Rehabs and Sun Life Coverage

Sun Life in the United States is principally a group benefits company, providing disability, dental, life and stop-loss coverage to employers rather than major medical insurance. If Sun Life appears on your paperwork, your medical coverage is usually administered by someone else entirely. That distinction is worth settling before anything else.

That distinction matters enormously for addiction treatment. Sun Life may not be who pays your treatment claims, but disability coverage can replace income during a residential stay, and that is frequently the obstacle that stops people going at all. That distinction is worth settling before anything else.

What Sun Life Actually Provides

Sun Life’s United States business is built around group benefits sold through employers: disability insurance, dental, life cover, and stop-loss protection for employers who self-fund their medical plan. It is not a major medical insurer in the way the other companies in this directory are.

If Sun Life appears on your paperwork, your medical treatment claims are almost certainly handled by a different organization, and that is who decides whether a rehab admission is covered.

Work Out Who Pays What

Look at your insurance card rather than your benefits statement. The medical card will name the plan administrator, and that is who to call about treatment coverage, authorization and networks. Sun Life is likely to be relevant to a different question entirely: whether your income continues while you are not working.

Disability Cover During Treatment

This is the part worth reading carefully, because it addresses the obstacle that stops a great many people from entering residential treatment: not the cost of the treatment but the loss of income while away from work.

Short-term disability typically replaces a portion of income for a defined period after a waiting period of a week or two. Long-term disability picks up after that for longer absences. Whether a substance use disorder qualifies depends entirely on the policy, and policies vary considerably.

Ask three questions of the plan administrator. Is substance use disorder a covered condition, or excluded, or covered only where a co-occurring condition is also present. What certification does a clinician need to provide, and by when. And is there a limit on benefits for this condition that differs from the limit for other conditions.

What Frequently Trips People Up

Some group disability policies exclude disability caused by substance use, or limit it to a shorter benefit period than other conditions. Others cover it fully. The distinction is in the certificate of coverage rather than the summary, so request the actual document.

Timing also matters. A claim generally has to be filed within a set window and supported by clinical documentation from the point treatment begins. Someone who enters residential treatment and applies afterwards can find the claim harder to establish. Ask the facility’s admissions staff to help with the paperwork at the start rather than at discharge.

Job Protection Is a Separate Question

Disability pay and job protection are not the same thing. Federal medical leave protections can cover treatment for a serious health condition at employers of sufficient size, and that is what protects the role rather than the income.

Raise leave with HR separately, and be aware that the disability claim and the leave request are different processes with different paperwork. Many employers also run an employee assistance program offering confidential counseling, which does not report to a manager and is a legitimate first step.

Your Medical Coverage

Whoever administers your medical plan, addiction treatment will be covered, because federal parity law requires substance use benefits to carry no tighter limits than comparable medical care on essentially all employer plans.

Detox and residential treatment will need prior authorization, with the stay reviewed as it proceeds. Partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and ordinary counseling face less scrutiny. Medication for opioid use disorder is covered under the pharmacy benefit. Emergency care applies regardless, and withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can cause seizures, so an emergency department is the right destination rather than a wait for approval.

Typical US market rates before insurance
Level of careMonthlyDaily
Medical detox (7–14 days)$1,500 – $5,200 per week$215 – $745
Residential inpatient$6,200 – $26,000$205 – $865
PHP$7,200 – $14,000$240 – $465
IOP$2,700 – $9,200$90 – $305
Outpatient$1,300 – $5,200$45 – $175

Questions Worth Asking

Ask before you admit

Is this specific facility in network, and what does my plan pay if it is not?

What are my deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket maximum this year, and how much have I already met?

Does detox, residential, PHP or IOP require prior authorization?

How is continued stay reviewed, and what is the appeal route if care is denied?

Then a second set for the disability side: what does the policy say about substance use disorder, what documentation is needed, and by when must the claim be filed.

Stop-Loss and Self-Funded Employers

Sun Life also sells stop-loss cover to employers who pay their own medical claims. If your employer self-funds, your plan is governed by federal ERISA rules rather than state insurance law, state treatment mandates generally do not apply, and appeals follow a federal process.

Employees occasionally worry that a large claim will be visible to a small employer through stop-loss reporting. That reporting deals in amounts rather than diagnoses reaching managers, and addiction treatment records carry protection beyond ordinary medical confidentiality.

Aftercare

Continuing outpatient care and medication management are covered by your medical plan. Where a phased return to work is part of the plan, disability cover sometimes supports partial benefits during that period, which is worth asking about rather than assuming the choice is between working fully and not at all.
