What Is HealthSmart Interplan?

A legacy HealthSmart network. A provider reference guide dated June 1, 2010 listed Interplan Health Group as one of HealthSmart’s nationwide networks for group health and workers’ compensation payers. Interplan no longer appears as a network option on the current HealthSmart provider lookup or its network solutions page, so the brand is best read as an alias of the HealthSmart networks that absorbed it.

HealthSmart itself works from 1311 W President George Bush Highway in Richardson, Texas, having moved from Irving, the city Interplan was run from. The legal entity named in its site terms is HealthSmart Benefits Management, LLC, and the current site presents the company as a network solutions provider for plan administrators and plan sponsors with directly contracted and credentialed clinicians nationwide. An older description called it one of the country’s larger third party administrators for self-funded employer health plans.

What a Rented Network Does

It sets prices, not benefits. The network signs contracts with hospitals, clinics and clinicians at agreed rates, and an employer plan rents access to those rates for its members. The provider lookup states plainly that the network does not pay claims, determine eligibility or make benefit determinations, which is the whole difference between this and private insurance bought from a carrier.

Where the Name Still Appears

On ID cards, payer lists and billing screens that have not been rewritten. A California payer list examined shows a HealthSmart entry with Interplan in brackets, and a separate list pairs Interplan with a casualty administrator, which tells a reader only that the name survives in different places with different meanings. Treat it as a pointer to a HealthSmart network and ask which one, rather than as a plan with benefits of its own.

Which States and Plan Lines Does HealthSmart Cover?

All fifty states and the District of Columbia are selectable on the provider lookup, and the 2010 guide described Interplan as nationwide. The lines served are self-funded employer health plans, workers’ compensation and auto medical. No Medicaid, Medicare Advantage or marketplace product was found, so HealthSmart coverage is almost always employer coverage.

Which Network Is Printed on the Card?

That is the question to settle first, because the answer changes which clinicians are in contract. The current lookup offers HealthSmart Preferred, HealthSmart Physician/Ancillary Only, Health Payers Organization, HealthSmart Accel, HealthSmart Workers’ Compensation, HealthSmart Auto Medical and HealthSmart Dental. The network name is printed on the member card, with the HealthSmart logo or name visible alongside it.

The choice matters most at the top of the care ladder. HealthSmart Preferred is the full preferred provider network and includes hospitals. The Physician and Ancillary Only network deliberately has no hospital contracts, because it is built to pair with reference-based pricing, so a hospital-based admission for medical detox or inpatient rehab falls under the plan’s own pricing rules instead of a negotiated network rate. Does HealthSmart Interplan Cover Rehab?

No, not by itself, because a network has nothing to cover with. HealthSmart publishes no standard substance use benefit, and whether withdrawal management, residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient or ordinary outpatient treatment is paid for is decided by the employer plan behind the card. The networks do contract with treatment providers, listed under the heading Mental, Addictive and Behavioral Health.

That category is searchable for both individual clinicians and treatment sites, but it is not broken down further: no separate withdrawal management or residential treatment type exists in the directory, so a search returns a mixed list that has to be read one entry at a time. The document that answers the coverage question is the summary plan description of the employer plan, and the number that answers it quickly is the customer service line printed on the card.

Precertification and Who Certifies

The provider guide’s instruction is to read the member card, because details vary by client. The 2010 guide set out the older pattern: proposed care had to be certified by the payor’s utilization review service, through pre-admission certification, concurrent and retrospective review, discharge planning and case management, and that certification did not amount to a promise of payment. Which organization performs the review is a matter for the plan, not the network.

What the Record Does Not Show

No medical necessity criteria for substance use care are named anywhere in HealthSmart’s published material, no therapy visit limits are set at network level, and no formulary or policy on buprenorphine, naltrexone or methadone was found, so questions about medication treatment go to the plan’s pharmacy benefit manager. There is also no HealthSmart behavioral health line, crisis line or nurse line of any kind.

How Much Does Rehab Cost With HealthSmart Interplan?

No copay, coinsurance or deductible figures are published at HealthSmart level, because every self-funded plan sets its own. Nationally the middle half of residential prices runs $6,000 to $30,000 a month, detox $1,540 to $5,600 a week, partial hospitalization $7,000 to $15,000 a month and intensive outpatient $2,500 to $10,000 a month. Those are the pre-coverage rates.

What the network changes is the contracted rate the plan is billed, not the sums above. An employer plan then applies its own deductible and coinsurance to that rate, Medicaid and Medicare pay on their own fee schedules where they are the payer instead, and self-pay is where the published price is met directly. Why the Discount Is Not the Benefit

A contracted rate protects against balance billing when a contracted provider is used, which is how the Physician and Ancillary network is marketed to reference-based pricing plans. It does not make a service covered. Out-of-network treatment depends entirely on the plan: one employer plan built on these networks accepts out-of-network claims without a penalty, while another may pay nothing at all, and the wrap network exists precisely because those situations arise.

Is HealthSmart Interplan the Same as HealthSmart?

No. Interplan was a separate company whose network was folded into HealthSmart’s, and its trademark is now held by HealthSmart Preferred Network II, Inc. Emerald Health Network, an Ohio network established in 1983, took the same route. HealthSmart Preferred Care, established in 1993 and strongest in the southwest, is the network entity the current HealthSmart Preferred product descends from.

Ownership of the parent has moved twice in recent years. Centene Corporation completed its purchase of HealthSmart Holdings, Inc. in May 2019 and sold the company for $36 million in a deal that closed on January 5, 2023, with the buyer described as undisclosed and listed among divested businesses in Centene’s annual filing. Earlier names recorded for the business are The Parker Group and Ted L. Parker and Associates.

Is HealthSmart the Same as UMR?

No, not the same brand, though the two now look related. HealthSmart runs under its own name and website, but its privacy policy updated on October 10, 2024 directs privacy contacts to UnitedHealthcare in Hartford, Connecticut, and its site assets are labelled for UMR, UnitedHealth Group’s third party administrator. No press release naming the 2023 buyer was found, so the link is an inference.

How Do I Find a Rehab That Takes HealthSmart Interplan?

Use the HealthSmart provider lookup, choose the network named on the card rather than the Interplan name, and search under Mental, Addictive and Behavioral Health by location, name or type. The lookup is reference only, so confirm participation with the program and benefits with the plan administrator. The member portal help desk answers on 1-800-638-0968, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday.

Two local quirks are worth knowing before an admission date is set: two large health systems, one in Texas and one in California, require thirty days’ notice of a new group’s enrollment before members can use them through these networks. Ask whether the program is contracted for the exact network, who certifies the stay, and whether it holds a current state license. Government treatment registers and the state licensing lookup are the second check on standing.
