths are we going to hear about before the system is going to help people. Not all doctors and nurses should be tarred with the same brush but the ones we encountered seriously do not understand mental health and when somebody is on the verge of a breakdown they turn there back on them. If it was one of their family members they would 100% get the full benefit of the system.
Wonderfully caring, kind and hard working staff. Well done
Absolutely shocking treatment, my daughter has suffered mental health problems for 17 years, she self harms, has attempted suicide on a number of occasions, pulled all her hair out and scolded herself while in there… care yet they say she is stable what a joke, another assessment today and yes got told to leave hospital because I raised my voice I am a parent and I'm trying my best to get the help for my daughter it is so hard 😩 😪 we are all suffering
Ignored most of the time and buĺied
Peacefulness and lovely building
Friends who have relatives, compliment the management and staff every time they visit the home.
Amazing thanks for the help
This is by far the worst service I have ever seen in my entire life it’s absolutely horrifying what they are doing by assessing really ill patients who are clearly a risk to themselves and to others and then deeming… them fit to be released.upon them being released a lot of these people have then taken there own lives and nothing gets done about it.
Absolutely horrendous place. My sister has been there many times over the last 8 months or so and every time, they absolutely failed her. No therapy, no diagnosis, no treatment beyond sedation. No social worker or… programme to ensure patients are prepared for life after discharge. They have lied about her consenting to share, to avoid giving me answers. They released her with nowhere to go and without notifying anyone. They failed to end her section correctly by not filling out paperwork, meaning that she did not get the help she needed after being returned there almost immediately. Staff do not care about their patients and make it obvious that you're an inconvenience for checking in on your loved ones. They almost allowed a charging wire which could have been used to end life to be given to a suicidal patient, all they cared about was whether they could be filmed or not. They describe their patients as difficult and make it out as if it's the patients fault that they're not getting help. Avoid sending your loved ones here if you can avoid it.
Horrendous experience Would not want any parent to go through what I have. My children are my world and I’ve fought all her life to ensure she gets support. Yet staff on the ward do not like parents asking questions,… phoning for support for their daughter, , question why things not happened. The lack of empathy professionalism has completley shocked me. I would never want another parent to go through such an awful experience. You want best for you children/ young adults. You know them the best, you know how they work and what triggers them, how they fixate on people. Yet your the ones who made to feel as if you do not care, you do not understand well sorry but I do care, I do understand and I will always ensure my daughter gets the best support. I will always challenge, always ask questions . I will never stop as a mum it’s my job to ensure she gets best. They don’t like you asking Why capacity test not done ? How can they restrain her no Dols in place ? Why there is no social worker ? Why no support and it all has happened outside? Why information not shared when permissions given ? Why medicated so highly instead therapies ? Why no advocate despite asking and asking ? Staffs lack awareness of vulnerability how easily their condition can be masked. Staff are unable to acknowledge this and taken in very worrying Why is the full case history not read?? This would enable everyone to understand how people work and relate more. I am appalled at how the unit works and feel for everyone who does not have someone fighting for them I would like to say huge thank you to Vicky, Joshua, Jackson, and Karen manager and thank Cheryl lovely young lady in green always so helpful to my daughter. Rest need to take note of how they work stop judging, start communicating, have empathy, Caring is about togetherness, collaborative working, finding out root of this not making judgements, not jumping in when you really do not know situations. Lack of empathy understanding patience. It’s not a about quick turn around it’s about getting the right support, the right plan and maybe just maybe people would not need to be admitted few months after discharge. It’s time attitudes changes Time people realised impact their lack professionalism has on others I doubt very much this be posted as it’s the truth
Awful place. Pathetic attitude from staff who dont care about patients. All they want to do is discharge and pass on the buck. Truly awful lack of care
This place is not what it seems. You have one attempt to get it right. Good luck. And Godbless.
Warm, friendly and very caring. A hard working team. Especially, Sarah Morgan the new general manager.
It's very nice inside this hospital and Doctor's 💊 and nurse's are very friendly and helpful
