About The Woolshed Therapeutic Community (DASSA)

The Woolshed is a residential therapeutic community run by Drug and Alcohol Services South Australia for men and women aged 18 and over with drug or alcohol problems. The programme occupies a 28-hectare rural property near Strathalbyn, kept drug, alcohol and smoke free.

A stay runs four to six months, with a shorter period negotiable. Residents keep to a normal working week of daily work, craft, stress management, one-on-one counselling and group activities, and family contact is encouraged throughout. Entry requires prior detoxification through the DASSA Inpatient Withdrawal Service, a face-to-face intake assessment with a counsellor, and a doctor’s check-up with a referral letter. Halfway houses near the Adelaide central business district carry the aftercare.

The Woolshed Therapeutic Community (DASSA) Alcohol and Drug Services

The Woolshed offers residential rehabilitation as a therapeutic community, with aftercare through halfway houses nearer Adelaide. Alcohol, prescription medications, amphetamines, narcotics and polysubstance use are all treated, whether single-drug or poly-drug, over a stay of four to six months on the rural property.

Day-to-day treatment combines one-on-one counselling, group therapy, stress management and physical activity, with peer support from volunteers and former residents. Assessment before entry covers a face-to-face intake interview with a counsellor, urine drug screening, a breathalyser reading and a medical examination. Clients on medication assisted treatment for opioid dependence are accepted, and nicotine replacement by patch or inhaler is available given the smoke-free setting. The community describes its philosophy as aligned with the Australasian Therapeutic Community Essential Elements.

How Much Does Treatment at The Woolshed Therapeutic Community (DASSA) Cost?

Residents at The Woolshed pay A$220 per week for board and lodgings, plus their own personal expenditure. The treatment programme itself is government-funded through SA Health, so the weekly charge covers accommodation and meals rather than the therapeutic community’s clinical work.

Over a four to six month stay that weekly amount is the main predictable cost, alongside whatever personal spending a resident chooses. No private health insurance arrangement, Medicare rebate, NDIS package, Centrelink proportion or WorkCover pathway is named for the programme. The admissions team can explain how the weekly payment is collected and what it does not cover.

The Woolshed Therapeutic Community (DASSA) Reviews

Reviews of The Woolshed Therapeutic Community from around the web are limited, which is typical for a government-run therapeutic community at an undisclosed rural address. RehabSeekers hosts reviews for this programme, and former residents or family members are welcome to describe their time there.

Former residents are already part of the programme’s peer support, which suggests a community that stays in touch with those who have passed through. An account of the working week, how the group sessions felt over several months, and how the move to a halfway house near the city worked would give anyone considering a four to six month stay a much clearer picture.

Amazing place that saves lives

If you want it you'll get it at the shed. This was stepping out of my comfort zone into the unknown but I did it. I'm so grateful the experience, the people who became like family & all that it has given to me for me me… to be where I am now 2yrs 3months into my recovery. I actually miss being there sometimes. The structure & routine of the program is something I really miss, along with my house mates, games night, bus karaoke, the conversations, the finding of yourself, the adventures, the workers, the connections. The Woolsheds surroundings are incredibly peaceful. Thanks Woolshed People 🫶

This place is amazing , IF YOU actually want to get clean and sober my partner has done this program and has successfully succeeded with completion of the program it was not easy but do-able ,, the girl that I dropped… off to dasa (pre entry for the Woolshed) was scared ( fear of the unknown) and had anxiety about doing this program (understandable) but I knew she had the strength in her to commit . It was not easy not hearing from your partner for the first two weeks but then that phone RANG . Hearing her voice I shed some tears my heart went warm she was ok ( sigh of relief ) missing me , missing home , missing the dogs , missing the birds but SHE was OK , over the next five months I noticed the strength I could see in her come out and she could see that in herself, living by a structured time table , living with no phone , no smokes , being apart of a community . The girl , my girl was back better than ever with the tools and right mindset to help her live sober and handle situations that may come up in life . The happy girl I once knew was back , guys girls this has not been easy but definitely worth it if you want to commit and get sober in a supportive environment . I’d like to thank ALL the staff they have been amazing to me , and I’d like to thank my wife for committing to the program and wanting a better life for herself and us .and then when your partner gets home she decides to hook up with one of the alcoholic’s that she met there leaving a17 year relationship for a alcoholic that used the time to connect with a vonrable girl and destroy a relationship between two good people

Well, I went there 12 years ago , at first I found it too strict, but by the end it was protecting me , so I could Properly Heal. Ive been Sober/Drugfree, and Strong ever since, and it turned My whole life around, as… well as helped Me to Identify who was a genuine friend or support in My life, and to know what the "slippery" surfaces and snakes, in life are. God bless that place , seriously! ☆☆☆☆☆

The woolshed IS NOT an easy program . But it is structured and designed to get your life back on track. If you are truely genuinly committed to meeting the real you - sober and clean - I cant express enough that the… shed is the best place. And you will be talking to cousellors that have lived with addiction - the shed will help you meet the person that you are meant to be. YOU. You will not be judged. You will be making a wise decision - contacting the woolshed.
